And this is a problem not only for the intelligence services of Western countries, but primarily for the worldview and understanding of Russians, who, for some unknown reason, have ceased to be considered imperialists and have instead been equated with those who value democracy, freedom of speech, etc. For some reason, the Western world stubbornly wanted the crocodile to be a fluffy kitten, and fuck if it was green and toothy, it's a toothy breed, it's a cat and it doesn't fuck.

In the end, the crocodile turned out to be no cat at all, and grew up with bigger appetites:

First, it wanted to devour Ukraine, but choked on it in 2004.

It was only at the end of 2023-2024 that most people realised that it was a crocodile, not a green breed of cat from Russia.

At least, I want to believe that it did. Because if it doesn't, then everything is really bad and no one and nothing will save this planet

And I'm not talking about the anti-vaccination movements in all democratic countries, which aimed not only to weaken trust in state institutions, but also to recruit agents for the Russian special services, who hated any government in the EU and in the world not only for money, but also because they were really sincere, because of insults from the authorities, etc.

How many investigations have been conducted into anti-vaccination movements in the EU? Who has been imprisoned because of their ties to Moscow, the Russian special services, and provoking people to take to the streets during the pandemic? The correct answer is zero.

Therefore, I see nothing surprising that the dominance of the Russian agent network increased exponentially during the Covid - anti-vaccinationists were ideal candidates for recruitment, just like they are described in the books of the special services, and it was a sin not to take advantage of this

In a few years, this environment will turn a person into a pro-Kremlin activist who will be 150% sure that he came to everything on his own, and not someone who has been putting all this Moscow shit in his head for years

This technology has always worked, is working and will work even in 100 years.

But in order to see that this is really happening, you need to recognise that that long green thing with teeth is a crocodile, not a rare breed of green cat.

Преамбула. Незважаючи на всі слова, які вже озвучені і Трампом, і деякими людьми з його адміністрації, моя особиста думка - ніякої зради поки шо немає. Бо є слова і є дії: поки іде озброєння та гроші, я не маю бажання гвалтувати свою власну нервову систему (хай пиздять шо завгодно, аби було чим пиздити йобнутих). А там побачимо

Але стаття не про Трампа, не про Ілону, яка б вже сьогодні поїхала в москву, якби це не мало наслідків, а трохи про інше - про те, що пропаганда всюди діє однаково.

Про те, що не обовʼязково захоплювати країну та ставити на її чолі умовного орбана чи Януковича, якого потім, за допомогою компромату, можна використовувати у власних інтересах скільки завгодно. Мова про те, що технології впливу змінились - премʼєр чи президент країни не обовʼязково має бути проросійським:

достатньо лише шоб його оточення було таким, воно і сформує його світогляд.

Ця технологія працює. Можна називати її хоч операцією активного впливу, хоч глибокою розробкою обʼєкта, хоч психологічною обробкою (brainwashing), але результат завжди один - той, проти кого вищезгадані заходи проводяться, ніколи не дізнається шо саме його друг чи радник впровадив, змінив його світогляд.

А якщо і дізнається, то буде всё заперечувати - він ж не такий, як ті, на кого це подіяло, а людина, що вміє мислити самостійно, він би помітив шо йому намагаються в голову шось занести і т д

Але по факту маємо те шо маємо. Європа знову проспала і тепер, окрім орбана та фіцо + вучіча в ЄС на одного проросійського президента більше - в Хорватії переміг ставленик москви. Америка ж натомість проспала операцію впливу щодо Трампа та його оточення.

З поганого - чарівної таблетки, кнопки, натиснувши яку можна все швидко змінити, не існує - подібні явища лікуються ще довше, ніж впроваджуються ворогами.

