🎵Check out the world-famous “Flight of the Bumblebee” authored by Russian composer Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov. Though initially crafted between 1899 and 1900 as an interlude for his renowned opera - “The Tale of Tsar Saltan,” the piece has grown into one of the most celebrated classical compositions, subject to its frequent usage in the popular culture.
🎹The composition is recognizable for its frantic pace when played up to tempo, with nearly uninterrupted runs of chromatic sixteenth notes. It imitates the insect “bumblebee,” flying and buzzing throughout – replicating its journey.
☝️The original piece was specifically intended for the orchestra, but it has experienced countless diverse arrangements for various instruments - both ensemble and solo. Most notably, it ended up being a popular piece for guitarists, who use it to display their technical prowess.

🎼Watch Rammstein leader Till Lindemann singing the Soviet song ‘Lyubimy Gorod’ in Russian. The single was released in 2021 for the original motion picture “Devyatayev.”
🎹 Translated as “Beloved Town,” the piano-led ballad was composed by Yevgeniy Dolmatovsky (lyrics) and Nikita Bogoslovsky. It was originally performed by Mark Bernes in 1939.
✈️ The movie “Devyatayev,” directed by Timur Bekmambetov, is about the Soviet pilot Mikhail Devyatayev (1917 – 2002), who was captured by Germany during World War II. He leads an escape from a concentration camp on the island of Uzedom in the Baltic Sea by hijacking an aircraft.

🎼How a Russian Romance Song Became a Hit
🎧You have probably heard this song under the title “Those were the days”. Its most widely known recording was by Mary Hopkin, released in 1968. It became a #1 hit in the UK singles chart and reached #2 in the US. Paul McCartney, who produced the session, also recorded her singing "Those Were The Days" in four other languages (Spanish, German, Italian, and French).
🎻Originally, however, this song is a Russian romance written by Boris Fomin (music) and Konstantin Podrevskyi (lyrics) in the first quarter of the 20th century. It is called “Dorogoi Dlinnoiu” (“By the Long Road”). Russian singers Tamara Tsereteli and Alexander Vertinsky made what were probably the earliest recordings of the song, in 1925 and 1926 respectively.
✍️English lyrics written by US musician Eugene Raskin in fact have nothing in common with the Russian text.
Video: Mary Hopkin "Those Were The Days" on The Ed Sullivan Show, October 27, 1968, and Sergey Lazarev on Channel 1's "Phantom of the Opera" show, October 1, 2011
