💃🧱 Origins of Paint the town red 🩸🍷

🖍️ The allusion being made in the expression 'paint the town red' is to the kind of unruly behaviour that results in much blood being spilt.

🧱 There are several suggestions as to the origin of the phrase. The one most often repeated, especially within the walls of the Melton Mowbray Tourist Office, is a tale dating from 1837.

🔴 That is when the Marquis of Waterford and a group of friends are said to have run riot in the Leicestershire town of Melton Mowbray, painting the town's toll-bar and several buildings red.

👋 Hey everyone!

🎙️Today we will speak about 😱 adynata. But, please, relax, no Greek drama here. 😄 Although you might have never come across this word but I am 💯 sure you know these types of expressions or even use them a lot.

So adynata is a figure of speech that works like a hyperbole with a specific meaning - it implies a complete impossibility.

Here are some examples of adynata.

When pigs fly = never
When hell freezes over = never
When two Fridays come together = never

Interestingly, adynata can be found in most of the languages around the globe 🌍

For example, in French: Quand les poules auront des dents ("When hens grow teeth").

Do you know any other examples of adynata in English or in your language? Please, share them in the comments ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Hey everyone! 👋

I bet there's one fact about famous British writer ✍️ Charles Dickens you didn't know!

It has been a huge revelation to me that his surname 'Dickens' can be translated as 'Devil' and is actually not a pseudonym but his real family name 👺

"Dickens" is a euphemism for "devil" and is used in the phrase 'scare the dickens out of sb' which means shock or frighten sb very suddenly or severely.🙀

Did you know that?

🫦Keep a stiff upper lip

🔎(not show their feelings when they are upset-сохранять невозмутимость, держаться молодцом)

📝A person who is said to have a stiff upper lip displays fortitude and stoicism in the face of adversity, or exercises great self-restraint in the expression of emotion.

🎩The phrase is most commonly heard as part of the idiom "keep a stiff upper lip", and has traditionally been used to describe an attribute of British people in remaining resolute and unemotional when faced with adversity. A sign of fear is trembling of the upper lip, hence the saying keep a "stiff" upper lip.

☕️ What is the suspended coffee or “caffè sospeso”?

We may consider this custom as a simple and anonymous act of generosity. The best well-known urban legend related to Neapolitan coffee is probably the one concerning suspended coffee or, as they say in Italian language, caffè sospeso. You basically order one coffee but pay for two. The bartender will later give the already paid coffee to the next person who comes in. Nevertheless, this is not to be seen as an act of charity, but rather as the intention of sharing a pleasure.

According to many, this habit started during the Second World War. During those very hard times people could express their solidarity by paying two cups of coffee, including one for those who could not afford it.

That is why caffè sospeso has always been identified as a symbol of popular and social solidarity.

Although this is not a tradition that all bars should comply with, nowadays this custom is making a comeback.
