Dengue has been in Malaysia for more than 60 years. The dengue trend continued to increase since the first dengue outbreak reported in 1962.

Over these years, MOH has been doing adult mosquito control using fogging and Ultra Low Volume (ULV) spray and larvae control using chemical and biological insecticide.

The Institute for Medical Research (IMR) conducted a study on Wolbachia mosquito in eight localities in 2017. All localities having shown a reduction of dengue cases by as much as 50-80%.

A year after implementation, the innovation has shown positive result as much as 95% of the trial localities showing case reduction.

18 localities show reduction of cases and one locality shows no increment of cases.

Basically, community engagement is a strategy of engaging, empowering and creating ownership in the community to achieve the desired results.

The success or the failure of a community-based project depends on the effectiveness of community engagement.

The Wolbachia Mosquito Operation was a great success and hope this effort will be able to reduce dengue cases and the number of deaths in Malaysia.
