🇷🇺🇺🇳 Russia's position at the seventy-eighth session of the UN General Assembly
The primary objective of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly is to reaffirm the central and coordinating role of the universal Organization in global affairs and to strengthen the multipolar system of international relations.
Read in full
👉 We have consistently advocated strengthening the multilateral framework of international relations and world economy based on the universal norms of international law, first and foremost the provisions of the UN Charter, focusing on the unconditional respect for the sovereign equality of states and non-interference in their internal affairs.
❗️ It is pivotal to prevent a small group of Western countries from taking control of the UN by striving to substitute generally recognized principles of cooperation between the states with non-consensual constructs.
#UN
The UN Security Council reform should aim to strengthen the representation of developing states from Africa, Asia and Latin America in the Security Council without prejudice to the UNSC's effectiveness and operational efficiency. Low twenties seems the optimum number of members of the reformed Council.
We support realistic initiatives to revitalize the work of the UN General Assembly within the relevant Ad Hoc Working Group. It is of paramount importance to fine-tune UNGA working methods, streamline its overloaded agenda and strengthen multilingualism.
#Sanctions
Sanctions are an important auxiliary tool for the UNSC to suppress activities threatening international peace and security. They must not be used as a means of punishment. They should be carefully measured, targeted and time-limited and take into account political, socio-economic, human rights and humanitarian consequences.
❗️It is unacceptable to introduce, in addition to UNSC sanctions, further unilateral coercive measures, especially those with extraterritorial effect. We advocate for including this requirement in relevant SC resolutions.

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks and answers to media questions following the 20th Session of the Valdai International Discussion Club (Sochi, October 2, 2023)
#MultipolarWorld
Today we talked about changes taking place in the international arena. The world is becoming multipolar. The expansion of BRICS is the main evidence of this. BRICS is seen as a reliable partner and as a structure that will not disappoint and will help each member feel more confident.
#UN
UN reform must reflect the reality of a multipolar world where the West can no longer claim the role that it is seeking to maintain either fairly or otherwise. The process is underway. We are taking an active part in it.
#Russophobia
What strikes me most is the speed with which the outward civility has fallen away from practically all Europeans, the front they have been hiding behind in recent years, retaining not only the remnants of diplomacy but also traces of elementary ethics. This is a manifestation of what is usually called Nazism – just in relation of Russians.
#SouthCaucasus
We are working with our Azerbaijani colleagues and neighbours to stabilise the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, to strengthen trust, and create conditions for the Armenians and Azerbaijanis to resume their normal life together. I hope that Yerevan should also have a stake in that and will undertake efforts to this end.

🗣 It is quite telling that Washington, London, and their allies never mention, let alone engage, the foundational charter principle that the Organisation is based on − the principle of the sovereign equality of all its members.
This principle is meant to ensure that all countries have a dignified place in the world, regardless of their size, form of government, or political and socioeconomic structure. However, the West is trying to divide the world into democracies which can do as they please, and others, which must serve the interests of the golden billion. Western exceptionalism is epitomised by EU's top diplomat Josep Borrell publicly calling Europe a garden, and the rest of the world a jungle. This is not sovereign equality, but pure colonialism.

🇷🇺 President of Russia Vladimir Putin at the extraordinary G20 Summit:
💬 I understand that this war [in Ukraine] and the loss of life are shocking and could not be otherwise.
❓But what about the bloody coup in Ukraine in 2014, which was followed by the Kiev regime’s war against its own people in Donbass? Did that not shock you? Are you not shocked by the extermination of civilians in Palestine and the Gaza Strip today? Did it not shock you when the UN Secretary-General said that Gaza has turned into a huge children’s graveyard?

We took note of a photo published in BusinessDay on 22 November 2023 and yet again noticed a convenient way of joggling the facts used by the Western media.
❌ The photo shows alleged “Russian missile strike at a hospital” with the caption below the said picture quoting the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine as saying that over 10,000 civilians have been recorded killed in Ukraine since February 2022, incl 560 children.
Everything needed to convince the readership of Russians deliberately targeting civilians, attacking civil infrastructure, carpet bombing of the Ukrainian territory, etc.
We wish there were no civilian casualties, but unfortunately, military action always results in human costs. Especially when civilians are widely used as human shields.
☝️ Yet to comprehend what the outcome of strikes on civil infrastructure may be, take a look at the situation in Gaza.
❗️Latest reports from the UN health authorities indicate that more than 13,000 civilians in total, with more than 4,100 children among them, have died in the enclave since the fighting began on 7 October 2023. 67 per cent of people killed in Gaza are estimated to be women and children.
‼️Once again, 13,000 civilians in less than 2 months. Do you think that if Russian army really targeted civilians in Ukraine for almost 21 month, would this number be less than in Gaza?
You know the answer. The numbers speak for themselves.

