🇷🇺🇮🇳 President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of the Republic of India Narendra Modi held talks on the sidelines of the XVI BRICS Summit (October 22, 2024):
💬 President Vladimir Putin: Mr Prime Minister, friends,
I am delighted to welcome you to Russia, this time to Kazan, a magnificent historical city on the Volga.
I warmly remember your visit to Moscow and our fruitful talks back in July. We regularly speak on the telephone. I am grateful that you accepted our invitation and came to the #BRICS Summit in Kazan in person.
Today we will take part in the opening ceremony of the summit. Later, there will be a dinner for the leaders, and then we will begin our work.
Here in Kazan, we are to make a number of important decisions to enhance the efficiency of efforts made by BRICS and to strengthen multilateral cooperation within the group. We value our cooperation on this track, considering that our nations were instrumental in founding BRICS.
🤝 Russian-Indian relations are characterised by a special privileged strategic partnership and continue to develop actively. Interaction between legislative bodies is strengthening, and our foreign ministers are in constant contact.
📈 Trade is also in good shape. The next meeting of the intergovernmental commission is scheduled for November 12 in New Delhi.
Large projects are consistently developing, and we welcome your decision to open a Consulate General of India in Kazan. Expanding India’s diplomatic presence in Russia will contribute to the further development of bilateral relations.
Mr Prime Minister, we are very glad to see you and your entire representative team in Russia.

🇷🇺🇮🇳 April 13 marks 78 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between our country and India.
India is a long-standing and reliable partner of Russia.
Our bilateral relations are characterized by a particularly privileged strategic partnership and continue to develop dynamically. They are characterized by a high level of mutual trust, respect for national interests, coincidence or proximity of positions on key aspects of global and regional policy.
🤝 A characteristic feature of Russian-Indian relations is also the high intensity of political interaction. Every year, meetings and negotiations are held at the highest and high levels, key areas of cooperation are discussed, as well as current international and regional issues.
In 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi twice: in July in Moscow during Modi's state visit to Russia, which was also his first foreign trip after being reappointed as Prime Minister following his election to parliament, and in October in Kazan on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.
A regular dialogue is maintained at the level of heads of foreign policy departments. Over the past year alone, Sergey Lavrov and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar held five bilateral meetings on the sidelines of major international forums and events (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).
📈 Trade and economic cooperation is steadily developing. In 2024, Russia entered the top four largest trading partners of India. Mutual trade turnover increased by 12% and reached a record volume of over $60 billion. Following the July 2024 summit, a goal was set to increase this figure to $100 billion by 2030.
⚛️ Nuclear energy remains one of the key areas of cooperation between Russia and India. The flagship in this area is the Kudankulam NPP in southern India. Russia remains the only country that is implementing the construction of a nuclear power plant on the territory of the Republic and which has achieved practical results in cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Large-scale Russian-Indian projects are successfully implemented in the military-technical, agricultural, cultural and humanitarian spheres, in the field of high technology and space research.
🌐 Moscow and New Delhi are committed to the formation of a polycentric world order based on the principles of sovereign equality, compliance with the norms and principles of international law, advocate for the democratization of international relations, an increased role of the Global South in economic governance mechanisms, respect for the cultural and civilizational identity of all peoples of the world, their right to independently determine their own development paths.
Our countries work to ensure stability, global and regional security, closely interact within the framework of BRICS and the SCO. Russia consistently supports India's candidacy for permanent membership in the UN Security Council.
🎉 Congratulations to our Indian friends on our common holiday! We express confidence in the further dynamic and progressive development of friendly relations and the expansion of Russian-Indian ties.
