🍇 #OTD, August 24, 1845, Knyaz Lev Golitsyn, the legendary Russian winemaker and founder of Russian winemaking in the Crimea, was born.

🟣 Golitsyn created a famous estate in Novy Svet, where he built a castle house with towers, laid a picturesque road and walking trail, and arranged unique wine cellars.

🟣 Thanks to Golitsyn, the first Russian sparkling wines appeared, Crimean wines were recognized at international exhibitions, and winemaking in Russia reached a new level.

#OTD 545 years ago, on August 29, 1479, the Assumption (Dormition) Cathedral in Moscow was consecrated, a place of crucial importance for Russian identity.

The origins of the Cathedral are closely connected with the rise of Moscow Principality of Russia.

In 1326, the leading Russian church prelate, Metropolitan Peter of Vladimir, made the Moscow Kremlin his de facto residence. Currently, Great Prince Ivan Kalita launched the construction of the cathedral dedicated to the Feast of the Dormition, which symbolized the continuity with the great Dormition Cathedral in the town of Vladimir. The latter started to lose its political significance.

✍️ The present-day cathedral was constructed in 1479 by decree of Great Prince of Russia Ivan III, who consolidated all Russian principalities under the power of Moscow. A renowned architect Aristotele Fioravanti of Bologna was invited to Russia to design and to build it.

🇷🇺 For 6 centuries, the cathedral has been the national and religious centre of Russia. It is known as the place of coronation of Russian rulers (even after the capital was moved to St. Petersburg), including the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II, as well as the investiture of leaders of the Russian Orthodox Church.

👩‍🏫👨‍🏫 #OTD September 5, is Teachers' Day in India.
The date was chosen for a reason: Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a prominent educationist and social activist who made a significant contribution to the development of education in India, was born on this day in 1888.

💐 The celebration has its own traditions: students wear ceremonial clothes, give flowers and homemade gifts to teachers, organise concerts and plays.

🎉 Congratulations to all Indian teachers !

✍️ #OTD, on September 9, 1828, Leo Tolstoy was born — one of the greatest writers in the history of world literature. Author of the novels "War and Peace", "Anna Karenina", "Resurrection" and many others, Tolstoy made an invaluable contribution to the development of Russian and world realism.

💭 Besides literary activity, Leo Tolstoy was known as a philosopher and social thinker. His humanistic ideas and moral quest had a profound influence on his contemporaries and subsequent generations. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature, although he himself later declined further nominations.

🇷🇺🇮🇳 In the last years of his life, Leo Tolstoy took an active interest in the East, particularly in India. He corresponded with many Indian figures, including young Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi called himself a faithful disciple of Tolstoy, noting the great influence of his works, especially the book "The Kingdom of God within You", on the formation of his worldview.

📆 #OTD, on September 11, 1935, German Titov — a legendary Soviet cosmonaut who became the second person in space — was born.

🚀 Titov made his flight on August 6-7, 1961, on the Vostok-2 spacecraft, spending more than a day in space. He became the youngest cosmonaut in history — at the time of his journey, he was only 25 years old. During his mission, Titov was the first in the world to manually control a spacecraft, filmed the Earth from space, and proved the possibility of sleeping and eating in zero gravity.

👩‍🚀 Later, working at the Cosmonaut Training Center and participating in various projects, he made a significant contribution to the development of the USSR space programmes.

🇷🇺 #OTD, on September 14, 1959, 65 years ago, the Soviet automatic interplanetary station "Luna-2" reached the surface of the Moon, becoming the first man-made object to touch another celestial body.

🌓 Launched on September 12 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, "Luna-2" made a journey that ended in the Sea of Rains region near the craters Aristillus, Archimedes and Autolycus.

🟣The "Luna-2" mission was the second most important event in the history of cosmonautics after the flight of Yuri Gagarin, demonstrating the advanced achievements of the Soviet space program. Major scientific achievement is the first direct measurement of the solar wind and confirmation of the Moon's lack of a significant magnetic field and radiation belt.

📆 #OTD, on September 16, 1915, for the first time in the history of navigation, Boris Vilkitsky (1885-1961), Russian hydrographer and explorer of the Arctic, made a through route from Vladivostok to Arkhangelsk.

🟣The expedition began in Vladivostok on July 7, 1914, on the icebreaking steamers “Vaygach” and “Taymyr”.

☝️ During the expedition extensive scientific research was carried out: winds, currents, ice condition, depths of the northern seas were studied. The coordinates of the points of the southern coast of the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago were determined and the strait between the Kara Sea and the Laptev Sea, named in Vilkitsky's honor, was discovered. This voyage was a milestone in the history of world navigation and Arctic exploration.