Проте це зовсім не значить шо нічого змінити не можна. Можна. Якшо визнати власні помилки і зробити з них правильні висновки + зробити все, шоб в майбутньому подібного більше не сталося. Можна почати хоча б розглянути можливість подивитися під іншим кутом на тих, хто пропонує не перший рік нормалізувати стосунки з москвою без зміни політичного курсу рф, а сам живе там, де одні геї навкруги і матрьошок нема, в США чи ЄС

Але… але це втручання у внутрішні справи незалежних країн, в яких є власні служби безпеки, контррозвідка та інші спецслужби, що як раз цим і мають займатися. Хто я такий шоб вчити їх, як їм виконувати їх роботу?

Нічого не змінилося з часів холодної війни. Просто хтось погано вивчив уроки. Технології впливу фактично ті самі шо і в 60-70-х роках, змінився лише час розповсюдження інформації,,можливість доступу до інформації + зʼявилися соцмережі. Все інше залишилось без змін - є хрестоматійні прийоми, які працюють і працюватимуть через 100 років.

Тому, як тільки чуєте шось пацифістське, коли іде мова про москву, чи людина позиціонує себе як журналіст чи активіст з «альтернативною» думкою, то сумніви мають бути лише в тому, де недогледіли, прогледіли звʼязок зі спецслужбами рф. Такі реалії на сьогодні.

Хто їх не хоче сприймати, отримає у вищих ешелонах влади своєї країни прокремлівського персонажа, що буде говорити або як путін, або як російське телебачення, використовуючи ті самі наративи та фейкові дані щодо ситуації в світі

І це все сталося не вчора. Не в 2022 році і навіть не в 2014-му. Це триває з моменту отруєння Ющенка в 2004 році і почалося по факту одразу після приходи до влади путіна, бо результати операцій впливу тривають в середньому мінімум 4-5 років.

Агенти впливу в ЄС та США не взялися нізвідки - в них було достатньо часу шоб і обзавестися потрібними звʼязками, і створити агентурні мережі, і здобути для себе бездоганну репутацію серед владних структур Європи та Америки, і сформувати світогляди тих, хто зараз або вже на керуючих посадах, або скоро будуть чи просто мають шанси прийти до влади

І це проблема не лише спецслужб західних держав, а насамперед світогляду та розуміння росіян, яких, за незрозумілих обставин, чомусь перестали вважати імперцями, і натомість прирівняли до тих, хто цінують демократію, свободу слова і т д. У підсумку крокодил виявився ні разу не котом, виріс і його апетити збільшилися:

Принаймі, хочеться вірити шо дійшло. Бо якшо не дійшло, то тоді все реально погано і цю планету вже ніхто і ніщо врятує

І це я мовчу про антивакцинаторські рухи по всім демократичним країнам, метою яких було не лише послабити довіру до державних інституцій, а й набір агентури для спецслужб рф, які ненавиділи будь-яку владу в ЄС та в світі не лише за гроші - вони реально щиро це робили, через образи зі сторони влади і т д

Скільки розслідувань відбулося щодо антивакцинаторських рухів в ЄС? Кого конкретно кинули до вʼязниці через звʼязки з москвою, зі спецслужбами рф, та провокуванням людей виходити на вулиці під час пандемії? Правильна відповідь - нуль .

Тому не бачу нічого дивного шо засилля російської агентурної мережі збільшилися в геометричній прогресії саме під час ковіду - антивакцинатори являли собою ідеальних претендентів для вербування, тупо таких, про яких пишуть в книжках спецслужб, і цим було гріх не скористатися

Через декілька років це оточення зробить з людини прокацапського активіста, який буде на 150% впевнений шо він сам до всього прийшов, а не хтось йому це все московське гівно вкладав в голову роками

Ця технологія завжди працювала, працює і працюватиме навіть через 100 років.

Ilona and the bears. Longread on utopia

I read a rather interesting article in ElPais about the behaviour of Ilona's friend. I quote the article in full:

"Elon Musk is bear bait.
The millionaire is implementing the same plan in the government that he implemented in X, as if it worked well."

