Ballet “The Nutcracker” by Pyotr Tchaikovsky has become a symbol of magical transformation and the eternal renewal of life. And due to this, an inevitable part of the Christmas tradition.
🩰 Adapted from Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann’s story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”, it was premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St.Petersburg in 1892. The original production was unsuccessful, but the 20-minute suite that Tchaikovsky extracted from the ballet became very popular.
🌐 Outside Russia, the ballet was first performed in England in 1934. The famous George Balanchine's staging of “The Nutcracker” took place in New York City Ballet in 1954.
🌲 Since the late 1960s, P.Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” has become immensely popular in Russia and abroad. It has been performed by hundreds ballet companies primarily during the Christmas season.
