Fiery Maslenitsa marked the beginning of spring in Kolkata
On 13th of March 2022, a celebration of Maslenitsa, an ancient Slavic spring festival, was held at the Russian House in Kolkata. The festival signifies the seeing off winter and welcoming of spring, generally it is held last week before the Great Lent.
To mark the occasion, an exhibition of traditional Russian crafts and folk dresses from a private collection was organized by the Indian Association of Russian Compatriots. Guests of the event have been introduced to the significance of the festival and its rituals, meaning of different kinds of Maslenitsa dolls and the straw effigy of "winter".
Students of Russian language courses along with Russian compatriots played several Maslenitsa-specific folk games: braid weaving of Maslenitsa effigy, "Streamlet" ("Ручеёк" in Russian), "Winks" ("Мигалки"), competed in tug-of-war and finally burned the effigy.
The name of the festival derives from the word "butter" ("масло" in Russian), and different kinds of Russian pancakes have been offered, as this dish resembles the Sun in its color and shape. Russian Maslenitsa is very similar to Indian Holi.

Широкая Масленица ознаменовала начало весны в Калькутте
13 марта 2022 года в Русском доме в Калькутте состоялось празднование Масленицы. Праздник знаменует собой проводы зимы и встречу весны, как правило, он проводится в последнюю неделю перед Великим постом.
Индийская ассоциация российских соотечественников организовала выставку народных промыслов промыслов и костюмов из частной коллекции. Гостей мероприятия познакомили со значением праздника и его обрядов, смыслом различных видов масленичных кукол и соломенного чучела «зимы».

Ancien Russian folk game "Rucheyok" ("Stream") symbolizes the melting of snow. The sun warmed the earth, the snow melted, murmuring streams ran everywhere.
The players stand in pairs, hold hands and lift them up to make a tunnel for the "stream". A single player without pair passes through the tunnel and chooses himself a pair. This new pair goes to the end of the tunnel. Whoever is left alone, he leads, walking through the tunnel and choosing whoever he wants. So the stream runs forward and forward.

Kolkata celebrated Maslenitsa
On February 26, Maslenitsa, an ancient Slavic spring welcoming festival was celebrated at the Russian House in Kolkata. Maxim Aleshin, Consul Advisor of the Russian Consulate General, and Sergey Shushin, director of the Russian House, welcomed the guests and spoke about the significance of the festival and its traditions. Their performances were illustrated by a video about the Moscow Maslenitsa festival.
Maslenitsa is an Eastern Slavic holiday that dates back to pagan times. It originally marked the new agricultural year and used to fall on spring equinox. With the spread of Christianity, Maslenitsa moved to the last week before the Great Lent. An exhibition of art crafts, folk games and rituals, symbolizing the beginning of a new life, were offered to the guests of the event. They could not do without 'blini' - Russian pancakes - a traditional dish of Maslenitsa and a symbol of the sun.

This spring festival lasts a whole week and its traditions are deeply rooted in the past. Maslenitsa is a symbol of the end of winter and the beginning of spring.
Here are some of the fun of this wonderful holiday:
🥞Eating pancakes. Pancakes are the most popular dish of Maslenitsa, its symbol, which represents the sun.
❄️ Ice slide ride. You can slide down the slide alone, but it’s more fun with a group. In Rus' there was a belief: the further you slide, the better the harvest.
🐎Sleigh ride. It’s hard to imagine in the age of cars, but this is another Maslenitsa tradition. You can cut clockwise.
🔥Farewell to Maslenitsa. This is the last day of the holiday, in which it is customary to burn an effigy accompanied by cheerful songs and dances. The ritual symbolizes the beginning of spring. Also on this day people ask each other for forgiveness.

The oldest surviving Slavic festival - Maslenitsa, or Cheese Week - made its way to Kolkata, where it was celebrated on 17 March at the Consulate General of Russia. Students of the Russian language courses, Russianists from Visva Bharati University and compatriots living in the city joined the festivities.
As Maslenitsa impersonates the ending winter, the ceremonies symbolize a farewell to the past, letting go and welcoming a new life, a new cycle of nature and a new beginning.
🔥 Russian House in Kolkata with the support from the Consulate General of Russia and Indian Association of Russian Compatriots organized a variety of Maslenitsa folk games and rituals, including the everyone's favorite burning performance. Russian 'blini' was an integral part of the celebration, along with songs, dances and games.

