π·πΊ President Vladimir Putin took part in an expanded meeting of the Defence Ministry Board at the National Defence Control Centre of the Russian Federation.
Important points of the Russian leaderβs statement:
πΊ 2024 has been crucial in achieving the goals of the special military operation. Thanks to the professionalism and courage of our soldiers, the heroic efforts of defence industry workers, and the truly nationwide support for the army and navy, Russian troops maintain a strong strategic initiative along the entire line of contact.
πΊ The military-political situation in the world remains challenging and unstable. Bloodshed continues in the #MiddleEast, and there is a high potential for conflict in a number of other regions of the world.
πΊ #NATOβs ambitions have long surpassed its historical responsibility zone. Apart from the so-called eastern flank, it is also building up its presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
πΊ Equally concerning is the #US activity in developing high-precision ground-based strike systems with a firing range of up to 5,500 km and preparing them for deployment in forward zones.
βοΈ Moreover, the transfer and deployment of these missile systems are already being prepared in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
βοΈ #Russia will lift its voluntary restrictions on the deployment of intermediate- and shorter-range missiles if the US begins to do so.
πΊ Given the escalating geopolitical tensions, Russia must adopt additional measures to ensure its security and the security of its allies. This is done carefully and thoughtfully, without becoming drawn into a full-scale arms race that would damage the socioeconomic development of the country.

π President Vladimir Putin: We are not fighting with the #Ukrainian people, but with the regime β the neo-#Nazi regime in Kiev, which seized power back in 2014. The source of their authority is a state coup.

On Dec 15 of this year, a delegation from the Pan-African Parliament, led by Vice-President Gayo Ashebir, visited the #Donetsk People's Republic as part of their visit to Russia.
π This delegation comprised representatives from 12 #African nations, including #Zambia, #Malawi, #Mozambique, #Tanzania, #Uganda, #SouthSudan, #Zambia, #Ethiopia, among others.
π― The delegates toured the Saur-Mogila memorial complex dedicated to the liberation of #Donbass by Soviet forces in 1943. This complex was destroyed in 2014 during clashes with Ukrainian armed forces and was completely restored in 2022.
Members of the African Parliament said they had come to #Russia to express their support for our nation and all Russians, and to reaffirm the importance of further fortifying Russian-African relations in the face of aggressive external pressure and manipulation by the so-called "collective West."
The delegates showed a profound understanding of the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis, the special military operation, and the role played by Western countries in these events, including the creation of conditions leading to a shortage of Russian fertiliser and grain supplies to the African continent.
One of the outcomes of their visit was the opportunity to form an objective perspective on the situation in the Russian region, which they could then relay to their fellow citizens.
βοΈ A key difference in the approaches of Western nations and Russia towards cooperation with #Africa was also highlighted: according to the Vice-President of the Pan-African Parliament, our nation is characterised by respect for the interests of Africans, and a concern for the development of their economy and social sphere, in contrast to the West driven by the pursuit of profit and neo-colonial ambitions.
These evaluations by African representatives regarding the situation in Ukraine provoked an appalling reaction from the #Kiev regime. Ukraine Foreign Ministry expressed a strong protest, claiming it "contradicts the spirit of friendship and mutual respect that characterises Ukraine's relations with the African continent, and seriously damages the reputation of the Pan-African Parliament."
After that, Ukraine directly threatened the members of the delegation, who began to receive messages detailing what actions would be taken against them. Apparently, this is Ukraine's "relations" with the nations of the African continent.
π·πΊπ From our standpoint, we consider the visit of the Pan-African Parliament delegation to Russia and their visit to the DPR to be a significant step towards the ongoing progressive development of Russian-African relations, in alignment with the decisions of the Russia-Africa summits and the inaugural ministerial conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum held in November.
This is the essence of freedom and democracy β individuals have the opportunity to receive first-hand information and draw their own conclusions.

πΏπ¦ This yearβs opening meeting of the #G20 Foreign Ministers as part of the debut presidency of South Africa β a friendly country whose stance is in accord with #Russiaβs β will take place in Johannesburg on February 20-21, a landmark event not only for Pretoria, but also for the entire African continent, which will host G20 events for the first time.
π·πΊ Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov plans to lead the Russian delegation. It is expected that most of the members of this major economic forum, as well as a wide range of invited states and international organisations, will be represented at a similar level.
βοΈ The meeting will open with an address by President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa, which will set the general tone for discussing global challenges and threats. The discussion will particularly focus on the international situation, which is alarmingly deteriorating under the impact of the confrontational policy by the neoliberal Western elites.
The participants will consider the current integrity and effective functioning of the global economic system. The priorities stated by the South African presidency are designed to encourage economic growth, reduce inequality and imbalances, and ensure equitable access to financing for countries in the Global South.
π€ The South African presidency theme highlighting βsolidarity, equality and sustainabilityβ will provide solid framework for the consultations, essentially continuing in the same vein as its predecessors in 2022-2024 β Indonesia, India and Brazil, all of them Global Majority countries. In particular, this refers to the G20βs significant contribution during this period to strengthening the foundations of the multipolar world and making global economic institutions more democratic in the interests of new non-Western centres of influence, primarily the expanded #BRICS group.
βοΈThe upcoming anniversaries, such as the 80th anniversary of Victory in World War II and the foundation of the #UN, as well as the 65th anniversary of the Russia-sponsored Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples adopted by the UN General Assembly to ensure Africaβs independence, should be seen as key benchmarks for the exchange of views.
π In his remarks, the Minister will provide a detailed analysis of the international situation underscoring the root causes of the current crisis, and outline specific steps to overcome the destructive phenomena. The Russian side will reaffirm its stance in favour of preserving the United Nationsβ central role in global affairs. We will speak in support of strict compliance with the principles of the UN Charter in their entirety and interconnection.
We will insist that there is no alternative to respectful interstate cooperation and ensuring equal and indivisible security for all. We will call for keeping the global economy open, rejecting trade wars, illegitimate sanctions and other unfair competition practices. We will cite examples of supranational associations that practice honest and productive cooperation without diktat or blackmail, such as the #EAEU, the #SCO and #BRICS. We will share the details of implementing the Russia-sponsored Greater Eurasian Partnership initiative.
The Minister is expected to meet with several counterparts on the sidelines of the meeting.

