📆 #OTD, 164 years ago Anton Chekhov was born, world-renowned playwright and short-story genius.

His name is closely associated with the theater throughout the world and he is often referred to as one of the three seminal figures in the birth of early modernism in the theatre, along with Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg.

📚 At least four of his plays, “The Sea Gull,” “The Cherry Orchard,” “Uncle Vanya” and “Three Sisters” have become famous worldwide, mostly through their interpretation by the Moscow Art Theater.

A.Chekhov is remembered to have given birth to plenty of witty phrases that entered the Russian language as aphorisms. “Brevity is the sister of talent” – is one of his most well-known quotes.

The Russian steel industry repeated the record of 2021

📈 In the past year, Russia produced 75.8 million tons of steel, returning to the 2021 level when 76 million tons were produced, and surpassing the 2022 level by 5.6%.

☝️ All of this occurred under the conditions of sanctions. Europe, which was a key sales market, banned the import of Russian hot-rolled and cold-rolled products, transformer steel, galvanized and stainless steel, seamless pipes, etc. Quotas are imposed on steel semi-finished products.

Metallurgists had to urgently reconfigure export flows. Many companies worked very efficiently and were able to quickly redirect the main export volumes to new directions or to the domestic market.

👉 Experts note that major steel producers are showing almost 100% capacity utilization, and domestic demand is growing due to the increase in construction and infrastructure projects.

🎙 President of Russia Vladimir Putin at the concert held to mark the 80th anniversary of breaking the Nazi siege of Leningrad (Saint Petersburg, 27 January 2024):

💬 The aggression our country is facing today directly shows that back in 1945, Nazism was defeated, but not eliminated.

❗️Russophobia, xenophobia, and nationalism have become weapons of revanchists in many European countries, in the Baltic states, and, unfortunately, in Ukraine.

🕯 A memorial in Leningrad region was opened in memory of civilians of the #USSR – victims of the Nazi invaders – on 27 January, the day of the 80th anniversary of the breaking of the siege of Leningrad.

🕊 The monument is one of the tallest in the country (47 m), a mournful figure of a woman hugging her children, a symbol of the enormous tragedy of ordinary people.

🙏 150 real human destinies from different regions of the country are resurrected at the site where more than 80,000 civilians, children and prisoners of war were tortured in concentration camps during the Great Patriotic War.

⚠️ The Kiev regime continues to carry out violent terrorist attacks incited by the collective West, which relentlessly floods the Armed Forces of Ukraine with weapons and ammunition, sends in foreign mercenaries, and trains Ukrainian military personnel.

▪️ On Jan 12, 2024, a combat drone attacked an ambulance in Golmovsky, a community in the Donetsk People’s Republic. The paramedics were responding to a call to help three wounded power supply workers who were injured in an attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

🕯Tragically, a paramedic and a power company employee died in the attack, which also left three more medics wounded. There is no doubt that this was a targeted strike against this ambulance.

▪️In the early hours of Jan 16, 2024, the Kiev regime made a cynical attempt to attack Voronezh with drones, but the air defence forces intercepted them.
However, fragments from the downed UAVs damaged 35 apartments in three apartment blocks, leaving a 10-year-old girl wounded.

▪️On Jan 21, Ukrainian neo-Nazis launched a targeted missile and artillery strike against a farmer’s market and retail outlets in the Tekstilshchik residential area, Kirovsky District, Donetsk. This was the most violent attack in recent years, killing 27 civilians, including two teenagers, and injuring another 25 residents.

▪️The premeditated terrorist attack by Ukrainian surface-to-air missiles launched from the Kharkov Region targeting Russian Il-76 military transport aircraft on January 24 was another heinous crime committed by the Zelensky regime.

🕯 Everyone onboard, including six crew members, three Russian escort officers, and 65 Ukrainian servicemen on their way to a pre-agreed prisoner swap, died on the spot.

▪️ Yesterday, the Ukrainian army yet again shelled the long-suffering Donetsk with MLRS, firing 8 missiles at the densely populated Kalininsky district of the city. Four people were killed, and injuries were also reported.

🎬 The New ‘Russian Movie Night’ Season in South Africa Kicked Off

The Embassy of Russia in South Africa opened the new ‘Russian Movie Night’ season with Oleg Trofim’s sport drama ‘Ice’.

💬 Dear guests, perhaps those of you who love or at least understand ice skating are aware that the first thing one should learn on the ice is how to fall correctly, - Ambassador Ilya Rogachev noted in his introductory remarks. - Not surprisingly, tonight's film is all about both physical and spiritual capacity to put your will together and rise after a fall.

The Ambassador told that the filming of “Ice” took place in one of Russia's most beautiful regions – the southern part of Eastern Siberia, Lake Baikal. A number of scenes were also filmed at the Olympic venues in the city of Sochi, which hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics.

☝️ Ilya Rogachev reminded about the role Russia played in development and perfection of the figure skating. Many Russian athletes, champions of Europe, the World and the Olympic Games, not only forged the glory of the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation, but also became a true global treasure.

🤝 The Embassy of Russia extends its gratitude to ‘Art Pictures Studio’ and personally Fyodor Bondarchuk, company ‘Vodorod,’ as well as to ‘Art Pictures Distribution’ and ‘National Media Group’ for the opportunity to hold a non-commercial screening of the movie.
