In 2018, I landed my first job in #gamedev in Warsaw. I sent out about 50 emails to various companies, but only one called me for an interview. Interestingly, this company wasn't even advertising for an artist position on their website.

I had heard that it's worthwhile to send applications even if there's no listed opening for your role, so I gave it a shot—and it worked! I secured my first job as a concept artist for VR projects. Although I only stayed for a year before moving into freelance work, the experience was incredibly cool and fun.

Finding a job in this industry can be tough, especially now, but perhaps reaching out to companies even when they aren’t actively hiring for your position can still be a viable strategy.

I’ve been hanging out with my friend Anton, a senior concept artist & illustrator at CD Projekt RED, and got the idea to do a little Q&A about his job for my channel. Hopefully, it will be useful for someone out there 🖼

What advice would you give to yourself at the start of your career?
1. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you’re stuck.
2. Don’t underestimate the importance of rest—it’s essential for both work and progress.
3. Striving for absolute realism isn’t always necessary; develop the skill of tasteful exaggeration.
4. Don’t get too attached to your work—it may be revised or discarded, and that’s often beyond your control.
5. Soft skills can sometimes advance your career more than hard skills. For example, a well-pitched design is often more valued than an interesting concept you can’t present effectively.


What are some ways to optimize your workflow?
1. Create a personal reference library, organized into folders with a system that suits your search needs.
2. Utilize tools like Bridge Unreal for free assets and Blender add-ons such as Hard Ops.
3. Use Photoshop actions, shortcuts, and hotkeys to save time.
4. ShotDeck for finding references.
5. ChatGPT to streamline research—summarizing articles, extracting key points, and finding historical or character design references.


How creatively free do you feel in your work?
I’d rate my creative freedom at 8 out of 10, but it depends on the task. Sometimes there are strict guidelines, while other times I have complete freedom within a given theme.

настало время нового закреплённого поста, так как к каналу присоединились новые люди, спасибо!

меня зовут Женя, я рисую с раннего детства, компьютерной графикой занимаюсь с 2011 года (полный лор). примерно с 2020 мои картинки начали активно расходиться по интернету и стали узнаваемы из-за монументальности и довольно высокого для пиксель арта разрешения. на этом канале я делюсь своими работами, всякими полезностями, а также анонсами стримов.

на данный момент моя основная работа — работа в геймдеве. возможно, вы видели мои сцены в Индике, я также рисовала спрайты для Between Horizons и Sticky Business DLCs. сейчас работаю над REPLACED, двумя ещё не анонсированными проектами и своей игрой Unburied.
