Mike and I wrote about the under-sized Russian BTGs that invaded in February that were often 400-600 strong. Voluntary mobilization efforts in April-May were likely mostly forming companies. The new regional battalions appear to be 400 or fewer. 2/

@RALee85 Even at the outset some were 350-400. Reserve battalions drawn in the spring probably in that range or lower, with the regional volunteer units you might have 250. Not clear what comprises a BTG at this point and there’s not much in the way of standardization.

Battalions raised with volunteers will need more leadership to function, which probably means they have to be smaller (no time to train NCOs). I've been skeptical of BTGs as a metric since April, and the variance is only greater now with volunteer units.3/

BTGs were a useful figure during the buildup to show the percentage of the total Russian Ground Forces/VDV/Naval Infantry that were deployed near Ukraine, but the figure is less useful for other purposes, especially when the personnel count could vary significantly. 5/

manpower for regional volunteer units is incredibly inconsistent. we've seen some taking up to 400 troops, but we've also seen some begin pre-deployment training with less than 100. The MoD isn't waiting to fully form units ahead of training beginning

take the "Tigr" battalion for example, around 65 men have completed the full pre-deployment training cycle, which began in Primorsky, these men have now moved to Rostov prior to entering Ukraine. Here they've been joined by ~130 more fighters who are just starting their training
