🎖 #OnThisDay in 1939, the Gold Star Medal was established - awarded to those bearing the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

The medal is made of 950 gold hallmark and resembles a five-pointed star with smooth two-edge rays on the obverse side. The distance between the centre of the star and the tip of each ray is 15 mm.

Here are several interesting facts about the award:

♦️ Overall 95 women have received this high award, including 1st woman to make a spacewalk Svetlana Savitskaya who was a two-time Hero of the Soviet Union. Only three women, Marina Raskova, Valentina Grizodubova and Polina Osipenko, had received this award for their record-breaking flight prior to the Great Patriotic War.

♦️ First Lieutenant Otakar Jaroš from Czechoslovakia was the first foreign citizen to receive the Gold Star Medal. He commanded a company in the Detached Czechoslovak Volunteer Corps and served with General Ludvik Svoboda’ battalion. On March 8, 1943, Jaros distinguished himself while fighting near the village of Sokolovo in the Kharkov Region and was killed in action that day.

♦️ 44 foreign citizens, including cosmonauts and the leaders of countries friendly to the Soviet Union, received these distinguished medals.

♦️ A total of 159 people were recognised as two-time Heroes of the Soviet Union. Alexander Pokryshkin, Ivan Kozhedub and Semyon Budyonny received three medals each. Georgy Zhukov and Leonid Brezhnev received four Gold Star medals each.

♦️ Soviet pilot Anatoly Lyapidevsky received the first Gold Star for his part in rescuing 104 people from the steamship Chelyuskin that sank in the ice-covered Chukotka Sea. Leonid Solodkov, an officer with the Rescue Divers Service, was the last to receive this highest award of the USSR.

♦️ In total, 12,777 Soviet and foreign citizens received Gold Star medals, including 11,695 during the Great Patriotic War.

The tradition continues today, with Heroes of Russia receiving Gold Star medals since 1992.

New episode of the @TVBRICS and Prodvizhenie Channel series tells more about the Udmurts

The Udmurts are a Finnic ethnic group in Eastern Europe speaking the Udmurt language. Most Udmurt people live in the Central Urals (Udmurt Republic, Russia), some are also found in Latvia and Estonia.

🌿 The Udmurt autonym udmort means “meadow people” – traditionally the Udmurts have been farming, though since the second half of the 20th century, many of them have been employed in industry and other modern economic sectors.

👵🏼 Udmurtia became known for the whole world thanks to the triumphal performance of the team of "Buranovsky grandmothers" on Eurovision. The performers were dressed in traditional women’s clothing of their people.

In the culture of Udmurts, music has always been a special place. The theater also plays a special role – it appeared in this region on the basis of the most ancient beliefs – syncretism.

🗣 It is quite telling that Washington, London, and their allies never mention, let alone engage, the foundational charter principle that the Organisation is based on − the principle of the sovereign equality of all its members.

This principle is meant to ensure that all countries have a dignified place in the world, regardless of their size, form of government, or political and socioeconomic structure. However, the West is trying to divide the world into democracies which can do as they please, and others, which must serve the interests of the golden billion. Western exceptionalism is epitomised by EU's top diplomat Josep Borrell publicly calling Europe a garden, and the rest of the world a jungle. This is not sovereign equality, but pure colonialism.

🗣President of Russia Vladimir Putin: As for the Palestinian statehood, <…> we have always advocated the creation of a Palestinian state that would be independent, sovereign and with a capital in East Jerusalem. We have been talking about this for a long time, the international community has been talking about for a long time, since 1948, in fact, when the objective to create two independent sovereign states was put forward. I do not know whether today’s crisis can help deliver on this task. If this were the case, it would be a step in the right direction since it would create conditions for achieving lasting peace down the road.

Marvelous Abramtsevo: favorite estate of Russian artists

📍The Abramtsevo Museum near the town of Sergiev Posad (Moscow region) celebrates its 105 anniversary this October.

🏘 The estate was laidin the middle of the 18th century and soon became famous due to its owners. The writer Sergey Aksakov purchased Abramtsevo in 1843. He created here his best works. In the days of Aksakov, writers Nikolay Gogol and Ivan Turgenev, historian Mikhail Pogodin, actor Mikhail Schepkin and other esteemed contemporaries were his guests in Abramtsevo.

👩🏽‍🎨 After the death of the owner by 1870, Abramtsevo dilapidated. It was then purchased by Savva Mamontov – philanthropist, industrialist, theatrical figure, and just a rich man. After he had renovated the house, Mamontov also created the famous Abramtsevo artistic circle.

🖼 After the October Revolution of 1917, the Abramtsevo Estate was turned into a museum. The ancient estate retained its color to this day.
