🗽SPACED REPETITION: Effective Technique to Learn New Vocabulary🗽

What is spaced repetition?

📝Spaced repetition is a way to repeat information so that you remember it effectively. Spaced repetition has two parts: repetition and spacing.

📀Repetition

Repetition is a memorisation strategy as old as the hills. As the ancient Romans have said, Repetitio mater studiorum est, or, “Repetition is the mother of all learning”.

⏮️The idea is that the more you repeat something, the better you learn it.

Spacing

⏱️The spacing effect refers to the observation that the learning that occurs from repetition is more effective when it is spaced out over time. Rather than repeatedly studying a word 100 times in the same day, a person would learn better if they repeated it 10 times a day for 10 days.

🗽SPACED REPETITION: Effective Technique to Learn New Vocabulary🗽
Part 2

🤓Hermann Ebbinghaus did some research on memory and forgetting. He observed that the more time that passes, the more we forget. In a series of self-experiments, Ebbinghaus plotted what has come to be known as the “forgetting curve”⤵️

👩‍💻He found that the most effective learning happens when the interval between repetitions is increased over time.

⏱️So when a word is new, you would have to repeat it quite frequently to remember it. But the more you’ve seen it, the less frequently you need to repeat it.

👉In other words, you can reduce the amount of “forgetting” by spacing repetitions out.

👨‍🎓More recent studies have found that spacing repetition changes how the brain is wired. When repetition is spaced out more than an hour, brain connections are enhanced and the information is more likely to be stored in long-term memory.

💃🧱 Origins of Paint the town red 🩸🍷

🖍️ The allusion being made in the expression 'paint the town red' is to the kind of unruly behaviour that results in much blood being spilt.

🧱 There are several suggestions as to the origin of the phrase. The one most often repeated, especially within the walls of the Melton Mowbray Tourist Office, is a tale dating from 1837.

🔴 That is when the Marquis of Waterford and a group of friends are said to have run riot in the Leicestershire town of Melton Mowbray, painting the town's toll-bar and several buildings red.

👋 Hey everyone!

🎙️Today we will speak about 😱 adynata. But, please, relax, no Greek drama here. 😄 Although you might have never come across this word but I am 💯 sure you know these types of expressions or even use them a lot.

So adynata is a figure of speech that works like a hyperbole with a specific meaning - it implies a complete impossibility.

Here are some examples of adynata.

When pigs fly = never
When hell freezes over = never
When two Fridays come together = never

Interestingly, adynata can be found in most of the languages around the globe 🌍

For example, in French: Quand les poules auront des dents ("When hens grow teeth").

Do you know any other examples of adynata in English or in your language? Please, share them in the comments ⬇️⬇️⬇️
