📆 #OTD, on 19 March 1898, the solemn opening of the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg took place.

It is the world’s largest depository of Russian fine art and one of the largest art museums with total area over 30 ha.

✍️ It was the first museum of Russian art, initiated by emperor Alexander III. Later, in 1895, Emperor Nikolay II signed a decree ordering “the foundation of a special establishment named ‘The Russian Museum of Emperor Alexander III’ and the assignment of Mikhailovsky Palace with all outbuildings, services and the garden, specially acquired by the state treasury for this purpose”.

🖼 The museum collection contains over 400,000 exhibits covering all major periods and trends in the history of Russian art, all main types and genres, trends and schools of Russian art over more than a thousand years: from the X to the XXI century.

"Follow your own path, seek your own style, and never imitate others; art doesn’t tolerate stencils."

🎨 Today, August 5th, we celebrate the 180th birthday of Ilya Repin (1844-1930), one of Russia’s most illustrious painters, graphic artists, and educators.

Known for his deep commitment to Russian realism, Repin's legacy continues to shape our understanding of 19th and 20th-century Russian art.

From exploring themes of history, religion, and social injustice to capturing the beauty of humanity and nature, Repin’s realistic approach produced hundreds of profound works. Even in his later years, when age took its toll, he remained dedicated to his craft, never compromising on authenticity.

🖼 Ilya Repin gained fame early in his career; by the age of thirty, his painting "Barge Haulers on the Volga" had already brought him widespread recognition. This masterpiece captured attention not only in Russia but across Europe. In 1878, Repin was invited to join the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions.

Repin left behind over five hundred works, including drawings, sketches, and paintings. Most of his significant pieces are housed in major museums, such as the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the USA.

📆 #OTD in 1856, Apollinarius Vasnetsov was born. Younger brother to the renowned painter Viktor Vasnetsov, Apollinarius carved out his own legacy as an artist, scientist, historian, and poet of Russian nature.

While he studied history and archaeology, his art focused on native landscapes and the old city of Moscow.

Growing up in the small village of Ryabovo in Vyatka province, Apollinarius was deeply influenced by his father, a priest with a passion for natural sciences and astronomy. His father’s love for the Motherland was instilled in his children, shaping Apollinarius’s own appreciation for the Russian North.

🎨 This deep connection is vividly portrayed in his masterpiece, “Motherland,” and in his monumental landscapes such as “Taiga in the Urals. Blue Mountain” and “Mountain Lake. Ural.” His epic vision culminates in the evocative “Elegy,” which won a silver medal at the Paris World Exhibition.

Apollinarius Vasnetsov's work continues to be celebrated by his admirers both in Russia and abroad.
