Although, though, even though, in spite of and despite are all used to link two contrasting ideas or show that one fact makes the other fact surprising.

However, they are used with different structures:

After in spite of and despite, we use a noun, gerund (-ing form of a verb) or a pronoun.

They never made much money, in spite of their success. 💰
In spite of the pain in his leg, he completed the marathon. 🏃 Despite having a headache, I had a great birthday. 🎁 The train was cancelled. In spite of that, we arrived on time. 🚊

Note that it is common to use in spite of and despite with the expression the fact that, followed by a subject and verb!

In spite of the fact that he worked very hard, he didn't get promoted.

GRAMMAR EXPLANATION 💞

After although and even though, we use a subject and a verb. Even though is slightly stronger and more emphatic than although.

I enjoyed the course, although I would have liked more grammar practice. 👀
Although we saw each other every day, we didn't really know each other. 🤔
Even though she spoke very quietly, he understood every word. 🗣️
She didn't get the job, even though she had all the necessary qualifications. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Though can be used in the same way as although. 

Though I wasn't keen on the film, I thought the music was beautiful. 😍

Though can also go at the end of the second phrase. This way of expressing contrasting ideas is most common in spoken English.

We waited ages for our food. The waiter was really nice, though.

Used to + infinitive

We can use used to to talk about past states that are not true any more.

We used to live in New York when I was a little kid. 🗽
Did you use to have a garden? 🌱
I used to be quite clumsy when I was in my early teens. 🤭

We can also use used to to talk about past habits (repeated❗️ past actions) that don't happen any more.

I used to go swimming every Thursday when I was at school. 🏫

She used to smoke but she gave up a few years ago. 👏

Would

We can use would to talk about repeated past actions that don't happen any more.

Every Saturday I would go on a long bike ride with my friends. 🚲
My dad would read me amazing stories every night at bedtime. 🥱

Would for past habits is slightly more formal than used to. It is often used in stories.

We don't ❌ normally use the negative or question form of would for past habits!

Note that we can't usually use would to talk about past states❗️

Past Simple

We can always use it as an alternative to used to or would to talk about past states or habits.

The main difference is that it doesn't emphasise the habitual nature of the action or situation as much.

Also, this tense doesn't make it so clear that the thing is no longer true.

We went to the same beach every summer. (возможно, мы всё ещё туда ходим) 🏖️
We used to go to the same beach every summer. (больше нет!) 🏖️
We would go to the same beach every summer. (больше нет!) 🏖️

If something happened only once, we must use Past Simple.
