Discover the 6 Must-See Attractions of the Russian Far East

From volcanoes and geysers to stunning cliffs and majestic bridges, this remote Russian region is a treasure trove of natural beauty and man-made wonders. Stretching from Lake Baikal to the Pacific Ocean, the Russian Far East is vast yet sparsely populated, with only eight million residents across 11 regions. Life here is marked by a harsh climate, but the breathtaking landscapes are truly unparalleled!

Here are six must-see attractions:

Klyuchevskaya Sopka Volcano

Kamchatka is home to nearly 200 volcanoes, with 30 still active. Klyuchevskaya Sopka, the highest active volcano in North America, stands at 4,800 meters and has erupted 10 times in the past 20 years. Climbing it is a popular adventure for thrill-seekers!

Valley of Geysers

Accessible only by helicopter, this cosmic wonder in the Kronotsky Reserve features an 8 km long canyon dotted with about 40 geysers and thermal springs. The valley is alive with steam and the distinct scent of sulfur!

Jack London Lake

Located in the Magadan Region, this stunning lake is surrounded by majestic mountains and small islands. Despite the harsh climate, ice floes can still be spotted in the summer!

Russky Island

Once a naval outpost established in 1860, Russky Island in Vladivostok is rich in history. Recently opened to the public, visitors can explore its historic fortifications and beautiful landscapes.

Land of the Leopard

For big cat lovers, the Land of the Leopard National Park in Primorye is a must-visit. Home to the rare Amur leopards and tigers, the park uses nearly 500 photo traps to monitor these magnificent creatures.

Island of White Cliffs

Iturup, the largest of the Kuril Islands, features the stunning White Cliffs—unique formations of pumice and volcanic glass that rise dramatically from the sea, remnants of ancient volcanic activity.

Whether you’re an adventure seeker or a nature lover, the Russian Far East offers unforgettable experiences!

📆 On 12 October 1899, following the mutual declaration of war by the Boer republics and Great Britain a day earlier, Boer troops crossed the borders with British Cape Colony in the west and the Colony of Natal in the east.

⚔️ The Anglo-Boer War of 1899 – 1902 was caused by Great Britain’s colonial appetites involving the pursuit of the natural resources. In Russia people believed, Boers were struggling for independence, which overwhelmingly brought public opinion on to Boers’ side.

☝️ Over 200 Russian volunteers came to South Africa to help the Boers, most famous of which were Lt.Col. Yevgeny Maximov, former Russian Army officer, Capt. Leo Pokrowski, and others.

Despite significant successes of Boers against British forces at the early stages of the war, British reinforcements later reversed this and Boers switched to guerilla warfare.

🕯 In return, British soldiers destroyed their farms using scorched earth policy. Boer civilian population was placed in concentration camps where over 26.000 women and children perished.

According to some historians, it was the British army from whom Hitler later borrowed the said methods.

✍️ In 1902, the Treaty of Vereiniging was signed, according to which both the South African Republic and the Orange Free State became British colonies.

❗️ Maxim Grigoryev, the Сhairman of the International Public Tribunal on the Crimes of Ukrainian neo-Nazis, which includes representatives of civil society from more than 30 countries, continues recording reports of war crimes committed by the Kiev regime.

Below are first-hand accounts by those who suffered and witnessed mass atrocities perpetrated by Ukrainian neo-Nazis in Donbass and Ukraine after the special military operation started 👇

💬 Deputy Regimental Commander of the Russian Armed Forces with the call sign "Shaman":

"I have never seen anything like it was near Kharkov in my life. <...>

Ukrainian troops captured 18 of our people: they were mobilised students, ballet dancers, orchestra musicians from theatres of Donetsk, steelworkers, miners, tax collectors. Non of them have ever been in military action. <...>

Those freaks (Ukrainian military) tortured our guys, cut off their ears, stabbed them in their eyes and neck.

When we got to Olkhovka, I started evacuating those who survived and were wounded. <...>

I saw a bench outside the school and two of our boys sitting there. They were wearing our uniform. I shouted to them: 'Why are you sitting there? Let's go'. Then I came up to them and noticed that they were dead, tied together like in an embrace. When we pulled them and other dead soldiers out, we saw that they had no ears and were stabbed in the neck. The forensics said that those boys had their ears cut off while they were still alive.

