📍Vienna, Central Cemetery, May 9

🔴 Head of Delegation Mr. Konstantin Gavrilov honored the memory of Soviet soldiers at the Central Cemetery.

🔴 The ceremonial events were held with the participation of the diplomatic corps of the CIS countries.

🔴 Soviet military burial at the Central Cemetery of Vienna is one of the largest Soviet military necropolises in Austria. More than 2,640 Soviet soldiers, officers, and civilians who died in the post-war years are buried here.

🔴 The official opening of the Soviet military grave at the Central Cemetery of Vienna took place on August 10, 1946 in the presence of representatives of the military administrations of the allied countries of the anti-Hitler coalition. At the opening ceremony, Austrian Vice-Chancellor Adolf Scherf said: “The soldiers of the Red Army who rest here are always in the thoughts of the Viennese, reflecting both on the past and the future. Preserving the memory of the dead is the moral responsibility of each of us.”

📍Vienna, Schwarzenbergplatz, May 9

🔴 On Victory Day, Head of Delegation Mr. Konstantin Gavrilov, Ambassador of Russia to Austria Dmitrii Lyubinsky, Permanent Representative to International Organizations Mikhail Ulyanov, Permanent Representative to the OSCE Alexander Lukashevich and ambassadors of the #CIS countries laid flowers at the monument to the Soviet soldier.

🎖The decision to install the monument in Vienna was made by the Soviet mil command even before the Red Army entered Austria, since there was no doubt about the success of the Vienna offensive operation. After the devastating battles for the Nazis near Lake Balaton in Hungary in February 1945, the military council of the 4th Guards Army of the 3rd Ukrainian Front announced a competition for the design of the monument.

▪️The names of the soldiers who died heroically during the capture of Vienna are carved on the pedestal. In the battles for this city, 18,000 Red Army soldiers died, and during the liberation of Austria - 27,000.
