🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks at the opening ceremony of the rowing slalom canal
📍 Bogorodskoye, August 17, 2023
💬 Today, we are attending a momentous and historical event. We are opening a worldclass canal that meets all international criteria and even exceeds them in some ways, for the first time in our country.
It took us a long time to reach this date. For many years, we had to overcome obstacles that were not related to water rapids but demanded mobilisation of our efforts together with our main sponsor, RusHydro, owing to which we managed to resolve all the problems.
The canal meets the highest international standards. I am sure it will host both domestic and international competitions.
🚣 The main result is that we have received a great place for training masters and holding competitions here at home. Until now, our leading athletes, national, regional and club teams had to hold training sessions abroad. Now there is no need for this. I think our foreign colleagues will be asking us if they can hold training sessions here, in this great facility.

⭐️ #OTD in 1921, legendary Soviet fighter pilot Lidiya Litvyak was born. She went down in history under the call sign «White Lily». According to legend, this flower was painted on her aircraft.
Since childhood, Lidiya had dreamed of conquering the sky. Already at the age of 14, she enrolled in an aeroclub, and at 15, she made her first solo flight. After graduating from the aviation school, the 19-year-old herself prepared cadets for flights.
⚔️ After the start of the Great Patriotic War, Litvyak enrolled in the women’s 586th Fighter Aviation Regiment, where she piloted the Yakovlev Yak-1 fighter.
In September, Lidiya participated in the fierce battles over Stalingrad. Due to her successes in the sky, Litvyak was transferred to the 9th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, the «regiment of aces». After the successful counter-offensive at Stalingrad in 1943, Lydiya Litvyak was sent to fight in the skies over Donbass.
🕯 On August 1, 1943, during the defence of Donbass, Litvyak engaged in an air battle with several Messerschmitts, which were superior to the Yak-1 in speed and manoeuvrability. The radio operators intercepted alarming reports from the pilots in the sky: «Lily has been shot down!». The crash site of the Litvyak fighter could not be found for decades. At the time of her last combat mission, she was only 21 years old.
The «White Lily» carried out 168 combat sorties and destroyed 16 enemy aircraft (12 solo and four shared victories). She became the most effective female pilot of World War II.

🎙 Comment by Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on the Ukraine crisis
❗️ The criminal Kiev regime keeps attacking Russian cities and villages using large-calibre artillery, attack drones and cluster munitions supplied by NATO countries.
On August 9 alone, 4 people were killed by strikes in Donetsk and Svetlodarsk, including a girl born in 2019, and 12 people were wounded, among them a teenager born in 2006. Civilians continue to fall victim to the Lepestok anti-personnel mines. As of August 15, there were reports of 126 civilians affected by mine explosions, 11 of them children.
Zelensky’s regime actively employs drones for terrorist attacks. The Zelensky regime’s attempt to strike the centre of Moscow last night is further proof of the criminal nature of the regime.
***
We have taken note of a draft law on amendments to the Law on National Minorities (Communities) of Ukraine registered in the Verkhovna Rada on August 13.
Discrimination against ethnic Russians remains legally fixed. This means that millions of native inhabitants of the former Soviet Ukraine are denied any protection of their rights. Moreover, there is a new item introducing additional restrictions on the Russian language.
In this way, the Kiev regime is again demonstrating its Nazi essence. It is not only conducting a de facto policy of segregation but also officially recording it in government legal regulations.
***
The Ukrainian authorities continue their war against the canonic Orthodox Church. On August 9, the Kiev Commercial Court satisfied a lawsuit by the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra Historical and Cultural Reserve against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church on the removal of obstacles to using the Lavra’s property. This allowed the Kiev regime to legitimise the raider’s assault on the Lavra – on August 15, the police seized three of its buildings.
☝️ By expelling the canonic church from its tenement, the Kiev regime is fulfilling the Anglo-Saxon order to destroy Orthodox culture.

🔹 The ill-conceived policy pursued by the United States and its followers has made the current aggravation of the international situation inevitable despite our many years of attempts to prevent it, which is another manifestation of that degradation. I am referring to the full-scale crisis of European security, the blame for which lies entirely with our former partners.
🔹 Modern Russia sees its mission in maintaining a global balance of interests and building a fairer architecture of international relations. We believe that creating favourable conditions for the peaceful and steady development of humanity on the basis of a unifying agenda should be a universal priority.
🔹 A great danger in the context of the Ukrainian conflict is linked with the fact that the United States and NATO countries, while gearing up for confrontation, run the risk of becoming involved in a direct armed clash between nuclear powers. We think that this course of events can and must be prevented.
🔹 The essential thing we must understand is that the West wants to do away with our country as a serious geopolitical rival. It is for this reason that Washington and Brussels have unleashed a hybrid war against us.
🔹 The West must understand: Russia will use all means to defend its people and its vital interests. It would be better for our opponents to understand that confrontation with Russia is futile and switch to more civilised, i.e., political and diplomatic means for achieving a balance of interests.
🔹 Lecturing other states or dictating to them which partners to choose or avoid is not what we do. Russia does not forbid any of our neighbours or partners from establishing ties with anyone, but always asks them to consider our legitimate interests. I think they hear us.

