A US official confirmed Washington’s commitment, with the contribution size depending on the assurance that the #Russia|n assets remain frozen. Initially, both the US and #EU planned to contribute $20 billion each, but the US (#USA) demanded a more durable sanctions regime, requiring renewal every 36 months instead of six.

The EU proposed contributing up to €35 billion ($39 billion) if the US doesn’t join. This faced resistance from #Germany, #France, and #Italy.

The European Commission aims to secure US participation by amending the sanctions regime to keep the plan a G-7 initiative.
