Mikhail Egorov was born on May 5, 1923 in Ermoshenki, near Smolensk.

▪️A scout of the 756th Rifle Regiment of the 150th Rifle Division, Sergeant Egorov distinguished himself in the battles of crossing the Vistula and Oder Rivers. On April 30, 1945, he and Junior Sergeant Meliton Kantaria hoisted the Victory Banner over the Reichstag.

On May 8, 1949, a monument to Soviet soldiers who died in the storming of the capital of the Third Reich was officially unveiled in Treptow Park in Berlin.

◽️ Sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich immortalised the nobility of the Red Army soldiers.

#ThisDay 78 years ago, the Belorussian strategic offensive operation Bagration was launched during the Great Patriotic War.

⚔️ Being unique in terms of spatial scale, this operation is rightly considered to be the greatest achievement of the national art of war. It has resulted in the defeat of the most powerful Wehrmacht group.

◽️ Forces of the 1st Baltic, 3rd, 2nd and 1st Belorussian fronts supported by Dnepr Flotilla liberated Belorussia, some parts of Lithuania and Latvia, reached Poland and East Prussian border. The German Nazi command redeployed a considerable part of its forces from the Western Front to Belorussia for confronting Soviet troops. It facilitated the offensive of the allied force in France.

#ThisDay 77 years ago, the historical parade to honour the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany was held in the Red Square, Moscow.

◽️ The parade lasted two hours. It was attended by 24 marshals, 249 generals, 2,536 officers, 31,116 sergeants and soldiers.

August 23, 1943 - Day of Defeat of Nazi Germany in Battle of Kursk

It was one of the decisive battles of the Second World War.

▫️Hitler's command planned in 1943 to conduct a major summer offensive, seize the strategic initiative and turn the tide of war in their favor. To the beginning of Kursk battle Headquarters of the Supreme High Command created the grouping (the Central and Voronezh fronts) which had 1,336 thousand people, more than 19,000 mounts and mortars, 3,444 tanks and self-propelled artillery mounts, 2,172 airplanes. Grouping of the enemy "Center" and "South" had over 900 thousand persons, about 10,000 mounts and mortars, up to 2,700 tanks and assault guns, about 2,050 airplanes.

▫️By stubborn and firm defence of the Soviet armies the enemy was exhausted and exsanguinated. As a result of counterattack the groups of the enemy in Oryol and Belgorod-Kharkov direction were defeated.

▫️ On August 23, Kharkov was liberated. In the battle of Kursk the Wehrmacht lost about 500,000 persons, 1,500 tanks, over 1,700 thousand airplanes, 3,000 guns.

◽️ Victory in the battle of Kursk was one of the important stages of achievement of the general victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany.

◽️ Germany and its allies were forced to turn to defence in all theatres of World War II.

#ThisDay 79 years in the Great Patriotic War, the Battle for Dnieper began

💥 The battle was the biggest in world military history. The front line stretched for 750 kilometres, about 4 million soldiers from both sides participated in it.

During the battle, which lasted till December 23, Soviet troops dealt heavy defeat to the main forces of the Army Group "South" and a part of forces of the Army Group "Center" of the enemy. About 40,000 settlements and 160 cities were liberated.

Capture of the bridgeheads on Dnieper created conditions for the offensive in Belarus, complete liberation of the right-bank of Ukraine and the development of the successful offensive in the western and south-western directions.

In the Battle for Dnieper the Soviet troops showed heroism. Tens of thousands of soldiers were awarded with orders and medals. 47 generals, 1,123 officers and 1,268 sergeants and soldiers were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
