How did Moscow welcome foreigners at the 1980 Olympics?

The 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow captured the attention of the whole world. Let's turn on the "nostalgia" mode and remember how it was.
In 1974, the Soviet Union received the right to host the 1980 Summer Olympics. For the first time, the games were to be held in Eastern Europe. By 1980, almost 80 facilities had been built in the cities hosting the competition. In Moscow alone, there were 20 new sports facilities, including a cycle track in Krylatskoe, an equestrian and sports complex in Bitza and the ‘Olympic’ sports complex. And the main stadium became the ‘Lenin’ Central Stadium (now Luzhniki).

The organizers tried to take into account every detail, even the date of the opening of the Games were chosen very carefully. Specialists of the All-Union Research Institute of Hydrometeorological Information studied the observations of Moscow weather for a hundred years and chose the most favorable date for the opening ceremony - July 19. Historically, there had been no recordings of heavy rains or stifling heat on that day.

During the Olympics, not only Russian speech was heard in the subway: station announcements were duplicated in English. Expecting a large influx of guests, the subway even sped up the escalators. And, on the subway map, it was possible to create a route from one Olympic venue to another: all of them were specially marked.

The Summer Games inspired not only athletes and fans, but also artists. Soviet and foreign artists created a whole gallery of Olympic images. For example, the poster ‘Welcome!’ contains the main buildings of the Soviet capital - the Kremlin towers, Moscow State University, the House of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance on Novy Arbat (the famous book-shaped house) and the Luzhniki stadium. While the main symbol of the Moscow Games - the ‘Mishka’ the Olympic Bear mascot - won the hearts of fans all over the world.

This year is exactly 50 years since the 1980 Olympics were authorized. 1974 was a landmark year for Russia and Eastern Europe, which allowed the Olympics to be held in this region for the first time!

Did you know that the Russian "Birch" has traveled to almost all continents? It has conquered the stages of Japan, France, Argentina, Switzerland, Korea and the USA. The dancers performed in the most extreme conditions: for example, in Greece they danced "Maslenitsa" in sheepskin coats, hats and felt boots in the heat of 40 degrees Celsius!

Russian House congratulates teachers, students, schoolchildren and their parents on Knowledge Day! 🍁📚

Under Peter I, the New Year was moved to January 1, but the tradition of starting classes on the first day of autumn remained. It was by this time that field work ended, and children had free time that should not be wasted.

In Russia, as a national holiday, "September 1" has been officially celebrated since 1984. This year, the festive assemblies will be held on September 2, the first working day of September. But today we have collected paintings and engravings dedicated to this day in the carousel. Using the site https://arthive.com/ru/about, you can also find works of art dedicated to any topic you choose!

Yesterday was the World War II End Day. The date refers to the period, when in August 1945 the Soviet Union officially joined the Potsdam Declaration and assisted the Allies in the liberation of the countries occupied by Japan. As a result, the last hotbed of World War II was eliminated.
We remembered all those who gave their lives for the return of peace.

The former royal residence is a place where you can see both historical buildings and a farm with animals. Today we are going to tell you about Gatchina! 🏰

The royal residence became a city in the late XVIII century, when its owner was Emperor Paul I. He was actively engaged in the rebuilding and arrangement of the territory. The residence was not just a place of rest and hunting for the emperor, but also the center of political life.

We advise you to start your acquaintance with the Gatchina (https://gatchinapalace.ru/gatchina/) and Priory (https://gatchinapalace.ru/dvorec/) palaces. The second one is the only earthen building preserved in Russia.

If you’re planning a trip with children, they’ll love the Palace Farm! (https://gatchinapalace.ru/park/farm/) It is home for a variety of animals, from Yakutian huskies to white peacocks.
