The Russian propaganda machine is not very interesting to me personally, because in most cases it follows a long-established algorithm (it is interesting only when the katsaps are justified - it is cooler than any comedy). Today's events in Madrid and Marseille fit into the classic, I would even say textbook, scenario of Kremlin information operations. There are a number of factors that make this fake news particularly telling.
Firstly, the nature of the incidents themselves. Smoke was detected in Madrid, which can hardly be considered a full-fledged attack, and an explosion did occur in Marseille, but none of the investigative versions so far point to Ukraine. Nevertheless, the Russian media immediately started spreading rumours of a "terrorist attack" from Kyiv, which indicates a pre-prepared narrative.
Second, the synchronicity of the statements. First, the Russian Foreign Ministry warns of possible attacks on Russian diplomatic missions in Europe (19 February), and a few days later, incidents occur that are immediately presented as "proof" of this "threat". This "coincidence" looks too convenient, suggesting a cheap performance or the deliberate use of any emergency situation in the interests of the Russian Federation.
Thirdly, the geographical factor. russia is trying to intimidate those EU countries that have not yet taken a tough anti-Russian stance, by suggesting that Ukraine is not attacking those who have taken a softer line towards Moscow. This is evident in the choice of countries in the NWR's statements: Slovakia and Hungary are countries where there are still discussions about the level of support for Kyiv.
Another important point is the undermining of trust in European security services. the Kremlin is interested in showing that the EU security structures are not in control of the situation and are unable to prevent threats from Ukraine. If the Russians succeed in convincing a part of society of this version, this, with the help of agents of influence in these countries, will create additional pressure on European governments and may contribute to the spread of pro-Russian narratives in society
