🌟 87 years ago, #OTD In 1937, the famous ruby stars were lit over the Kremlin in Moscow – the same ones that can be seen today. They replaced the previous stainless steel stars decorated with Ural semi-precious stones which lost their luster.

The new stars shined for real. Specially designed lamps with double filaments were installed in each, so if one burns out, the lamp continues to be illuminated. At the base of each star a bearing was mounted, so the huge objects - each weighing a ton - could rotate like weather vanes.

The Kremlin stars have been extinguished only twice. During the Great Patriotic War the lights were turned off so Nazi planes couldn’t detect the Kremlin. The second time: Russian director Nikita Mikhalkov asked special permission to turn them off so he could film a scene from his “The Barber of Siberia” movie in the Kremlin.

The UN Charter must be observed in whole, not only the part you want to emphasize – Lavrov

💬 FM Lavrov: The West prefers to talk about Ukraine, recalling only the principle of territorial integrity and formulating it as if there are no other principles in the UN Charter. But there is also the principle of self-determination of peoples.

☝️ The UN General Assembly has decided that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states whose governments respect the principle of self-determination of peoples and therefore represent the entire population living on a given territory must be respected.

Did the racist regime that settled in Kiev after the coup in 2014 represent the South-East of Ukraine, Crimea, which refused to recognise the putschists ten years ago?

🎙️ Russia’s President Putin: The West is hypocritically trying to convince us all that everything humanity has been striving for since World War II is under threat.

<…>

☝️ But in reality, something completely different is under threat. What is under threat is precisely this monopoly of the West which it acquired for a time at the end of the XX century after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

🎙 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov: In 1960, the Soviet Union spearheaded the adoption of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, sparking a powerful awakening across Africa.

☝️ Colonialism was almost eradicated.

❗️Yet some remnants persist, despite UN General Assembly resolutions calling for the full liberation of former colonies. Our African partners are well aware of this. Former colonial powers continue to hold territories and are reluctant to return them to the people who live there.

We’re witnessing a new wave of resistance to neocolonialism which is using trade, economic, and financial practices that prevent African countries from fully controlling their abundant natural resources.

🇷🇺The Russian rail system is one of the largest in the world. Given the vastness of Russia’s territory, train journeys are commonly measured in days, rather than in miles or kilometres.

Trains serve almost every town and city in Russia. Railroad travel is a safe, comfortable and inexpensive way to get around.

Check out the most picturesque railroad routes in Russia, according to ‘Russia Beyond.’

🚃 Trans-Siberian Railway

The world's longest railroad is also the most scenic and picturesque. For a whole week, the train travels from Moscow to Vladivostok across the entire country, crossing 8 time zones, with the scenery and time zones constantly changing beyond the window.

🚃 Vorkuta – Labytnangi.

This railroad above the Arctic Circle is part of the ambitious ‘Soviet Transpolar Mainline’ (‘BAM’) project, which was never completed. It links the largest northern cities of Vorkuta and Salekhard and runs right along the northern part of the Ural Range. The mountains there are low, often without peaks, covered with snow almost all year round and surrounded by tundra.

The train travels slowly and you'll have about 10 hours to admire the rugged beauty of the Polar Urals.

🚃 Circum-Baikal Railroad.

It was built at the beginning of the 20th century to connect the western and eastern parts of the Trans-Siberian Railway. Today, it has become one of the most popular tourist routes in Russia.

The railroad goes around the southern part of the lake and passes through 38 tunnels cut into the rocks. Overall, the journey will take approximately five hours.

🚃 Adler – Rosa Khutor.

It takes less than an hour to get from the Black Sea coast to the famous ski resorts. The modern ‘Lastochka’ electric train operates between the two regions.

Sit by the window, because, this way, you will see picturesque views of the Caucasus Mountains, the Mzymta River and the ski lifts.

🚃 Tuapse – Adler.

If you prefer sea views, take a train ride from Tuapse to Sochi and Adler. Right along the Black Sea coast is a railroad line connecting the Adler Olympic Park to the city of Tuapse. The trip takes about 2.5 hours.