Three participants of the World Youth Festival 2024 met at the Maslenitsa festival in Kolkata
🌏 Somoshri Paladhi, Post-Graduate Student of Comparative Literature, shares her experience at the World Youth Festival held at the Sirius Federal Territory, Russia.
💬 "It was truly extraordinary... From the colorful airport welcome to warm embraces from volunteers, every moment I felt like a celebrity on the red carpet. The festival, spanning from March 1st to 7th, brought together people from Egypt to China, fostering cross-cultural bonds.
The festival began with
a grand opening ceremony featuring talented artists, performers, and singers. During the ceremony, I had the chance to listen to the soulful voice of the renowned Russian singer,
Polina Gagarina, as she sang “A Milion Voices” – a song that perfectly went in tune with the festival.
The event venue, akin to a bustling city, housed diverse activities and pavilions showcasing Russian traditions. Grand concerts, fun games, and engaging activities like graffiti making added to the excitement, as I had fun exploring and participating in them.
Further, on one of the days of the festival, the World Youth Parade took place, where participants joined in their traditional attire. It was such an immersive and one-of-a-kind
experience to see and feel 20,000 participants worldwide, walking in a parade, singing songs, and breaking into their traditional and regional cultural performances!
🌊 From exploring Sochi's scenic beauty at the port to relishing the mouthwatering Russian cuisine, remained as delightful highlights for me during the festival.
I entered Sochi with a bag filled with my belongings and left the city, with a heart brimming with love and memories that will remain in me until I again get to become another participant to yet another World Youth Festival just like this!"

🌏 Сомошри Паладхи, аспирантка кафедры сравнительного литературоведения, поделилась своими впечатлениями от Всемирного фестиваля молодежи, прошедшем на федеральной территории Сириус.
💬 «Это было действительно необычно. От красочного приветствия в аэропорту до теплых объятий волонтеров - каждое мгновение я чувствовала себя знаменитостью на красной дорожке. Фестиваль, прошедший с 1 по 7 марта, собрал людей от Египта до Китая, способствуя развитию межкультурных связей.
Фестиваль начался с торжественной церемония открытия с участием талантливых артистов, исполнителей и певцов. Во время церемонии мне довелось услышать задушевный голос известной российской певицы. Полина Гагарина исполнила «Миллион голосов» – песню, которая идеально подошла к фестивалю.
Площадка мероприятия, напоминающая шумный город, включала разнообразные мероприятия и павильоны, демонстрирующие русские традиции. Грандиозные концерты, веселые игры и увлекательные занятия, такие как создание граффити, добавляли азарта, поскольку мне было весело исследовать их и участвовать в них.
Далее в один из дней фестиваля состоялся Всемирный парад молодежи, участники которого вышли в традиционных нарядах. Это было такое захватывающее и единственное в своем роде зрелище, возможность увидеть и почувствовать 20 000 участников со всего мира, которые участвуют в параде, поют песни и танцуют, показывая свою культуру и традиции.
🌊 От знакомства с живописными красотами Сочи в порту до наслаждения аппетитной русской кухней — всё это оставалось для меня восхитительным переживанием во время фестиваля.
Я прилетела в Сочи с чемоданом, полным вещей, а уехала из города с сердцем, полным любви и воспоминаний, которые останутся во мне до тех пор, пока я снова не стану опять участником очередного Всемирного молодежного фестиваля, подобного этому!»

