#RussiaIran

💬 The Presidents are unanimous that relations between Russia and Iran have reached the highest point in their history.

At the same time, there is significant untapped potential for further advancement in our partnership. To this end, work is now underway on a new and comprehensive “big interstate treaty,” initiated by the President of Iran.

#JCPOA

💬 We will push for the JCPOA to be restored in its original configuration, the way it was approved in 2015 by a UN Security Council resolution, without exceptions or additions, to make sure that the illegal sanctions on Iran that are inconsistent with the JCPOA are lifted.

#Ukraine

It is obvious that Kiev is not ready for dialogue. Vladimir Zelensky churns out all kinds of ideas and peace formulas, with the illusion of succeeding, with the Western assistance, in achieving the withdrawal of our troops from the Russian territories in Donbass, Crimea, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, making Russia pay reparations, voluntarily surrender to international tribunals, etc.

👉 Of course, we will not discuss conditions of this kind with anyone.

#OSCE

Let me tell you right away that the situation within the OSCE has been quite challenging. Created as a platform for promoting equitable dialogue and cooperation, this organisation has been going through a deep crisis these past few years.

We are now reaping the fruits of this selfish, short-sighted policy of our former partners. Our trust in them has suffered a major blow. One of the lessons is that if and when we ever start working together again, we will have to build new foundations because the past approaches are no longer working.

#JCPOA

The model we suggested was straightforward and clear: the United States and Iran move to meet each other halfway at the same time by gradually returning to compliance with the JCPOA. All details were worked out. This is a realistic scenario as long as there is political will to carry it out.

The fact that with the finishing line in sight, the United States and Europeans ran out of gas and focused on efforts to destabilise the internal political situation in Iran is another story.

☝️ Meanwhile, it is a fact of life that there is no reasonable alternative to the JCPOA.

🇷🇺🇮🇷 On August 7-8, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov held consultations in Tehran with the deputy foreign ministers of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ali Bagheri Kani, Reza Najafi and Mehdi Safari.

The focus of the discussion was on the prospects of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (#JCPOA) or the Iran nuclear deal. The diplomats confirmed their shared striving to continue working to preserve and restore full-scale implementation of these vital agreements that were approved by UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and have no reasonable alternative.

🤝 Russia and Iran hold the same view on the challenges that the international community faced in implementing the said resolution due to the policy of “maximum pressure” on Tehran pursued by the US and its associates. The diplomats dismissed as unacceptable any Western attempts to impose new arrangements or approaches to resolving JCPOA-related problems in an effort to undermine Russia and Iran’s legitimate and mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas.

During the consultations, the diplomats compared in detail their positions on a number of other current international issues, including the NPT review process, the state of affairs in the OPCW, security issues and measures to prevent an arms race in space.

⚡️ Foreign Ministry statement on the expiry of certain restrictions as per UN Security Council Resolution 2231

On October 18, requirements set forth in UN Security Council Resolution 2231 on the Iranian missile programme and international cooperation with Tehran on this matter expired.

In the meantime, the United States and European countries had the obligation to undertake a series of practical steps to lift the fundamentally illegal unilateral sanctions against Iran. Taken together, these measures were designed to enable Iran to ratify the Additional Protocol to the IAEA Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.

Russia firmly believes in the need to rigorously comply with and execute to the letter Security Council resolutions in strict keeping with the agreed parameters. Driven by momentary and opportunistic considerations, the attempts by Western countries to retrospectively rethink or to change the provisions contained in UNSC Resolution 2231 and present this as an accomplished fact are illegal, detrimental and undermine the carefully crafted balance of interests which lies at the core of this resolution.

👉 This is not just a matter of the United States consistently failing to abide by this resolution – on October 17, the European Union announced its decision to keep the anti-Iranian restrictions in place, which runs counter to its obligations. In this way, the EU opted for following Washington down the slippery slope of legal nihilism.

❗️ Russia roundly condemns the bad-faith practices of the Western countries. After lengthy deliberations, the Security Council adopted a decision on a specific country in full compliance with the UN Charter, only to see the US and its satellites supplement it with their unilateral sanctions without the Security Council’s approval.

The European countries must immediately renounce their policy of unilateral restrictions on Tehran. Anything less would put the future of the #JCPOA into question and may escalate the situation with the Iranian nuclear programme.
