🇨🇦🇮🇳Hundreds of Indian students in Canada face deportation, protest against new rule

Hundreds of Indian students are facing deportation after Prince Edward Island changed its provincial immigration rules. Around 300 students are protesting and have threatened to go on a hunger strike if the province doesn't review its latest immigration policy.

They forget that studying in Canada as a foreign student is a privilege, not a right.

🇮🇳 India’s Oil Majors Penalized Again for Non-Compliance with Board Composition Rules

For the fifth consecutive time, India’s leading oil companies, including Indian Oil, BPCL, and GAIL, have been penalized by the BSE and NSE for failing to meet board composition requirements.

According to listing regulations, these companies were expected to appoint a specified number of independent directors and women to their boards by the April-June 2024 deadline. However, the companies have contended that director appointments fall under the government's jurisdiction, leaving them with limited control over the process.

In response, the companies have appealed to the stock exchanges, requesting a waiver of the imposed penalties. Indian Oil, BPCL, GAIL, Oil India, and MRPL have all faced similar fines in previous quarters for non-compliance with these governance norms.

The persistent imposition of fines is pressuring these companies to align their governance structures with regulatory demands. The management is grappling with a tough decision: either diminish their control over the business by complying with board composition rules or continue to bear the financial penalties. So far, the companies have opted to absorb the financial costs, but this approach is likely to increase regulatory pressure on them in the future.

🇮🇳 India Emerges as the World's Leading LNG Buyer

In June 2024, India imported 2.612 million tons of LNG, marking a 45% increase from the 1.796 million tons imported in June 2023, according to the country's Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

This figure represents one of the highest levels in the national trade statistics. The historical peak occurred in February 2020, with 2.672 million tons, driven by an unusual surplus of LNG in the market and a sharp decline in global prices during the pandemic.

India also imported a similar volume of LNG in May 2024, totaling 2.654 million tons.

The surge in imports was largely due to unusually hot weather in the region. May and June saw temperatures significantly exceed the seasonal norm. However, by July, temperatures in the country began to normalize.

As a result, India was the most active LNG buyer in the region in June, outpacing South Korea's more moderate increase in activity (+17%) and China's stable purchases (+1%). In contrast, Europe reduced its LNG imports by one-third.

The United States became the largest LNG supplier to India in June, accounting for 29% of all deliveries and increasing shipments 3.5 times to 752,000 tons. Qatar was the second-largest supplier, contributing a quarter of the supplies (403,000 tons).
