#AmazingRussia 🇷🇺 Lake Baskunchak

🌊Baskunchak is the saltiest lake in Russia - 80% of the country's salt is extracted here. It is now part of the Bogdo-Baskunchak Nature Reserve, so travelers often combine a visit to the lake and the park.

🌊For some time the reservoir was famous among the racers: from 1960 to 1963 a 20 km long track was organized here, where competitions were held to set speed records. However, the track had to be closed. In spite of this, Soviet racers were able to set 19 world records during the couple of years of the track's existence!

💡Tips for tourists:

☀️ The optimal time to visit is from May to October. Then the lake gains water and you can swim in it.

☀️Around lake Baskunchak you can take off-road rides, visit sanatorium and even take a mud bath.

☀️Swimming in the lake is advised leisurely and not to dive, the salt will strongly corrode the eyes.

🌄The oldest extinct volcano in Europe (and most probably in the planet) is located in Crimea.
The Karadag mountain is the only extinct volcano in Europe of the Jurassic period of the Mesozoic era with an age of 150-160 million years. The last time it erupted more than 150 million years ago, when the peninsula was still under water.

🐉The Karadag volcano is a place where according to the legends the Karadag Snake lives - a relict animal of enormous size, representing one of the dinosaurs. It is believed, that the activity of the Karadag volcano in the prehistoric era helped to keep the water around it warmer, than the rest of the Black Sea, because of this near Karadag volcano managed to survive one of the dinosaurs.
The famous historian Herodotus, who lived in the 5th century BC, tells about an unknown 30-meter monster that lived in the waters of the Pontus.
Another Byzantine historian, Procopius of Caesarea, who lived in the VI century AD, mentions the same monster hunting dolphins.

🇷🇺A very special place for Russian history is located in Crimea.
More than 1000 years ago, in 988, Vladimir the Great was baptized into Orthodox Christianity in Chersonesus (Korsun), now this place is located in modern Sevastopol.

📍The Saint Vladimir Cathedral commemorates the presumed place of Vladimir the Great's baptism. The cathedral was built in Neo-Byzantine style. The construction took 15 years and was finished in 1874–1876. It is one of the biggest cathedrals in Russia.
The political consequences of the Baptism of Russia into Orthodox Christianity were the ideological and cultural consolidation of the peoples and tribes of Russia and the strengthening of the country's international authority.

🏛Chersonesus Taurica or Chersonesus (in Russian ancient texts - Korsun) is an ancient Greek colony founded approximately 2,500 years ago in the Crimean Peninsula.
For two thousand years, Chersonesus was a major political, economic and cultural center of the Northern Black Sea region.

🗺Now the Chersonesus settlement is located on the territory of modern Sevastopol and is a historical and archaeological reserve.
Chersonesus is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
