Grandmaster Sergey Karjakin has been suspended after making a series of pro-Russian statements.

Russian grandmaster Sergey Karjakin has been hit with a six-month ban by the chess authorities after the 32-year-old issued support for Russia's military operation in Ukraine.

โ€œI just don't remember such a precedent when a chess player was not allowed on principle. Itโ€™s a shame."

๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บโ€œI understood that there was such a danger [of disqualification], but I believe that I am first and foremost a citizen and patriot of my country, and I say this without any boasting. If such a situation arose again, I would not be silent, but again I would write such a letter. I do not regret what I did. Choosing between supporting my country and participating in the Candidates Tournament, I would always choose the first one," he added.

The International Chess Body, FIDE, for the very first time has instituted the Chess Olympiad Torch that is part of Olympic tradition, but was never done in the Chess Olympiad.
FIDE President and Russia's statesman & economist Arkady Dvorkovich took part in the launching of torch relay for the 44th Chess Olympiad on June 19 in New Delhi. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich handed over the torch to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who in turn handed it over to Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand. This torch will then be taken to 75 cities in a span of 40 days before the final culmination at Mahabalipuram on July 27.
"I'm really excited to be part of this historic moment. I was always fascinated by the Olympic Torch Relay concept and now we also have one in chess. But the most amazing thing about it is, that it will always start in India. And as an Indian, I feel really proud about this fact," said the five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand while addressing the media during a press conference.
