Members updated on progress in dispute settlement reform talks in run-up to MC13

WTO members were briefed on the latest developments in ongoing informal discussions on dispute settlement reform and work plans for talks in the coming weeks at a meeting of the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) on 26 January. Members were mandated at the WTO’s 12th Ministerial Conference to conduct discussions, with the view to having a fully functioning dispute settlement system accessible to all members by 2024.

Türkiye appeals WTO dispute panel report regarding Turkish duties on certain US goods

Türkiye notified its decision to appeal the panel report in the case brought by the United States in “Turkey — Additional Duties on Certain Products from the United States” (DS561). The panel report was circulated to WTO members on 19 December 2023. The appeal was circulated to members on 31 January.

WTO issues call for papers for 2024 Essay Award for Young Economists

The WTO has issued a call for young economists to submit papers for the 2024 WTO Essay Award. The aim of the award is to promote high-quality research on trade policy and international trade cooperation and to reinforce the relationship between the WTO and the academic community. Essays must be submitted by 3 June 2024.

E-commerce negotiators engage in first review of Chair’s text

At the first round of e-commerce negotiations in 2024, held from 29 January to 2 February, the co-convenors of the talks — Australia, Japan and Singapore — welcomed participating members’ willingness to work in the coming months on the basis of the text circulated by the co-convenors in mid-January. The text reflects the co-convenors’ judgement on where consensus is most likely to be achieved for a future e-commerce agreement.

США с 1 марта запретят импорт из России непромышленных алмазов весом от 1 карата, а с 1 сентября — от 0,5 карата, сообщает Минфин страны.

В документе, который подписала замдиректора Управления по контролю за иностранными активами Лиза Паллукони, говорится, что запрет распространяется на алмазы, которые «были добыты, извлечены,
произведены или изготовлено полностью или частично на территории Российской Федерации».

Также с марта США запретят ввоз ювелирных изделий с бриллиантами и несортированных алмазов российского происхождения или экспортируемых из России.

Indonesia has requested WTO dispute consultations with the European Union regarding the EU’s imposition of definitive anti-dumping duties on imports of fatty acids from Indonesia. The request was circulated to WTO members on 12 February.

Можно заметить, что произошел резкий скачок показателей в 2023 году. Например, экспорт ЕС в Казахстан вырос в два раза. Аналогичный рост — у Азербайджана. Рост у Кыргызстана — чуть ли не в 10 раз. Экспорт из ЕС вырос на 💵 1,3 миллиарда в месяц по сравнению с периодом до февраля 2022.

WTO panel issues report regarding EU measures affecting palm oil, palm crop-based biofuels

On 5 March 2024, the WTO circulated the panel report in the case brought by Malaysia in “European Union and Certain Member States — Certain measures concerning palm oil and oil palm crop-based biofuels” (DS600).