"Grafton is a small town in New Hampshire, in the northeastern United States, with a population of about 1,400. Since 2004, it has been the subject of a political experiment to transform the municipality into an anarcho-capitalist paradise. The initiators hoped that the whole country would understand that taxes are theft, that government intervention leads to poverty, and that it is better to leave everything to private initiative.

Musk has spent several weeks eliminating everything he considers unnecessary, such as aid to poor countries, funding for medical and scientific research, support for military veterans... But without (so far) touching the government contracts of Musk's companies. As the Fortune magazine headline shared on BlueSky by journalist Michael J. Stern summed it up: "Some public officials are enriching themselves at taxpayers' expense, says Elon Musk, whose companies have received at least $20 billion from the government."

The plan is similar to the one he implemented at Twitter: after buying the social network, he laid off 80% of its employees. But there are at least two problems with this: first, the best thing that can be said about X is that it still works (and that's a lot). But even if we ignore the problems of harassment and bias, the operation has not been a success story. According to the fund manager Fidelity, since 2022, X has lost 70% of its value.

It may have paid off for Musk, given where he is now - in the White House, but from a business perspective, the purchase was a disaster. It's as if I fell on the street, broke my nose and found a 200-euro note on the ground. I may have done well, but I can't say that the best way to make money is to break your nose.

The second problem is that Musk behaves as if he is creating a techno-anarcho-capitalist utopia, a drugged-up, chainsaw-wielding Grafton in which the decisions of the leaders are more important than democracy. And this, apart from ethical conflicts and possible illegality, is not a good idea. In his book The Open Society and Its Enemies, Karl Popper reminds us that the danger of utopias is not that their goal is unrealisable (for example, democracy seemed impossible a few centuries ago), but that they propose a complete reconstruction of society. This has "practical implications that are difficult to calculate, given our limited experience".

This is exactly what happened in Grafton. None of the supporters of this libertarian initiative thought that the elimination of public services would attract bears. But social problems - like X problems - are very complex, much more complex than designing a reusable rocket or an electric car. This is not about abandoning big ideas: Popper suggests that we should make progress little by little. This allows us to test the consequences of our decisions and correct them if necessary.

In addition, a company and a country are not the same thing. The public sector should not throw money down the drain, but it can afford to support ideas that we do not yet know whether they will be successful or stupid. Silicon Valley entrepreneurs don't often mention the origins of the Internet, which is in the public domain: it started as a project of the US Department of Defence and a few universities. As technology and design researcher Casey Klimes ironically writes in his book X, if DOGE had existed in 1969, Elon Musk would have killed the initiative: "We're spending a million taxpayer dollars so that professors can text each other?"

"This is the story of how a group of dreamers killed a city that had existed for two and a half centuries in a little more than fifteen years. And, of course, it's about bears.

Tracy Colburn came home from work that evening tired. She decided that before she collapsed and fell asleep without a care in the world, she needed to feed her dog. So she started to heat up a meat stew. When the dog asked to go outside, she decided to let him out. But when she opened the door, she found three bears on her small porch. Before Tracy could do anything, her dog Kai ran out onto the porch and immediately attacked the largest animal. A fight ensued, and the bear and dog rolled down the stairs. The wild animal tried to paw at Kai, but he deftly dodged and bit him on the backside.

The woman knew that bears are usually afraid of loud shouting, so she screamed with all her might. In a normal situation, this might have helped, but the bear had no alternative: it had a biting dog behind it and Tracy in front of it. The animal lunged at her. Tracy raised her arms to defend herself, and the bear crushed one of her arms with one powerful clawed paw and badly scratched her side. The woman fell towards the door, and it slammed shut behind her, leaving her face to face with the furious predator.

Then everything happened like in slow motion, but finally, the bear ran away into the forest, chased by the dog. Kai returned, tail wagging happily, proud of his feat. Tracy's mood was far from happy. She had lost a lot of blood and definitely could not wait until morning.

One of the distinctive features of the town of Grafton, where these events took place, was that there was no mobile phone service. Therefore, the woman could only crawl to her car and get behind the wheel. She was unable to drive away because the car was equipped with a manual transmission, and her right arm was torn to pieces. The only thing left to do was to press the horn with her left hand, hoping that someone walking or driving by would notice her.

