Russia invaded Ukraine with 75% of its permanent readiness BTGs as well as conscripts and Rosgvardia troops. They had to stretch the military thin to achieve this, which meant there was never much of a reserve if things went poorly. It isn't about trust, it's about numbers.

@EUStanAccount We're saying something different. The ground component of Russia's military is ~350,000 or less and that includes conscripts, air defense, etc. There just aren't many more ground units with contract soldiers to send, and they can't pull out everyone from Russia's bases overseas.