📆 Today, on December 14, the world celebrates 63 years since the adoption of the UN Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.
✍️ The text reads that the UN “Solemnly proclaims the necessity of bringing to a speedy and unconditional end to colonialism in all its forms and manifestations.”
☝️The declaration was initiated by the USSR. Despite the resistance of France and the United Kingdom, which were interested in preserving their colonial possessions, the Soviet draft declaration was approved by majority vote at the UN General Assembly.
Owing to the efforts of Soviet diplomacy, the UN also established a Special Committee on Decolonisation (C-24). As a result, the UN began to play a key role in the acquisition of independence by former colonial territories.
❗️Having put forth the need for the unconditional elimination of colonialism in the world, the declaration became one of the main documents of that time and played a truly historical role. As a result of its implementation, about 750 million people were freed of the colonial yoke and over 80 new states emerged in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania. With time they began taking an active role in resolving major issues in modern world politics and the economy.
🇷🇺🤝🌍 Russia continues the Soviet cause of promoting global decolonisation, and facilitating the socio-economic, cultural and political development of the peoples that have shed the fetters of colonialism.

☝️ Those who believe to be distant from politics may have missed it, but we cannot be silent about the results of the vote in the UN General Assembly on a Resolution to Combat the Glorification of Nazism, which makes a real contribution to the eradication of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, held on 19 December.
This year the vote (118 countries in favour, while 49 – against) showed the mounting attempts of some states to dispute the results of the World War II enshrined in the UN Charter.
❗️The countries that voted against the resolution, first of all Germany 🇩🇪, Italy🇮🇹 and Japan 🇯🇵, displayed an undisguised sacrilege against victims of Nazism, fascism and militarism.
❌ Rejecting historic memory in pursuit of geopolitical, self-serving and opportunistic interests, Germany and Italy as the former Axis States acted irresponsibly. It raises doubt about sincerity of their previous acknowledgments of their guilt and responsibility for unleashing of the World War II.
⚠️ Such actions are also at odds with their commitments to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter they’d assumed when joining the Organization. Do they want to question the very principles that the UN is based on?
This position of Germany, Italy and Japan as well as some other countries that fought against the anti-Hitler coalition, demonstrates a prematurity of discussions about revising the UN Charter aiming to cancel its language related to “enemy states”.
☝️The UN member-states according to the Charter have responsibility to spare future generations the scourge of war. However, it looks like the countries that voted against the resolution are to be reminded of crimes against humanity committed by the states that supported Hitler.

🇷🇺🇨🇳📞 On January 10, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke over the phone with Foreign Minister of the People's Republic of China Wang Yi.
🤝 The Ministers summed up and spoke positively of the key outcomes of cooperation in 2023, expressing satisfaction with the high tempo of the political dialogue and practical cooperation, which are marked by stability and positive dynamics amid the global geopolitical instability.
They focused on the implementation of agreements reached at the top political level and highlighted the importance of Russian-Chinese strategic interaction to create a just multipolar international order and, in particular, to ensure that the foundations of Eurasian security are solid.
📈 They noted that bilateral trade and economic cooperation has successfully overcome external challenges, with Russia-China trade passing the $200 billion mark as of the end of the year.
Sergey Lavrov and Wang Yi touched on a number of priority items on the international agenda, including the Ukraine crisis, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the situation surrounding the Korean Peninsula and the Asia-Pacific region in general.
They underscored their rejection of the Western bloc’s confrontational policy towards Russia and China, and the attempts to hold back their development using sanctions, deliberate provocations and other illegitimate means.
☝️ They also noted the purely constructive nature of interaction between Moscow and Beijing within the #UN, the #SCO, #BRICS and other multilateral formats, which is not directed against third countries. The Chinese side expressed support for Russia’s BRICS chairmanship. The Ministers exchanged views on ways to facilitate China’s contacts with the #CIS.