The history of Grafton and New Hampshire's black bear population go hand in hand. When the first colonists came here at the end of the 18th century, the animals were quite enthusiastic about it. They watched with interest as the white monkeys roasted pieces of beef over the fire, and when they were particularly hungry, they did not mind eating both the beef and the white monkeys themselves. Animals did this more than once, and people responded with violence, but neither side won.

The British crown did not care about Grafton and the bears, but it did care about the taxes that the town's residents had to pay to the treasury. That is why the colonists greeted the revolution with enthusiasm, not expecting, of course, that the new government would deprive them of bears, but believing that they would not have to pay taxes.

Their expectations were not met, and the outraged residents of Grafton began to write petitions to the federal authorities, which boiled down to two theses: "we don't want to pay taxes because it is very difficult for us to live" and "we will not pay taxes". And they did not. Moreover, in 1781, the then-independent state of Vermont invited them under its wing, promising not to stutter about taxation. The townspeople gladly voted to secede from New Hampshire.

George Washington, who had heard the news of what was happening, put an end to this issue. He declared that he would "suspend the struggle against the common enemy [the British Empire]" and return all his forces to "raze this state to the ground". Grafton had to back down, but the desire to avoid paying taxes has remained a feature of Graftonians throughout history.

The neighbouring town of Canaan was in almost the same situation as Grafton. It's not that Kanaan is a tax-loving town, but the citizens and local authorities made their choice one way or another.

They decided that public infrastructure was a necessary thing and spent money from the city budget to create it. Grafton did the opposite. In the "fat" year of 1881, the city assembly voted to completely abolish the payment of taxes by residents.

However, for some reason, things did not go the way they had envisaged. Until the 1930s, the town had neither firefighters nor a fire station, despite the fact that Grafton residents regularly died in fires. There was also no police station, and law enforcement officers had to conduct interrogations in their homes. And it is worth noting that all of this was not possible precisely because of the will of the people of Grafton, who voted with enviable persistence against any expenditures from the municipal budget. The lack of infrastructure did not attract new residents from outside either.

By 2010, it turned out that the municipal tax in the two settlements did not differ much: the owner of a house worth $150,000 paid $930 a year in Kanaan and $673 in Grafton. Indeed, despite the significantly higher costs of public infrastructure, the population of Kanaan was larger than that of Grafton and had an elementary school, several churches, restaurants, banks, a gift shop, two bakeries, etc.

Utopia and "battles of the homeless"

But in the early 2000s, there were people who liked the Graftonians' approach. These were four new settlers: John Babiarz, Tim Condon, Larry Pendarvis and Bob Gall. All of them were adherents of the libertarian ideology described by Ayn Rand in her novel Atlas Shrugged. They all dreamed of a society in which there were virtually no regulations and taxes, everything was governed by the "invisible hand of the market", and individual motivations were always higher than social ones. This is the kind of society they were going to build in Grafton, which they chose for obvious reasons. This was the beginning of the Free City project.

If everything went as planned, hundreds of like-minded people would rush to the settlement, who, by joining forces through democratic elections, would be able to abolish a bunch of stupid and unnecessary regulations that enslave ordinary people (this is how Pendarvis described the initiative on one of the libertarian forums on the Internet).Among the inalienable rights, the activist listed the possibility of having more than two broken-down cars on his private property, the right to gamble, the right of students to skip school, the right to transport drugs and engage in incest. The libertarian also demanded to allow the transport of human organs, duels and, finally, "battles of the homeless" - when two citizens could give money to homeless people to fight each other. And, of course, cannibalism.

