🇧🇷 On September 7, the Federative Republic of Brazil is celebrating Independence Day. On this day in 1822, Pedro, the son of King of Portugal Dom John VI (Joao VI), uttered the famous phrase “Liberty or death” heralding the end of the 322-year period of Portuguese influence.

A pro-independence movement began to evolve long before this memorable date. In the late XVIII century, a revolutionary named Tiradentes, the national hero of Brazil, organised a plot in Minas Gerais, aiming to establish an independent republic. Although the plans of the secret society were exposed, Tiradentes came to symbolise resistance for the sake of Brazil’s freedom.

👉 In the early XIX century, Napoleon Bonaparte’s expansion in Europe, the acquisition of independence by Spanish colonies and the Liberal Revolution in Portugal facilitated a national liberation struggle in Brazil that ended with the establishment of the Brazilian Empire, free from Portuguese influence.

Contemporary Brazil is an influential member of the international community and plays an important role in the global economy. It is actively involved in addressing multiple topical issues of the regional and global agenda.

🤝 Russia and Brazil established diplomatic relations on October 3, 1828. However, bilateral ties started to evolve as far back as 1811 when Emperor Alexander I appointed the first Russian Consul General to the city of Rio de Janeiro.

🇷🇺🇧🇷 Today, Russia-Brazil relations are developing positively in a trust-based and friendly atmosphere, marked by mutual understanding. They hinge on the principles of equitable and mutually respectful dialogue.

🇧🇷🇷🇺🇮🇳🇨🇳🇿🇦 Intensive cooperation within the BRICS association ranks among the most active aspects of Russia-Brazil collaboration.

🎉 We wholeheartedly congratulate our colleagues and friends from Brazil on their national holiday. We wish them peace, further development and prosperity.

🇷🇺🇧🇷 Today marks the 1️⃣9️⃣5️⃣th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Brazil.

On October 3, 1828, the order appointing Franz Borel the first Russian envoy to this country was signed. However, bilateral ties between Russia and Brazil started developing since 1811 with the appointment of the first Russian Consul-General to Rio de Janeiro.

Today, Russia-Brazil relations constitute a strategic partnership, have gathered positive momentum and are developing in the spirit of trust, friendship and mutual understanding based on the principles of equality and mutually beneficial dialogue.

Russia and Brazil have traditionally followed coinciding approaches to many global matters, such as countering terrorism, environment protection, ensuring international information security, etc.

💬 FM Sergey Lavrov: We are united by our common striving to facilitate the formation of a fairer, genuinely democratic world arrangement based on the international legal principle of the sovereign equality of states (joint news conference with Foreign Minister of Brazil Mauro Vieira, April 17, 2023).

🇧🇷🇷🇺🇮🇳🇨🇳🇿🇦 Close cooperation within the BRICS association ranks among the most active aspects of Russia-Brazil collaboration.

Our two countries maintain intensive political contacts, including at the highest level, with regular meetings and telephone conversations between their respective Heads of State and Foreign Ministers.

📈 Brazil is Russia’s leading trade partner in Latin America. In 2022, bilateral trade amounted to $8.4 billion, up 13% year-on-year.

Our countries have built a positive track record of cooperation in science, technology, education, culture and humanitarian affairs.

🤝 We wholeheartedly congratulate our Brazilian colleagues and friends on our common anniversary. Russia appreciates the continuity in our relations with Brazil and is looking forward to further developing the entire range of our bilateral ties.

The Parties exchanged opinions on developments related to Ukraine. President Lula da Silva confirmed Brazil’s commitment to conflict resolution based on the legitimate concerns of all Parties in the security sphere and emphasised the futility of unilateral initiatives and ultimatums.

☝️ Sergey Lavrov and President Lula da Silva expressed their shared concerns regarding the deep crisis in the Palestinian territories, which has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of civilians. They agreed that the UN Security Council should demand an immediate ceasefire, address grave humanitarian issues, and remove obstacles to the implementation of UN resolutions on the creation of a Palestinian state.

🇧🇷 On September 7, the Federative Republic of Brazil celebrates Independence Day.

🗓 #OnThisDay in 1822, Prince Pedro, the son of Portuguese King John VI, pronounced the famous phrase, "Independence or Death", which marked the end of the 322-year-long Portuguese rule.

A movement for Brazil’s independence originated long before that landmark day. In the late XVIII century, Brazilian revolutionary and national hero Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, known as Tiradentes, became the leader of a clandestine group in Minas Gerais whose goal was to create an independent republic. Although their plot was exposed, Tiradentes has become the symbol of the Brazilians’ struggle for independence.

The Brazilian national liberation movement gained momentum amid Napoleon’s expansion in Europe in the early XIX century, the proclamation of independence by Spanish colonies, and the 1820 bourgeois revolution in Portugal. It ultimately led to the establishment of the Empire of Brazil and the declaration of its independence from Portugal.

A respected member of the international community, modern Brazil is rightfully regarded as a leading political and economic force on the international stage with a major role in dealing with many current issues on the regional and global agenda.

🤝 Diplomatic relations between Russia and Brazil were established on October 3, 1828, but their development began back in 1811, when Emperor Alexander I appointed the first Russian consul general to Rio de Janeiro.

🇷🇺🇧🇷 Today, Russian-Brazilian relations are developing sustainably in the atmosphere of trust, friendship and mutual understanding based on the similarity of views on many global issues. Our two countries are closely cooperating within the UN, #BRICS and #G20.

💬 Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov: The further strengthening of friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Russia and Brazil meets the interests of our peoples, facilitates the maintenance of international security and makes a tangible contribution to resolving global development problems.
(from the remarks at the opening ceremony of an exhibition on the 195th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Brazil, Moscow, November 27, 2023).

🎊 We extend our heartfelt greetings to our Brazilian colleagues and friends on their national holiday and wish them well-being and prosperity!
