Novodevichy Convent (New Maiden): where does this name come from and why is it a maiden one? There are three versions of origin:

1️⃣ Historically, the first stone of the monastery was laid on the site where the so-called Maiden's Field was located. It was here that the most beautiful Moscow girls were chosen and sent as a tribute to the Golden Horde.

The location for the monastery was the best at the time of construction, as it was located behind the Moscow River, far from the Kremlin, and the bridge across the river was clearly visible, this direction was easy to control from the enemy.

2️⃣ The first abbess of the monastery had the surname Devochkina, in honor of her the temple got its name.

3️⃣ The monastery was intended specifically for girls, from here it became "Maiden", and the new one - distinguished it from another convent located right in the Kremlin.