Initially, the locals took the newcomers positively - they shared a common way of thinking: both disliked taxes. However, it soon became clear that the Grafton residents did not like the vigorous activity of the Libertarian Party, and wild statements about cannibalism, duels and fights among the homeless turned them away from the newcomers even more. The founders of the Free City project did not lose heart after receiving a harsh rebuff from the townspeople. They just decided that only their opponents came to the meetings where they tried to push their ideology. But, probably, the majority of people who support their initiative are just sitting at home and waiting for things to get better.

It was decided to stay in Grafton rather than look for a better place for the project. Thus, a pilgrimage of libertarians began to come to the city, inspired by the call that the four founders of the initiative left online. Some of them came with money and families, ready to buy a house and settle down. But for some reason, most of them turned out to be single men with no money in their pockets. They settled on the outskirts of the city, in trailer parks, tents and cabins of their motorhomes.

Among them, however, were not only libertarians - there were also preppers (people preparing to survive the apocalypse), communist anarchists, and God knows who else.

All this motley crew was united by a love of absolute freedom and a hatred of the state. The struggle against regulation in Grafton was a fierce one, although it would seem that it could have gone much further. The libertarians demanded that their right to pollute their property as they pleased, to build fires in a fire hazard zone - again, if it was their property - and generally to do whatever they wanted to do, be recognised. In addition, many of them are used to carrying weapons in public, making the locals nervous. This is not to say that anyone in the city could be surprised by a pistol, rifle or even a machine gun. However, the unspoken code of the Graftonians did not allow flaunting them. Weapons were intended for utilitarian purposes. If a bear came, a person needed to have something with which to respond to the animal if it behaved aggressively

Libertarians sued for any reason - and there were plenty of reasons. They believed that everything was going more or less well, and that they just needed to achieve even more freedom, which required getting rid of the last regulations. But there were also people among them who tried to reason with the most extreme individuals.

One of them was John Babiarz. In the early years, when there was no one to maintain the town's only fire engine, he became a Grafton firefighter. Moreover, he once responded to a call from one of his colleagues and poured water on a fire that he was burning in the wrong place, despite the dry weather. This was unheard of, and the anarcho-capitalist community began to burst at the seams.

While the lovers of freedom tried to mould Grafton into their own utopia, the bears realised that the people's dreams had indeed come true - only for them, not for the people. At first, the new settlers did not notice them, but gradually the bears' presence became more and more noticeable. They started digging through garbage cans and the trailer park's dumpster, plundering beehives and licking the fat off grills in the backyards of houses. They also fell in love with cats - not to pet, but to eat.

At that time, there was a drought, which, by the way, affected the bears as well. Food became scarce, and therefore, the animals began to look for it even more carefully from people. One libertarian woman who fed birds with sunflower seeds discovered that bears were ravaging the feeders. One day, she saw a bear in her yard - it was very thin and emaciated.

So the woman, who many later came to know as the Donut Lady, began to take out another bucket of grain for these animals. But the animals were very quick to eat it, and so soon she began to put out two, three, four buckets. The animals were hungry, and the Donut Lady could not refuse them. She would add several dozen cheap donuts to the buckets of grain, which earned her the nickname. No wonder the bears began to spend days and nights near the feeders.

Other libertarians also deliberately fed bears. When the US Fish and Wildlife Service fined a man named Charlie Vanderhoe $20,000 for feeding bears, libertarians were outraged.

"They don't think about protecting animals, they only exist to fine people who love animals," one of them said at the time.The first thing that came to the minds of the preppers and other residents of the tent city was to put up a poster saying "No Bears Allowed" near the bin where they dumped their rubbish. It was unlikely that the bears could read, but what the hell. Nevertheless, the poster helped to raise the spirit in the camp. Many "survivalists" stocked up on large-calibre pistols and, looking at the inscription, convinced themselves that it was not they who were on bear territory, but the bears on their land.

Shooting in the forest

Tracy Colburn became the first bear attack victim in Grafton in a hundred years.

The Donut Lady and other libertarians continued to feed the bears, and something definitely needed to be done about the population. A few hunters got together and conducted an illegal raid on the dens. But it didn't help for long.