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s greetings to the participants and guests of the 6th Global Forum of Young Diplomats
💬 Your diplomatic forum has acquired wonderful traditions in recent years. Based on a “horizontal diplomacy” approach, it provides a fine opportunity for young specialists employed by foreign policy services, representatives of government agencies, and experts to hold an informal exchange of views on key international issues.
This pooling of intellectual effort aimed at expanding the space of mutual understanding is particularly valuable in the current turbulent geopolitical situation.
🌐 I cannot but stress the topicality of your forum’s theme, Diplomacy in a New Multipolar World. The emergence of a polycentric world order is a lengthy process related primarily to the democratisation of interstate relations which should be based on the universally recognised norms of international law and take into account the civilisational diversity of the world.
🇷🇺 Russia consistently advocates the position that every country must have a say in global decision-making. Russian diplomacy is open to close interaction with those, who, like us, share the values of equality, mutual respect, and non-interference in internal affairs of others.

🎙️ Comment by Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on the anniversary of Russian journalist Darya Dugina’s murder by Ukrainian special services
💬 The life of talented young journalist Darya Dugina was tragically cut short on August 20, 2022. The investigative authorities of the Russian Federation have established that the brutal murder of the Russian journalist was organised and executed by the Ukrainian special services. The Kiev regime, under the guidance of its Western curators, is ready to commit any bloody crimes, including the organisation and execution of terrorist attacks to eliminate objectionable representatives of the media community. This once again confirms the criminal essence of Vladimir Zelensky’s dictatorship.
The cynical killing of Darya Dugina was followed by a series of attempted murders and assassinations of Russian journalists and public opinion leaders committed by Ukrainian neo-Nazis.
<…>
A year after the tragic death of Darya Dugina we have not heard a single word from relevant organisations and human rights institutions about this and many other deliberate atrocities committed against those media representatives whose point of view does not coincide with the one approved by the collective West (an insipid comment by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay expressing regret about the death of Rostislav Zhuravlev does not count).
Hypocrisy, dividing journalists into the “good” and “bad”, “ours” and “theirs” is what prevails in the activities of those organisations.
❗️ We would like to once again draw the attention of international human rights organisations and the judiciary to the fact that the rights of journalists are being flagrantly violated and terrorist methods are being used against them.

⭐️ On August 20, 1941, the crew of a KV-1 tank under the command of Senior Lieutenant Zinovy Kolobanov took out 22 Nazi tanks in one battle.
The legendary encounter occurred near Krasnogvardeisk (Gatchina), where commander of the heavy tank company Kolobanov had been ordered to hold back the advance of German troops towards Leningrad.
⚔️ Kolobanov and his unit took up well-prepared defence positions and set up an ambush. When the enemy’s hardware reached the site, the senior lieutenant’s crew took out the first and last vehicles with precise strikes. The German column was stranded on a narrow road and could not escape from the armour-piercing shells of the Soviet tank.
Thanks to the tactical genius, Kolobanov’s company of five tanks destroyed 43 enemy tanks and armoured vehicles on that day and left the battle site without any losses only after they had run out of munitions. The senior lieutenants’ KV-1 tank had 156 hit marks on its armour but none of the shells pierced it.
☝️ Kolobanov and his subordinates’ feat is unparalleled. The battle near Krasnogvardeisk became one of the most successful tank battles in world history. The actions of the senior lieutenant significantly slowed down the advance of the Nazis towards Leningrad.

🕯 Today is the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, when we recall the victims of terrorist attacks and commit to protect the rights of survivors of such crimes.
Terrorism poses a serious threat to international peace and security, from which no country is safe. Every year, thousands of people suffer and die at the hands of terrorists.
❗️ Today, the Kiev regime openly uses terrorist methods. Ukrainian nationalists attack Russian civilian infrastructure located thousands of kilometres away from the conflict zone, and use terror tactics against Russian journalists. NATO countries support these barbaric actions, continuing to supply weapons to Kiev and train soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
☝️ It is important to remember that terrorism is a crime that cannot be justified regardless of when, why and by whom the terrorist act was committed.
🌐 Russia stands for improving the effectiveness and coordination of multilateral cooperation in countering terrorism, including within the framework of the UN. Our country regularly proposes initiatives to the international community, aimed at cutting ideological and financial support for terrorists and preventing terrorist recruitment.