Developing countries remain the object of plundering of raw materials, receive small payments for the development of resources, while former metropolises profit from processing and marketing of that resources.
βοΈ There are many examples repeatedly cited by the leaders of African countries. We are talking about the situation both in the coffee industry and in the mining industry. The countries of origin receive minimal profit from mining, while all capitalization goes to the Western countries.
βοΈ In this context, we welcome the proposal of South Africa to think about solutions that would facilitate the processing of critical minerals directly "at the source".

βοΈ #Opinion by Tamara Andreeva, Junior Researcher at the Institute for African Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences:
Over the decades, thousands of #African students have pursued higher education in the USSR and later in Russia, returning home with valuable knowledge, professional skills, and a deep understanding of Russian culture.
Many have risen to influential roles in government, academia, and business, further solidifying the enduring bond between Russia and Africa.
π Today, around 35,000 African students are studying in #Russia, most of whom are enrolled through quotas that cover not only tuition fees but also dormitory accommodation and provide a monthly stipend.
π In the 2025/26 academic year, Russia will allocate 4,816 state-funded places for students from Africa, slightly more than the 4,746 places in 2024/25. Last year, 14,000 applicants competed for these spots, with 2.7 applicants per place.
π In 2025, the largest number of places will go to applicants from #Egypt, #Algeria, #Angola, #Chad, #Mali, #Congo, #Nigeria, #Zambia, #Benin, #Guinea, and #Zimbabwe.
According to Rossotrudnichestvo, the Russian agency responsible for international cooperation, the most popular fields of study are medicine, economics, IT, international relations, oil and gas, and construction.
π African students are admitted to leading Russian universities, with the Peoplesβ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN) traditionally leading the list, followed by St. Petersburg State University, Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Bauman Moscow State Technical University, and others.

βοΈ Message of greetings to the participants of the meeting of the Russia-South Africa Business Council by Ambassador of Russia to South Africa Roman Ambarov (15 April 2025)
Dear Colleagues,
I extend my sincere greetings to the esteemed participants of the #Russia-#SouthAfrica Business Council meeting.
For the Russian Federation, strengthening mutually beneficial and equitable cooperation with the Republic of South Africa, both on a bilateral basis and within the #BRICS integration framework, is one of the key priorities.
A distinctive feature of our bilateral relations is the high level of political trust, which ensures a stable and constructive dialogue at the highest state level.
π€ Scientific and technological collaboration is developing dynamically, as well as humanitarian initiatives and inter-parliamentary cooperation, creating institutional mechanisms for strengthening of our partnership.
π·πΊπΏπ¦ At the same time, the potential of economic cooperation between Russia and South Africa remains significant and requires the active utilization of all available instruments to fully unlock it.
One of the key mechanisms that can facilitate the deepening of trade and economic ties is the Russia-South Africa Business Council. This platform has the potential to become an effective catalyst for promoting direct, long-term, and trust-based contacts between the business communities of our countries - an essential factor for implementing joint projects across various sectors. Nevertheless, achieving comprehensive and multifaceted trade and economic cooperation between Russian and South Africa requires significant efforts.
βοΈ A key factor in shaping new areas of interaction is the solid historical and political foundation of our bilateral relations. In the evolving geopolitical and economic landscape, it is critically important to identify optimal growth points that fully respond to the mutual interests of our partners. Russia, with its substantial technological, energy, and industrial potential, is fully prepared to offer comprehensive solutions for diversifying and deepening economic ties.
The Embassy, in turn, will continue to contribute what one can to promote the development of sustainable, mutually beneficial and long-term cooperation between our countries and peoples.
I wish you all fruitful and eventful work in the framework of the Russia-South Africa Business Council meeting.

Did you know Russia and South Africa have something majestic in common?
π Whales! These gentle giants migrate and feed in the waters of both nations.
In a move to protect them, the Government of the Russian Federation has officially banned industrial and coastal whaling, including the capture of whales, dolphins, orcas, belugas, and porpoises.
βοΈ The law, signed by President Vladimir Putin, came into force on January 10, 2022. This landmark law not only bans commercial capture but also allows the government to impose further protections in Russia's Exclusive Economic Zone β a major win for ocean conservation.
Chukotka remains the only region in Russia where whaling is still permitted β but only for Indigenous peoples of the North, and strictly for supporting their traditional way of life. This culturally rooted, carefully regulated practice stands apart from commercial hunting and is recognized under international norms.
βοΈ Our country has also been funding major researches into rare and iconic species, like the beluga whale, since 2008. Although not endangered, belugas are key indicators of Arctic marine ecosystem health and are listed in both Russiaβs Red Data Book and the IUCN Red List. President Putin has been personally involved in protecting these iconic animals. In 2009, he took part in an expedition and inspected the beluga whales himself, showing direct support for their conservation.