The bears soon returned, but the number of libertarians dropped dramatically. Tracy Colburn, who was rescued by John Babiarz, who was passing by when he heard her pressing the signal with her healthy hand, left town as soon as her wounds healed. Others followed her. Not all of them have survived to this day. Some were shot and killed in a dispute, others burned down in their homes before the firemen from Kanaan could arrive, and Bob Gall, one of the first settlers, died of cancer.

A sad fate also befell the eccentric libertarian pastor John Connell, who bought a church from the Methodists for a pittance. All of this played a role, but the death of the Free City project was even more influenced by the new Free State project. If Grafton used to attract everyone who wanted to feel like a shoulder-shrugging Atlantan, now, thanks to other libertarian activists, it has become the entire state of New Hampshire.

One of the new places of attraction for libertarians was the town of Keene, where the municipal property tax was three times higher than in Grafton, but it had a baseball team, tennis, baseball and playgrounds, a historic colonial theatre, mowed lawns and trees in parks, and a neighbourhood with entertainment and educational facilities funded by taxpayers. Доволі цікаву статтю прочитав в ElPais щодо поведінки товариша Ілони. Цитую статтю повністю:

“Графтон - невелике містечко в штаті Нью-Гемпшир, на північному сході США, з населенням близько 1 400 осіб. Починаючи з 2004 року, він став об'єктом політичного експерименту з перетворення муніципалітету на анархо-капіталістичний рай. Трейсі підняла руки, захищаючись, і ведмідь одним потужним ударом пазуристої лапи розкришив їй одну з рук і сильно подряпав бік. Жінка впала в бік дверей, і ті зачинилися за нею, залишивши сам на сам із розлюченим хижаком.

Далі все відбувалося як у сповільненій зйомці, але ось, нарешті, ведмідь тікає в ліс, переслідуваний псом. Кай повернувся, радісно виляючи хвостом, гордий за здійснений ним подвиг. Настрій Трейсі був далеко не радісний. Вона втратила багато крові і безумовно не могла чекати до ранку.

Одна з відмінних рис міста Графтон, у якому розгорталися ці події, полягала в тому, що в ньому не було мобільного зв'язку. Тому жінці залишалося тільки дошкандибати до машини і сісти за кермо. Тому революцію колоністи зустріли з ентузіазмом, не очікуючи, звісно, що нова влада позбавить їх ведмедів, зате вважаючи, що вже податки точно платити не доведеться.

Їхні очікування не виправдалися, і обурені графтонці стали писати прохання до федеральної влади, зміст яких зводився до двох тез: "ми не хочемо платити податки, тому що нам дуже важко жити" і "ми не будемо платити податки". І не платили. Ба більше, 1781 року тоді незалежний штат Вермонт запросив їх під своє крило, обіцяючи не заїкатися про оподаткування. Городяни з радістю проголосували про від'єднання від Нью-Гемпшира.

Крапку в цьому питанні поставив Джордж Вашингтон, до якого дійшли звістки про те, що коїться. Він заявив, що "призупинить боротьбу зі спільним ворогом [Британською імперією]" і поверне всі свої сили, щоб "зрівняти цей штат із землею". Сусіднє містечко Канаан було практично в тій самій ситуації, що й Графтон. Не сказати, щоб у Канаані дуже любили податки, проте городяни і місцева влада так чи інакше зробили свій вибір. Вони вирішили, що публічна інфраструктура - річ потрібна, і витрачали гроші з міського бюджету на її створення. У Графтоні чинили навпаки. У "огрядний" 1881 рік міські збори проголосували за повне скасування сплати податків резидентами.

Проте все чомусь пішло не тим шляхом, який вони бачили перед собою.

У місті до 1930-х років не було ні пожежників, ні пожежної станції, незважаючи на те що графтонці регулярно гинули у вогні. Не було і поліцейської дільниці, і правоохоронцям доводилося проводити допити у себе вдома. І варто зазначити, що всього цього не було саме завдяки волевиявленню графтонців, які із завидною завзятістю голосували проти будь-яких витрат із муніципального бюджету. Нових жителів ззовні відсутність інфраструктури теж не приваблювала.

