История начинается, когда в тихую деревенскую жизнь Астерикса, Обеликса и их соседей врывается Простопникс, которому срочно нужна помощь. Он сообщает, что его отец Океаноникс оказался в тюрьме за кражу, которой не совершал. Орел Лютеции — драгоценный золотой символ римских легионов — украден, и ни в чем не повинного человека бросили в тюрьму!
Астерикс обещает во всем разобраться и приказывает Простопниксу тихо сидеть в родной деревне. Закадычные друзья-галлы отправляются в Лютецию, чтобы выяснить, в чем дело, и расспросить того, кто куда больше знает и лучше разбирается в интригах большого города. И, разумеется, на своем пути в поисках ответов друзьям-галлам не раз придется щедро раздавать тумаки.
