If true, this is to conduct air-launched cruise missile strikes at strategic depth.

This is why Russia has all three of its Atlant-class cruisers in the Black and Mediterranean Sea and why there are MiG-31K with Kinzhal missiles and 4 Ty-22M3 bombers currently in Syria with Kh-32/22 cruise missiles. There are also MiG-31K aircraft with Kinzhals in Kaliningrad.

Putin's speaking on Russian TV. He says he's launched a "special military operation" in the Donbas and isn't planning to occupy Ukraine. But he's demanding Ukraine's army lay down its weapons and says Kyiv will be responsible for "possible bloodshed."

Russia also deployed two S-400 battalions, a Su-35S fighter squadron, and some of its top electronic warfare systems designed to interfere with NATO reconnaissance aircraft to Belarus in January to deter NATO involvement and to have a stronger posture to defend Kaliningrad.

I probably don't need to mention that the Grom 2022 strategic deterrence exercise moved to February 19th that typically occurs in the fall was also not a coincidence. Sadly, the military signals have been here.

The VDV has light BMD armored airborne vehicles, which means they can fly more of them in transport aircraft than heavier BMPs. The VDV deployment to Kazakhstan with the 31st Air Assault Brigade and 45th Spetsnaz Brigade was probably a useful preparation for this.

Presumably, the operation at the airport is being conducted by Russia's SSO, which seized all of the key targets in Crimea in February and March 2014.

The fog of pre-hostilities now is now replaced by the fog of war.
There will be confusion, chaos, and uncertainty. Therefore I will not provide "live" comments to every report coming in.
Based on military deployments pre H-hour, and Putins speech, I fear this is the big option

Russia deployed 10 ships to the Sea of Azov a few days ago, including 3 landing ships. They could have also sent landing craft. That means they could only conduct a small amphibious landing in Mariupol but it could be supported by a helicopter air assault operation from Crimea.

The majority of the amphibious large landing ships in the Black Sea, ~10 ships plus landing craft and Raptor fast attack boats, did not enter the Sea of Azov and could be used for an amphibious landing in Odessa. They could land 1-2 battalions depending on attachments.

RT @MarquardtA: Adding to the list, CNN team in Odessa heard two groups of explosions about 20 minutes apart. So that's in the north, east and south. All three sides where Russia had mustered troops.