До 2010 року з'ясувалося, що, виявляється, муніципальний податок у двох поселеннях не надто різниться: власник будинку вартістю 150 тисяч доларів платив 930 доларів на рік у Канаані та 673 долари в Графтоні. Адже, незважаючи на істотно більші витрати на публічну інфраструктуру, канаанське населення було більшим за графтонське і мало в розпорядженні початкову школу, кілька церков, ресторанчиків, банків, магазин подарунків, дві пекарні тощо.

Утопія і "битви бомжів"

Але на початку 2000-х років люди, яким підхід графтонців припав до душі, знайшлися. Це були четверо нових поселенців: Джон Бабіарж, Тім Кондон, Ларрі Пендарвіс і Боб Галл. Усі вони були прихильниками лібертаріанської ідеології, описаної Айн Ренд у романі "Атлант розправив плечі". Усі вони мріяли про суспільство, у якому немає практично жодних регуляцій і податків, усім керує "невидима рука ринку", а індивідуальні спонукання особистості завжди вищі за суспільні. Саме таке суспільство вони збиралися будувати в Графтоні, який був обраний ними з очевидних причин. Це був початок проєкту "Вільне місто".

Якби все пішло, як було заплановано, до поселення ринули б сотні їхніх однодумців, які, - об'єднавши сили шляхом демократичних виборів, - змогли б скасувати купу дурних і непотрібних регуляцій, що поневолюють простих людей (приблизно так описував ініціативу Пендарвіс на одному з лібертаріанських форумів в інтернеті).

Серед невід'ємних прав активіст перераховував можливість мати більше двох непрацюючих автомобілів на своїй приватній території, право влаштовувати азартні ігри, право учнів прогулювати уроки в школі, право перевозити наркотики і займатися інцестом. Лібертаріанець також вимагав дозволити перевезення людських органів, дуелі та, зрештою, "битви безхатченків" - коли два громадянина могли б дати гроші безхатченкам, щоб ті побилися один з одним. І, звичайно ж, канібалізм.

Спочатку місцеві сприйняли новоприбулих позитивно - загалом спосіб мислення в них був спільний: і ті, й інші не любили податки. Однак дуже скоро з'ясувалося, що бурхлива діяльність зі створення в Графтоні осередку лібертаріанської партії припала графтонцям не до смаку, а дикі заяви про канібалізм, дуелі та бійки бездомних ще більше відвернули їх від прибульців. Отримавши жорстку відсіч від городян, зачинателі проекту "Вільного міста" не зневірилися. Вони лише вирішили, що на зустрічі, на яких вони намагалися проштовхувати свою ідеологію, приходили тільки їхні противники. Але ж, напевно, більшість, яка підтримує їхню ініціативу, просто сидить удома і чекає, коли все налагодиться.

Було вирішено залишитися в Графтоні, а не шукати краще місце для проекту. Так у місто, натхнені закликом, який четвірка засновників ініціативи залишила в онлайні, почалося паломництво лібертаріанців. Деякі з них приїжджали з грошима і сім'ями, готові купити будинок і облаштуватися. Але з якоїсь причини більшість із них виявилися самотніми чоловіками без гроша в кишені. Вони осідали на околиці міста, на стоянці трейлерів, у наметах і кабінах своїх будинків на колесах. Серед них, утім, були не тільки лібертаріанці - тут жили і "преппери" (люди, які готуються виживати після апокаліпсису), і комуно-анархісти, і бог знає хто ще.

Всю цю строкату компанію об'єднувала любов до абсолютної свободи і ненависть до держави. Боротьба з регуляціями в Графтоні розгорнулася неабияка - хоча, здавалося б, куди вже далі. Лібертаріанці вимагали визнати їхнє право загаджувати свою власність як і чим їм заманеться, розводити багаття в пожежонебезпечній зоні - знову ж таки, якщо це їхня власність - і взагалі творити все, що душі завгодно.

