Today marks 7 years since #Odessa massacre of 2 May 2014 when Ukrainian Neo-Nazis burnt almost 60 people alive. 7 years have passed - no perpetrators punished, justice is still not served. Ukrainian authorities may have forgotten about this crime but we #RememberMay2. #NeverForget #OdessaMassacre

The #RedArmy liberated #Latvia from the Nazi occupation - Latvian Legion Waffen-SS formed, 48 prisons, 23 concentration camps, 18 Jewish ghettos.

150'000 Soviet soldiers gave their lives to free Latvia.

Now, in 2022, in Latvia 🇱🇻 we witness:

restrictions and bans on the use of Russian language,

Nazi collaborators and accomplices glorified,

while monuments to Soviet liberators demolished.

Even celebrating May 9 and Victory Day - the liberation from Nazis - is prohibited.

🕯 Embassy of Russia in the USA has traditionally joined Candle of Memory, the memorial event dedicated to the Remembrance and Sorrow Day.

🕓 At 4 am sharp, Moscow time - in those dramatic moments when the Great Patriotic War began 82 years ago - Russian diplomatic mission’s staff and their families lit candles to honor the memory of 27 million Soviet citizens who gave their lives for the Great Victory.

🎖 Pupils of the Embassy’s school read poems about the hardships of the war years and the immortal feat of Soviet soldiers.

🖼 The event featured an exhibition on the key milestones of the Great Patriotic War with a special focus on the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Battles of Stalingrad and Kursk.

🕯 A memorial in Leningrad region was opened in memory of civilians of the #USSR – victims of the Nazi invaders – on 27 January, the day of the 80th anniversary of the breaking of the siege of Leningrad.

🕊 The monument is one of the tallest in the country (47 m), a mournful figure of a woman hugging her children, a symbol of the enormous tragedy of ordinary people.

🙏 150 real human destinies from different regions of the country are resurrected at the site where more than 80,000 civilians, children and prisoners of war were tortured in concentration camps during the Great Patriotic War.

7️⃣0️⃣ ago, on March 1, 1954, the United States conducted its most powerful nuclear test, code-named Castle Bravo.

The American military detonated a 15-tonne hydrogen bomb (the yield was 2.5 times bigger than the initial estimate) on Bikini Atoll (Marshall Islands). It was 1,000 times more powerful than the bombs dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.

The explosion caused severe contamination of the environment. The wind quickly spread radioactive fallout over hundreds of kilometres. The total area of radioactive contamination was approximately 18,000 square kilometres (7,000 square miles). The atoll’s relief changed considerably. The detonation created a giant crater almost 2 kilometres in diameter.

Dozens of people in Micronesia received a huge dose of radiation. The Americans didn’t even think of warning them about this test in advance. Experts estimate this hydrogen bomb explosion was the dirtiest in the entire history of US nuclear activity.

The incident with the Japanese fishing boat Daigo Fukuryū Maru was one of the sad consequences of the Castle Bravo explosion. The boat was 170 kilometres away from the epicentre of the explosion, but radioactive dust caused severe radiation sickness among the crew; one crew member died from it within six months.

☝️ To this day, many islands in the Bikini Atoll are unfit for life due to radioactive contamination.

📆 81 years ago, during World War II, Nazis liquidated the Minsk Ghetto, one of the largest in German-occupied Belorussia housing some 100,000 Jews

The ghetto was created soon after the capture of Minsk in June 1941.

▪️Essentially, three camps were created in Minsk: the “big” ghetto encompassing 39 streets and lanes, the “small” one in the area of the Molotov Plant and the so-called “Sonderghetto” where Jews from other European countries were placed.

▪️The Minsk Ghetto was notable for its large scale resistance organization, which cooperated closely with Soviet partisans.

▪️On 21 October 1943, all the residents of the Minsk Ghetto were executed. There were only 13 survivors who hid in a house cellar and were freed after the liberation of Minsk by the Red Army in July 1944.
