NEW: Russia has deployed a battle group with armored personnel carriers and troops in Krasnaya Yaruga, just 9 miles from Ukraine's border.

A senior US defense official said today 80 percent of Russian forces around Ukraine are in "forward positions and ready to go."

RT @RALee85: This is the issue. If Ukraine's military tries to fight a conventional war with Russia, it will be defeated. An unconventional fight means moving into cities, which will lead to greater civilian casualties. All urban warfare is destructive and Russia lacks large PGM stockpiles.

Facing new Russian aggression Zelensky's speech to the nation, including a direct appeal to the Russian people. 'A powerful, dignified, mature, and heartfelt appeal for peace between Russians and Ukrainians that couldn't have been any more different from Putin's resentful rant.' https://t.co/eLpcq2C9A3

The previous times Putin used force were reactions to time-sensitive external catalysts. This time it would be a deliberate escalation planned and executed over months. That means Putin considered the costs and decided to escalate anyway and probably wouldn't accept a compromise.

@bobmoretti @YWNReporter at least a translation of the bit he spoke in Russian to the the Russians.

RT @PaulSonne: Still seeing a lot of people thinking this is going to be a conflict limited to the separatist regions and the area around them. One problem: Nothing about Russia's military posture suggests that.

RT @andersostlund: This is close to the frontline in Donbas. Very touching.

RT @JasminMuj: It's time to eject Russia from the Council of Europe. A decision to this effect by 2/3 of the members would be sufficient. Moscow should have no seat at the table at any relevant international forum while it continues its aggression against democratic Ukraine.

It looks as though Blinken did not intend to give a date. 1749/

RT @nolanwpeterson: In the summer of 2014, I had a one-way plane ticket to Ukraine. I left to report on the war, thinking I’d only be gone for about two weeks. Now, looking back all these years later, I know there was only one path I was ever supposed to take.