До того ж багато хто з них занадився носити зброю напоказ, нервуючи місцевих. Не можна сказати, що в місті можна було когось здивувати пістолетом, рушницею або навіть кулеметом. Однак негласний кодекс графтонця не дозволяв хизуватися нею. Зброя була призначена для утилітарних цілей. Якщо прийде ведмідь, людині потрібно було мати при собі те, чим можна дати відповідь тварині, якщо та буде вести себе агресивно

Лібертаріанці судилися з будь-якого приводу - а приводів було повно. Вони вірили, що все йде більш-менш добре, треба просто домогтися ще більшої свободи, для чого необхідно позбутися останніх регуляцій. Але серед них були й люди, які намагалися напоумити особливо екстремально налаштованих індивідів.

Одним із них був Джон Бабіарж. У перші роки, коли обслуговувати єдиний у місті пожежний автомобіль стало нікому, він став графтонським пожежником. Ба більше, одного разу він приїхав на виклик до одного зі своїх соратників і залив водою багаття, яке той палив у недозволеному місці, незважаючи на посушливу погоду. Це було нечувано, і спільнота анархо-капіталістів почала відчутно тріщати по швах.

У той час як любителі свободи намагалися зліпити з Графтона свою утопію, ведмеді зметикували, що мрії народні справді збулися - тільки для них, а не для людей. Якщо спочатку нові поселенці не помічали їх, то поступово присутність ведмедів ставала все більш помітною. Вони почали копатися в сміттєвих баках і в смітнику трейлерної стоянки, плюндрувати вулики і злизувати жир із грилів, що стоять на задніх дворах будинків. До того ж вони полюбили котів - не гладити, а їсти.

У той час сталася посуха, яка, до речі, позначилася і на ведмедях. Їжі стало мало, а отже, звірі почали ще ретельніше шукати її в людей. Одна лібертаріанка, яка годувала птахів насінням соняшнику, виявила, що ведмедики розоряють годівниці. Одного разу вона побачила ведмедя у своєму дворі - він був дуже худий і виснажений.

Так жінка, яку багато хто згодом знав на прізвисько Пончикова леді, стала виносити ще одне відро зерна і для цих тварин. Але ті дуже швидко розправлялися з ним, і тому незабаром вона стала виставляти два, три, чотири відра. Звірі хотіли їсти, і Пончикова леді не могла їм відмовити. Вона додавала у відра із зерном ще й кілька десятків дешевих пампушок - за що й заслужила прізвисько. Не дивно, що ведмеді стали днювати і ночувати біля годівниць.

Навмисно годували ведмедів і інші лібертаріанці. Коли федеральна Служба охорони рибальських ресурсів і диких тварин США оштрафувала людину на ім'я Чарлі Вандергоу на 20 тисяч доларів за підгодовування звірів, лібертаріанці обурилися.

"Вони не думають про захист звірів, вони існують тільки для того, щоб штрафувати людей, які люблять тварин", - сказав тоді один із них.

Перше, що спало на думку "преперам" та іншим мешканцям наметового містечка, - це встановити біля смітника, куди вони звалювали сміття, плакат "Ведмедям ходити заборонено". Навряд чи ведмеді вміли читати, але чим чорт не жартує. Утім, плакат допоміг підняти дух у таборі. Багато "виживальників" запаслися пістолетами великого калібру і, дивлячись на напис, переконували себе в тому, що це не вони перебувають на території ведмедів, а ведмеді - на їхній землі.

Трейсі Колберн стала першою в Графтоні жертвою нападу ведмедя за сто років. У наступні тижні і місяці і корінні графтонці, і жителі "Вільного міста" займалися пошуками винних.

Тим часом місто, структури влади якого лібертаріанці майже повністю позбавили фінансування, занурювалося в безодню хаосу. Ведмеді незабаром повернулися, а ось кількість лібертаріанців сильно зменшилася.
