🕯 Today marks six years since an outstanding diplomat, Russian Ambassador to Turkey (2013-2016) Andrey #Karlov is no longer with us. On December 19, 2016, he fell victim to a terrorist attack aimed at undermining Russian-Turkish relations and the peace process in Syria.

Andrey Karlov devoted his entire life to the diplomatic service. For many years he was stationed in DPRK, contributed to resolving nuclear tension on the Korean peninsula. As the Head of the Russian diplomatic mission in Ankara, he promoted improving bilateral relations with Turkey.

Ambassador Karlov was attacked during the opening ceremony of a photo exhibition in Ankara. The verdict in the murder case was handed down in March 2021: some of the accused were sentenced to prison terms, while another five people faced life imprisonment.

💬 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov: Ambassador Andrey Karlov was a comrade, a close friend and one of our top diplomats... Andrey died in the line of duty. We will forever keep our memories of him alive.

🗓 On October 29, 1929, Yevgeny Primakov, an outstanding Soviet and Russian statesman, diplomat, and a brilliant Arabist, was born in Kiev.

🔹 Chairman of the Council of the Union of the USSR Supreme Soviet in 1989-1990
🔹 Foreign Minister of Russia in 1996-1998
🔹 Prime Minister of Russia in 1998-1999

🌐 When Yevgeny Primakov joined the Foreign Ministry, Russia’s foreign policy underwent dramatic changes. In the context of NATO’s focus on expansion without consideration for Moscow’s interests, it seemed futile to carry on the policy of rapprochement with the West.

Under Yevgeny Primakov, Russia began to pursue an independent foreign policy and strive for equal, mutually beneficial cooperation with a wide range of partners.

Yevgeniy Primakov foresaw the emergence of new centres of economic growth and political influence in the world, and made a significant contribution to the development of the concept of multipolarity. He created the Russia-India-China format, which became the prototype of BRICS.

✈️ The legendary U-turn over the Atlantic was one of Mr Primakov's most famous foreign policy episodes. On March 24, 1999, during a flight to the United States, he had the plane turn around over the ocean and returned to Moscow having learned that NATO had started bombing Yugoslavia. This gesture became a symbol of the revision of relations with the West and Russia’s transition to the principle of multi-vector foreign policy.

The memory of Mr Primakov continues to live in the hearts of several generations of scholars, journalists and government officials. In 2016, the Rossiya TV channel released the documentary "My Mind is Set" featuring the recollections of the outstanding diplomat’s friends and colleagues. In 2019, a monument to Yevgeny Primakov was unveiled in front of the Foreign Ministry building.

☝️ Yevgeny Primakov’s ideas remain highly relevant today. We carefully preserve his intellectual heritage and the memory of the outstanding diplomat.