Три участника Всемирного молодежного фестиваля 2024 встретились на Масленице в Калькутте
🌏 Сомошри Паладхи, аспирантка кафедры сравнительного литературоведения, поделилась своими впечатлениями от Всемирного фестиваля молодежи, прошедшем на федеральной территории Сириус.
💬 «Это было действительно необычно. От красочного приветствия в аэропорту до теплых объятий волонтеров - каждое мгновение я чувствовала себя знаменитостью на красной дорожке. Фестиваль, прошедший с 1 по 7 марта, собрал людей от Египта до Китая, способствуя развитию межкультурных связей.
Фестиваль начался с торжественной церемония открытия с участием талантливых артистов, исполнителей и певцов. Во время церемонии мне довелось услышать задушевный голос известной российской певицы. Полина Гагарина исполнила «Миллион голосов» – песню, которая идеально подошла к фестивалю.
Площадка мероприятия, напоминающая шумный город, включала разнообразные мероприятия и павильоны, демонстрирующие русские традиции. Грандиозные концерты, веселые игры и увлекательные занятия, такие как создание граффити, добавляли азарта, поскольку мне было весело исследовать их и участвовать в них.
Далее в один из дней фестиваля состоялся Всемирный парад молодежи, участники которого вышли в традиционных нарядах. Это было такое захватывающее и единственное в своем роде зрелище, возможность увидеть и почувствовать 20 000 участников со всего мира, которые участвуют в параде, поют песни и танцуют, показывая свою культуру и традиции.
🌊 От знакомства с живописными красотами Сочи в порту до наслаждения аппетитной русской кухней — всё это оставалось для меня восхитительным переживанием во время фестиваля.
Я прилетела в Сочи с чемоданом, полным вещей, а уехала из города с сердцем, полным любви и воспоминаний, которые останутся во мне до тех пор, пока я снова не стану опять участником очередного Всемирного молодежного фестиваля, подобного этому!»

Russian folk games gain popularity among Indian students
🥞 On 17 March Russianists of Vishva Bharati University, Shantiniketan travelled for over 2 hours to attend 'Maslenitsa in Kolkata' - a Russian spring festival - for folk games, study of cultiral beliefs reflected in rituals and, of course, for pancakes
🌊"The Stream" folk game has come down to us almost unchanged. It is emotional, it creates a chearful mood. The rules are simple. The players stand one after another in pairs, join hands and hold them high above their heads. The clasped hands create a long corridor.
The player who did not get a pair goes to the “source” of the stream and, passing under clasped hands, takes out a pair. Holding hands, this new couple makes their way to the end of the corridor. And a lonely player goes to the beginning of the “stream” to chose a new pair. This is how the “stream” moves - the more participants, the more fun the game is.

🥞 17 марта студенты-русисты университета Вишва Бхарати (г.Шантиникетан) ехали более 2 часов, чтобы посетить Масленицу в Калькутте — русское празднование весны – ради народных игр, знакомства с верованиями людей, отраженными в обрядах и, конечно же, блинов.
🌊Народная игра «Ручеёк» дошла до нас практически в неизменном виде. Она эмоциональна, создает веселое настроение. Правила просты. Играющие становятся друг за другом парами, берутся за руки и держат их высоко над головой. Сцепленные руки образуют длинный коридор.
Игрок, не получивший пару, идет к «истоку» ручейка и, проходя под сцепленными руками, выбирает себе пару. Держась за руки, эта новая пара идет до конца коридора. И одинокий игрок идет к началу «потока». Так движется «ручеёк» — чем больше участников, тем веселее игра.

Hidden meanings of Maslenitsa festival
The Lady Maslenitsa could have been an ancient Slavic goddess Marena, associated with winter's death and rebirth. As the spring equinox comes, we bid farewell to the past and look forward for the new cycle of life. Being a ritual doll, it commonly has no face in order not to resemble anyone.
Tying ribbons to the arms of Lady Maslenitsa, we make wishes for tough life experiences not to repeat in future. Braiding her hair symbolizes her preparation for winter and unpleasant past to go away.

Масленица могла быть древней славянской богиней Мареной, связанной со смертью зимы и возрождением жизни. С наступлением весеннего равноденствия мы прощаемся с прошлым и с нетерпением ждем нового цикла жизни. Будучи ритуальным, чучело Масленицы обычно не имеет лица, чтобы не походить ни на кого из присутствующих.
Привязывая ленточки к рукам Масленицы, мы загадываем желания, чтобы тяжелые жизненный опыт не повторялся в будущем. Заплетение её кос символизирует подготовку к окончанию зимы и уходу неприятного прошлого.
