✍️ #OTD, on September 9, 1828, Leo Tolstoy was born — one of the greatest writers in the history of world literature. Author of the novels "War and Peace", "Anna Karenina", "Resurrection" and many others, Tolstoy made an invaluable contribution to the development of Russian and world realism.

💭 Besides literary activity, Leo Tolstoy was known as a philosopher and social thinker. His humanistic ideas and moral quest had a profound influence on his contemporaries and subsequent generations. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature, although he himself later declined further nominations.

🇷🇺🇮🇳 In the last years of his life, Leo Tolstoy took an active interest in the East, particularly in India. He corresponded with many Indian figures, including young Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi called himself a faithful disciple of Tolstoy, noting the great influence of his works, especially the book "The Kingdom of God within You", on the formation of his worldview.

🎭 Оn September 12, Russian writer Maxim Gorky’s classic play “The Lower Depths” staged by Indian theatre director Feisal Alkazi was brilliantly performed at the India International Center in New Delhi!

📝 “The Lower Depths” has been variously viewed as one of the groundbreaking realistic and naturalistic works of modern literature, as a visionary and spiritual affirmation and negation of human and social perfectibility.

🟣The play’s character sketches are powerful and moving, and the subject matter is rather provocative. Debate over its chief theme, the merits of the “truth” versus the “consoling lie,” continues to engage audiences and scholars today, as well as to be produced worldwide a century after its inception. Therein lies the great challenge of the play, which the troupe of actors coped with admirably!