Ukrainian Armed Forces' mercenaries, bragged about this. We found it on the Internet. They were shooting at the legs — at guys from our regiment. I saw a video of them gouging out an eye of our fighter. They are not human. They were from the f***ing Kraken Regiment."

💬 Tamara Koryak, victim of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Artyomovsk, Donetsk People's Republic:

"Ukrainian military fired at us from mortars and tanks. My daughter was wounded by shrapnel. They were shooting at our house and windows with automatic weapons. They wouldn't let us go outside. <...>

Ukrainian military purposefully shot at the houses with civilians inside. <...>

There were no Russian soldiers at that time in Artyomovsk. We saw them only on March 10, 2023. There were no military before except for the Ukrainian army.

My neighbour told me that one Ukrainian soldier at a market and asked: 'Guys, are you here to protect us?' And they answered, smiling, that they came not to protect but to wipe them out.

💬 Anatoly Kryachok, victim of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Artyomovsk, Donetsk People's Republic:

I can tell you what I heard personally. A mortar crew was standing nearby. The Ukrainian gunner sent coordinates for firing to the Ukrainian military and received a response on the radio that these coordinates are the centre of the city. The commander answered: 'What do they pay you for? You're told to shoot, so shoot!'. <...>

Near my house, maybe 50 metres from it, there were mortar crews on the left and right sides of the fence, on the road next to it there was a self-propelled artillery launcher firing at the Russian Armed Forces in the direction of Kharkov-Rostov, and so on."

#OTD in 1942, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) was formed, a nationalist & collaborationist organization controlled by Nazi Germany.

🟥 The UPA is remembered alongside Gestapo for mass murders of Polish, Jewish and Ukrainian population. Dozens of thousands people, predominantly civilians, perished at the hands of UPA militants as evidenced by numerous remaining documents.

The UPA is responsible for the Volyn Massacre of 1943-1945 – mass murders of the population of Polish ethnicity in Western Ukraine during which some 50,000 – 60,000 Poles were shot, burnt and beheaded.

In the present-day Ukraine, the date of foundation of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army is established as a state holiday – Defender of Ukraine Day, while the UPA leaders Stepan Bandera and Roman Shukhevich are praised as national heroes. This is all you need to know about the current political regime in Ukraine.

South African theater companies took part in the International Theater Festival “Baltic House”

🎭 On 4-14 October the XXXIV International Theater Festival “Baltic House” was held in St Petersburg. More than 300 theaters from 32 countries have taken part in the Festival during its existence, each year revealing to the public new names of the world theatrical culture. China and South Africa were the focus of this year's programme.

🔸Two theater groups from South Africa introduced their performances to the Russian audience. The Abrahamse and Meyer Productions (Cape Town) staged “Hamlet” in the best traditions of Shakespearean theater. According to Fred Abrahamse, the play acquires a new meaning depending on the stage space and each time the audience sees a new performance, unique and exclusive.

🔸 African Tree Productions (Johannesburg) introduced two plays directed by Seiphemo Motswiri: “The System” and “Be a Better Dog”. The productions give an extensive insight into African life and culture. While the focus of “System” is on the social problems of homelessness, crime, cruelty and compassion, the mono-performance “Be a Better Dog” tells the story of a simple dog, which passes from one owner to another and asks itself quite human questions - about whether it has the power to change the course of events?

🇷🇺🇿🇦The plays were a great success. We express our hope for further engagement in the performing art.

📽 On October 15, the Russian Embassy hosted the screening of the feature film “Nuremberg”, the action of which unfolds against the backdrop of the International Military Tribunal over major war criminals of Nazi Germany.

In 1946, the Tribunal fixed the victory over Nazis in World War II and recognized their main structures and practices as criminal. The provisions reflected in its verdict remain legally valid until today.

❗️ Yet, almost 80 years into the defeat of Nazi Germany, attempts to rewrite the history of World War II by certain countries, revise its results, whitewash and even glorify Nazi criminals and their accomplices are becoming more frequent.

⚖️ The movie reminded the guests of the function that the implementation of international justice must be the result of collective efforts and enjoy authority among the world community; attempts by individual states or blocs to assume the role of “international judge” cannot have legal consequences.