BRICS: Towards a Just World Order
Key points:
💬 Tectonic shifts are taking place in the world today. <...> We are witnessing the emergence of a more just multipolar world order. New centers of economic growth & of global decision-making on important political issues in Eurasia, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Africa & Latin America are guided primarily by their own interests & assign paramount importance to national sovereignty.
🇷🇺 Russia continues to work towards further democratization of international life, building an architecture of inter-State relations that would be based on the values of equal & indivisible security, and cultural & civilisational diversity, and would provide equal opportunities for development for all members of the international community with no one left behind.
• Russia has consistently stood for strengthening the position of the African continent in a multipolar world order. We will further support our African friends in their aspirations to play an increasingly significant role in resolving the key problems of our time.
• #BRICS is a symbol of true multipolarity and an example of honest inter-State communication. Within its framework, States with different political systems, distinctive value platforms & independent foreign policies effectively cooperate in various spheres.
📈 The population of the BRICS countries is over 40 percent & the area of their territories exceeds a quarter of the world's land. According to experts' forecasts, in 2023 the five countries will account for about 31.5 percent of global GDP (at purchasing power parity), while the share of the G7 has fallen to 30 percent in this indicator.
• It is natural that our grouping has many like-minded countries around the world. BRICS is seen as a positive force that can strengthen the solidarity of the Global South & Global East & become one of the pillars of a new, more just polycentric world order.

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s greetings to the organisers, participants and guests of the University International Sports Festival
💬 I offer my greetings to the organisers, participants and guests of the University International Sports Festival. The fact that Yekaterinburg, the capital of the Urals located right in the centre of Eurasia at the crossroads of a diverse of mix of traditions and culture, hosts these competitions is a very powerful symbol.
Russia has consistently advocated honest, open and politics-free dialogue with other countries. In this context, promoting sports ties serves as an important tool for reinforcing the spirit of cooperation and mutual understanding between our nations. We have many like-minded people who share this belief, as evidenced in all clarity by the participation of our partner states from #BRICS, the #SCO and #CIS in the upcoming sports festival.
I am certain that the atmosphere of healthy competition which reigns supreme over this festival will not only help promote an active lifestyle, but will also help further consolidate the bonds of friendship and mutual sympathy among the young people of our countries.

💬 The lack of solution to the Palestinian problem is the reason for recurrence of deadly outbreaks of violence in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone, which pose an ever-growing threat to stability and security in the Middle East.
🔹What adds to the protracted years-long stagnation of the peace process is the incessant unilateral and illegitimate steps by Israel that create irreversible facts on the ground and basically reduce to a zero any prospects for recovering direct talks among Palestinians and Israelis on a universally recognized international legal basis, which has at its core a two-state formula, which we unfailingly support.
🔹This year also risks becoming one of the deadliest. More than 200 Palestinians have been killed (including women and minors), thousands have been injured.

⚡️Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s comment on the EU’s decision to include the Foundation for Supporting and Protecting the Rights of Compatriots Living Abroad on the sanctions list
💬Recently, the Westerners waging a sanctions war against Russia took things to the point of absurdity again on humanitarian and human rights issues, areas that should be free from distortion and double standards by definition.
We are referring to the EU’s decision to include in one of its latest sanctions packages a non-governmental and strictly human rights organisation like the Foundation for Supporting and Protecting the Rights of Compatriots Living Abroad.
The Russian Foreign Ministry and the Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs, Compatriots Living Abroad, and International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo) established this legal mechanism to provide legal assistance to our diaspora abroad in 2011. It is an instrument of emergency legal aid for our compatriots. It provides them with legal, consultative, and, if necessary, humanitarian assistance when they face difficult circumstances for different reasons.
🤷♀️ It is even difficult to understand what all this has to do with the Foundation’s alleged efforts to sow instability and division in many countries neighbouring on Russia, which have scared the EU so much?
❗️This discriminatory policy of the EU unties the hands of the Russophobes that are aware of their impunity.
The open and essentially politicised persecution of Russian and Russian-speaking public activists for their strictly human rights activities must certainly receive an unbiased assessment from prominent international institutions, primarily, the UN.
☝️ No doubt, we will help the Foundation raise these issues in international organisations and before the world public and the media. We will also assist it in its further vigorous efforts to help our compatriots defend their rights and lawful interests as the Foundation has already declared

🇷🇺 On August 22, Russia celebrates National Flag Day, established by Presidential Executive Order On National Flag Day of the Russian Federation dated August 20, 1994.
#OTD, we pay tribute to the official state symbol of Russia, which, along with its emblem and anthem, marks its sovereignty and independence, and reaffirms the continuity of many generations of the country’s multiethnic people.
⚓️ The Russian tricolor is more than three centuries old. Peter the Great is considered the creator: in 1705, he issued an order according to which they should raise a white-blue-and-red flag “on all merchant ships.” However, it was only given official national flag status in 1896, on the eve of the coronation of Nicholas II.
On December 25, 2000, the Federal Constitutional Law On the State Flag of the Russian Federation was adopted, under which the state flag of Russia was a rectangular panel of three equal horizontal stripes: the top one was white, the middle one was blue and the bottom one was red.
⚪️🔵🔴 It is believed that white represents peace and dignity; blue, loyalty and honesty; and red, courage and valour.
Today, the tricolor has firmly become part of our lives as an integral element of Russian statehood, a symbol of the unity of the people, their devotion to the Fatherland, and their readiness to defend Russia’s national interests.
