🇪🇬 Ancient Egyptian 'Green Coffin' returned to Cairo by US

A looted ancient Egyptian sarcophagus that was on display at a US museum has been returned to Egypt.

The 2.9m (9.5ft) long "Green Coffin" dates back to the Late Dynastic Period, which spanned 664BC to 332BC, and belonged to a priest called Ankhenmaat.

It was looted from the Abu Sir necropolis in north Egypt by a global art trafficking network, which smuggled it through Germany into the US in 2008.

A collector loaned it to the Houston Museum of Natural Science in 2013.

The sarcophagus was repatriated after an investigation that lasted several years and was formally handed over by US diplomats at a ceremony in Cairo on Monday. The event was attended by Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Tourism and Antiquities Minister Ahmed Issa.

🇪🇬🇪🇹 Egypt accuses Ethiopia of "buying time" in Nile dam row

Egypt’s deputy foreign minister on African affairs has accused Ethiopia of “buying time” through negotiations while continuing to fill its disputed Nile dam without an agreement.

In a statement on Wednesday, the minister condemned statements by Ethiopia that had accused Cairo of “politicising” the Nile dam dispute.

Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt have been embroiled in a years-long dispute over the dam, which Sudan and Egypt fear would reduce their shares of water from the River Nile.

🇪🇬📃⁉️🇪🇬 Egypt Peace Summit ends without joint final declaration | Event took place this Saturday | October 22, 2023:

The Peace Summit for Gaza and the “Palestinian issue” organized by Egypt in the so-called New Administrative Capital, east of Cairo, ended this Saturday (21), without a final joint declaration from the 34 countries and international organizations that participated in the meeting.

Egypt, the country that called the meeting, issued a note in which it appreciates the effort to seek consensus, above political or religious positions, to address this crisis and the situation in Israel and Palestine, and the common position of “seeing the importance of reassessing the international strategy to address the conflict”.

Sources from the Spanish delegation positively assessed the meeting, despite the absence of a final declaration, as a very important step towards mobilizing the international community to reactivate the struggle for the coexistence of two states, Israel and Palestine, defended for years by both Spain and the Union European.

In this sense, the same sources pointed out that Spain will play an important role in this reactivation, both through its help in defining the EU's position on this issue and through its privileged position in the necessary Euro-Arab dialogue.

From the outset, the meeting, which took place in Egypt's New Administrative Capital, situated some 50 kilometers east of Cairo, was immediately evident in its support for the idea of reviving the “two-state” solution and coexistence in the conflict.

Everyone who spoke at the beginning of the meeting defended the same ideas: the coexistence of two states is the only viable solution to the conflict, civilian lives must be protected everywhere and humanitarian aid must be authorized in the Gaza Strip.

However, the difference in sensitivity between the Arab world and the West regarding the assessment of the situation of the Palestinians and the responsibilities for their situation was also notable.

Arab sources informed EFE that the final declaration did not materialize, despite agreement on many issues, due to Europe's refusal to hold Israel responsible for the deaths of civilians and to demand a ceasefire.

In the closing statement, Egypt and its president Abdel Fatah al Sisi stated that the initiative sought to “establish a global consensus” to reject “violence, terrorism” and call for an end to the ongoing war that has caused the deaths of “thousands of innocent civilians in both Palestine and Israel.”
It also called for respect for the rules of international and humanitarian law “which underline the vital importance of protecting civilians and not exposing them to danger or threats.”

🇪🇬🇸🇴 Egypt sends arms to Somalia following security pact

Egypt delivered its first military aid to Somalia in more than four decades on Tuesday, three diplomatic and Somali government sources said, a move likely to deepen strains between the two countries and Ethiopia.

Egypt and Somalia have drawn closer together this year after Ethiopia signed a preliminary deal with the breakaway region of Somaliland to lease coastal land in exchange for possible recognition of its independence from Somalia.

The Mogadishu government has called the deal an assault on its sovereignty and said it will block it by all means necessary.

Egypt, at odds with Ethiopia for years over Addis Ababa's construction of a vast hydro dam on the headwaters of the Nile River, has condemned the Somaliland deal. It signed a security pact with Mogadishu earlier this month and has offered to send troops to a new peacekeeping mission in Somalia.

🇪🇬🇹🇷 Egypt's president in Turkey as relations between two countries thaw

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi began an official visit to Turkey Wednesday for meetings with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

It is the first official visit to Turkey by an Egyptian president in 12 years and comes amid a warming of relations between the two regional powers. In February, Erdogan made his first visit to Egypt in more than a decade after the two countries agreed to mend ties and reappointed ambassadors.

Ties between Cairo and Ankara collapsed in 2013 after el-Sisi, who was then army chief, led the ouster of democratically elected Islamist President Mohamed Morsi amid mass protests against his divisive first year in power. Morsi was a top figure in the Muslim Brotherhood organisation which has long been backed by Turkey.

In this second summit between el-Sisi and Erdogan since they began mending relations, they will reportedly sign around 20 agreements.

🇪🇬 Egypt reiterates rejection of Israeli presence in Philadelphi corridor: FM Abdelatty at Madrid meeting

Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty reiterated Friday his country's firm rejection of any Israeli military presence in the Philadelphi corridor (aka Salah El-Din axis) and the Palestinian side of the Rafah border crossing.

This came during the ministerial meeting on the Palestinian cause and the implementation of the two-state solution held in Madrid, according to a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry.

During the meeting, Abdelatty criticized the reduced rate of humanitarian aid entering Gaza, especially as Israel uses starvation as a weapon against the Palestinians and refuses to open its crossings.

The Egyptian FM also emphasized that Israel's military presence in these areas serves political purposes, that is, preventing the legitimate Palestinian authority from regaining control in Gaza and disrupting mediation efforts conducted by Egypt, Qatar, and the US to reach a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange deal.
