🤝 On September 10, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Secretary-General of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (#IORA) Salman Al Farisi in Moscow.
During their conversation they considered key issues on the IORA agenda as well as promising areas of interaction in terms of further involvement of Russia, which was granted the Dialogue Partner status in 2021, in the association’s practical activity. The Association Secretariat expressed an interest in Russian approaches to the sectoral areas prioritised for this platform: maritime cooperation, tourism, blue economy, fishing and environmental protection.
The minister made an emphasis on the importance of IORA’s applied potential in the context of deepening multilateral cooperation in a broad transcontinental space, involving such systemically important associations as the #SCO, #EAEU and #ASEAN.

Салман аль-Фариси из Индонезии, но мы встречаемся в Порт-Луи, столице Маврикия, в штаб -квартире международной организации АРСИО (Ассоциация регионального сотрудничества прибрежных стран Индийского океана). Как генеральный секретарь АРСИО, он говорит о будущем - пока небольшой, но очень важной для региона организации. Одной из немногих сейчас, придерживающейся своего кредо - никакой политики, только сотрудничество во благо региона. Мы в АРСИО - партнёр по диалогу с 2021. И для диалога сейчас предлагаем - создать на базе АРСИО международную лабораторию по исследованию микропластика. Именно потому, что микропластик обсуждают сейчас все, боятся его влияния все, пугают тоже все - но никто так и не сформулировал четко - что это, какие размеры и какой состав критически опасны для человека и планеты, что биоразлагается, а что навсегда остается в организме. И это - и про морских существ, и про людей. Если получится создать такую лабораторию - это будет первый общий шаг, России и стран Индийского океана, в реальной борьбе с загрязнением планеты. И для Маврикия это важно невероятно - ведь остров маленький, здесь боятся подъема уровня мирового океана, загрязнений - которых течением приносит от больших индустриальных соседей. Поэтому господин аль-Фариси нашу идею подхватил - и обещал в ближайшее время придумать, как будем над ней работать. А пока - примеряем подаренное национальное индонезийское пончо, шелковое - как носят у него на родине.
Salman Al Farisi is from Indonesia but we met in Port Louis, capital of Mauritius, in the headquarters of IORA (Indian Ocean Rim Association). As the General-Secretary of IORA, he is speaking about the future of a small but very important organization for the region. It is one of a few organizations that does not involve into politics - just cooperation for the good of the region. Russia has been a partner dialogue in IORA since 2021. And for the dialogue we offer to create an international laboratory to investigate microplastics on the IORA basis. Everyone is talking about it, especially, microplastics’ influence is what everyone scared about. Nobody has yet defined what it is, what scale and what composition are critically dangerous for humans and planet, what could biodegrade and what always stays in the body. Both the sea creatures and the humans. If we could create such a laboratory, it would be a first mutual step of Russia and the countries of the Indian Ocean in a real struggle against the pollution of the planet. And for Mauritius it is incredibly important - the island is very small, and is afraid of the rise of the world ocean level, and the pollution from neighbour industrial countries. So, Al Farisi has supported our idea and promised how we will work together in the forthcoming future. And for now we are trying on the national silk Indonesian poncho, the one that wear in his home country.

Это додо. Первое фото - самое верное. Потому что на картине - только тень, исчезающий силуэт исчезнувшей птицы. На остальных - то, что по памяти рисуют. Говорят - она была любопытной и безобидной. Говорят, она любила сладости. Ее истребили - века назад, как и маврикийских черепах. Как и еще много эндемических животных и растений. Приехавшие на остров люди. Теперь - вместо маврикийских черепах здесь живут сейшельские. Тоже самое - с черным и красным деревом, с десятками видов летавших и ползавших здесь. Человек умеет разрушать все вокруг себя. И ему кажется, что можно поправить. Только это не совсем так. Доказано птицей додо. Ставшей символом этой страны. Оставшейся на ее гербе - как напоминание, насколько не только на этом острове все хрупко.

They say the bird was curious and harmless. It loved the sweets. Dodos were exterminated centuries ago as the Mauritian turtles and other endemic species. People who came to the island killed them. Now, instead of the Mauritian turtles, the Seychelles ones live here. The same happed to the black and the red tree, and to dozens of animals and plants. Humans can destroy everything around them. And they think they could fix it all. But it is not actually true as well proven by the dodo. The bird became a symbol of the country. It is present on the Mauritian national emblem as a reminder how fragile is everything and not just on this island.
