Hi everyone! Today we are officially announcing our Open Data Armenia project. It is entirely dedicated to the topic of open data in Armenia as well as related to the Armenian language, culture, and history around the world.

As a first step, we created the open data catalog https://data.opendata.am/dataset/, where 73 datasets have already been gathered. This catalog will be enriched with new datasets on language, history, life quality, statistics, the government structure, and much more.

This kind of machine-readable open data is a major boon to programmers, analysts, journalists, researchers, students, and teachers.

For example, you can find such datasets in the catalog as:
-National Law Database https://data.opendata.am/dataset/arlis-db (23GB)
-Wikipedia dumps in Armenian https://data.opendata.am/dataset/hywiki-xml-dumps
-Armenian trade statistics with ASEAN countries https://data.opendata.am/dataset/asean-am-hs2

This catalog is just the beginning, we will continue publishing new datasets, translating texts on how to work with the data, help those who use it, as well as creating new projects based on it.

Первым шагом мы создали каталог открытых данных https://data.opendata.am/dataset/ где уже сейчас собрано 73 набора данных, и этот каталог будет пополняться, будут новые наборы данных о языке, истории, качестве жизни, статистике, устройстве государства и многое другое.

Where to find sociological data about Armenia? Let's take a look:

- IPUMS International database of the sociological survey. It's not a data catalog but a unified database. It includes data on Armenia surveys in 2001 and 2011
- World Bank Microdata catalog database of all microdata surveys in the World. It includes 81 survey datasets from Armenia.
- Food and Agriculture Microdata Catalogue 25 survey datasets from UN FAO agency.

And Armenian statistical agency provides Armstat Microdata Library with 26 datasets available after registration.

Microdata datasets is not always provided as open data, but sometimes they could be downloaded as public files or requested from a data provider.

Armenian official national geoportal maparmenia.am was announced about a year ago but is not available right now, and even when it was available, it needed to be more open, more open data, anyway.

So how to find Armenian geodata, map layers, and other spatial datasets? Here is a list of available open data catalogs:
- VGSE Armenia https://vgse.geology.am Geonode-based geoportal provided by the Institute of Geological Sciences of Armenia. It includes 12 map layers related to geology.
- The Armenian Soil Information System (ArmSIS) https://armsis.cas.am was created by the Armenian National Agrarian University and other research institutions of Armenia by request of the Ministry of Economy. It's Geonode based and provides open API to access 30 data layers.
- Open data portal of Armenia, a part of the Interactive Forest Atlas of Armenia https://data-download-gfw.hub.arcgis.com/ , it's an ArcGIS Hub based open data portal provided by NGO REC Caucasus with government and international geo data about the country with a focus on forestry.
- Geoserver of the Center for Ecological-Noosphere Studies National Academy of Sciences, RA http://og.cens.am:8081/geoserver . This geoportal includes map layers and open geo API: CSW, WFS, WMS, and e.t.c. It uses OS Geo Geoserver open-source software.

Many more spatial data about Armenia are available worldwide, and more to tell about each data catalog mentioned in this post. We will regularly write about them here and add the most exciting datasets to the data.opendata.am data catalog.

[RU] Многие открытые данные и материалы культурного наследия Армении и армян разбросаны по архивам по всему миру, картины художников, работы скульпторов, книги писателей доступны на сайтах музеев, галерей и архивов. Чаще всего их невозможно найти просто указанием страны, не все архивы позволяют искать идентифицируя по культурному происхождению или по стране.

В некоторых странах, например, в Российской Федерации значительная часть культурных данных доступны в виде больших наборов данных, доступных для выгрузки, анализа и исследований. Где найти эти культурные данные?

Госкаталог музейного фонда (https://goskatalog.ru)

Создан Минкультуры РФ, включает описание и превью более чем 37 миллионов экспонатов. В каталоге много материалов относящихся к Армении, например, картины Ованесса Айваязана (Ивана Айвазовского) [1] или картины и иные материалы связанные с работой Мартироса Сарьяна [2]. Данные из Госкаталога доступны в на портале открытых данных Минкультуры РФ, их можно скачать и найти в них эти и другие материалы связанные с культурой и историей Армении и армянского народа.

Артефакт – гид по музеям России (https://ar.culture.ru)

Другой проект Минкультуры России охватывает множество музеев РФ и предоставляет изображения экспонатов в высоком качестве. В этом проекте, также, немало картин имеющих отношение к Армении и армянским художникам. Там есть страница и галерея посвящённая Ивану Айвазовскому (Ованесу Айвазяну) [4], или Налбандяна Дмитрия Аркадьевича [5] и многих других художников. В системе Артефакт не публикуются открытые данные, но есть недокументированное API и возможность собрать данных через скрейпинг данных.

Национальная электронная библиотека (https://rusneb.ru)

В Национальной электронной библиотеке собраны миллионы книг открытого доступа из библиотек и архивов России. Многие книги в НЭБ написаны армянскими писателями на русском языке или переведены на русский язык. Например, в НЭБ есть книги Мартироса Сарьяна [6] и Ованеса Туманяна [7], а также небольшое число книг на армянском языке [8]. У НЭБ нет открытого API или открытых данных, но эти и другие материалы можно найти поиском и собрать скрейпингом с веб-страниц НЭБ. Также в НЭБ немало документов Российской Империи включающих историю и статистику губерний населённых армянами.

Этот список источников далеко не исчерпывающий, многие художественные произведения публикуются на сайтах других музеев, галерей, библиотек и архивов. Мы собираем список таких источников данных со всего мира и если Вы знаете такие сайты, обязательно напишите нам, мы опубликуем итоговый список в в каталоге данных Open Data Armenia и организуем сбор этих данных.

In the non-Armenian data section of Armenia, biodiversity data in the country is published as part of the GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) global project, which brings together educational materials, news, tools and data related to wildlife.

As part of the project, researchers from many countries create individual copies of the IPT product: The Integrated Publishing Toolkit, with which they publish their data sets.

Such data are also published by Armenian scientists on the Armenia IPT portal, where 4 biodiversity data sets are posted.

Also, the nature of Armenia is studied by scientists from other countries and their work and data are also published on GBIF and can be found in the general data catalog

That's 32 datasets to date.

All data are presented in machine-readable DwC-A and EML formats, and are also published under open licenses CC-BY and CC0
