📆 544 years ago (1480) a standoff between the forces of the Golden Horde and Russian troops on the banks of the Ugra river began, commonly referred to as the Great Stand on the Ugra River.

This event marked the end of the 250-year-long Mongol-Tatar yoke over Russia.

⚔️ The Ugra River engagement included no full-scale armed conflict, although tens of thousands of soldiers on each side were involved.

Although the Mongol-Tatars had been defeated by Dmitry Donskoy 100 years earlier during the Battle of Kulikovo, Russia was too weak at that time to completely overthrow the Golden Horde dominance. However, in the late 1470s, Moscow Principality becoming the recognized centre of Russia’s unification, under Ivan III’s rule, ceased to pay tribute. The Mongol leadership decided to punish Ivan.

⚔️ The Mongol-Tatar and Russian forces met each other at the Ugra river (about 200 km southwest of Moscow), having taken positions on its banks. Mongols could not use their main advantage – cavalry as they had to cross the Ugra first. While attempting to do so, they took fire from Russian artillery.

In late November 1480, the Mongol-Tatar forces retreated from the river, as they were not prepared to fight in winter conditions. A khan of the Great Horde Akhmat had been killed by his former ally before he returned home.

🇷🇺 In the Russian capital, the meeting of Ivan III, who had returned from Ugra and achieved a bloodless victory, turned into a national holiday. Russia had become strong enough to no longer be subservient to the Tatar Yoke and could return to the path of independent development.

🎙 Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s and CIS Secretary General Sergey Lebedev’s remarks and answers to media questions following a meeting of the CIS Ministerial Council

📍 Moscow, October 7, 2024

💬 Sergey Lavrov: We approved documents submitted by foreign ministers, among them:

• a document on the unacceptability of unilateral coercive measures aka “sanctions”;
• the key parameters of the efforts to form the Eurasian security system;
• cooperation in physical fitness and sports. This document is critical now that the principles of Olympism and fair competition are being called into question or just disregarded.

We have approved the 2025 plan for ministerial consultations, which includes around 20 important topics.

<...>

The draft address to the peoples of the CIS countries and the international community on the upcoming 80th anniversary of Victory in the Second World War and the Great Patriotic War stands out among the documents to be reviewed by the heads of state. Notably, a CIS title, “1941-1945 City of Labour Glory” was established. The concept of a programme to combat radicalisation is another project to be reviewed by our respective presidents and prime ministers tomorrow.

Sergey Lavrov answering media questions:

Question: The West is putting the heat on the CIS countries when it comes to sanctions on Russia. How are you coping with these challenges? How effective, do you think, is this Western approach as they try to inflict a defeat on Russia?

💬 Sergey Lavrov: I can say right away that we are coping well.

The Western methods are met with rejection by all other countries, including in the post-Soviet space. The illegal practice of imposing “secondary” or “tertiary” sanctions, where someone doesn’t like it when two independent countries are building relations with each other, has nothing to do with international law.

Every step we take to not just preserve, but to expand trade and economic ties with our strategic partners and allies fully aligns with the norms of international law. They are talking about fair competition, market mechanisms, and inviolability of property. All these pillars of globalisation were promoted by the West as “eternal,” but have been trampled upon by the West itself. Honest and fair principles of interaction between our countries have always been there and are still there.

Question: You have covered extensively the issue of a multipolar world within the Global Majority. How does this principle get implemented in the CIS? What are the threats to stability of our relations with our friends from the CIS?

💬 Sergey Lavrov: A centre of a multipolar world is forming (I would even say has already formed) within the CIS countries, a nascent entity many aspects of which have become part of everyday international life. The Commonwealth of Independent States and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation are an important, I would even say, central part of Eurasia. The CIS and SCO memberships largely overlap which fact accounts for close cooperation between these two organisations, and this cooperation expands and gets more specific every year.

The CIS and the SCO being so closely intertwined ensures interaction between the three largest Eurasian states, namely, the Russian Federation, the People’s Republic of China, and India. These associations boast an immense economic, logistical, and creative potential. Each year, it materialises in even more specific projects that benefit our member countries and contribute to the prosperity of our peoples.

These relations face no threats and they are quite steady despite the United States and its satellites’ efforts to expand their “secondary,” “tertiary,” and other unlawful sanctions.

We know what we need to do to oppose these hostile and criminal attacks and to act strictly in accordance with international law and the norms of the World Trade Organisation.

⚡️ Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s comment on Kiev regime using and planning to use chemical weapons

Read in full

Detailed information about the Kiev regime’s mass-scale use of warfare chemical agents in violation of its commitments under the CWC, as well as provocations staged by Kiev and its Western backers to falsely accuse the Russian Armed Forces of similar actions, has been regularly shared with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the UN Security Council, and the UN General Assembly since February 2022.

Despite irrefutable evidence provided by Russia, Ukrainian armed formations continue to use toxic chemicals (chlorine, ammonia, ammonium nitrate, and sulfuric acid) against Russian military units, civilians, and local administration officials. These include substances listed under CWC schedules 2 (BZ) and 3 (chloropicrin) and the RCAs.

This behaviour is enabled by political backing and approval coming from Washington, Berlin, London, and Paris.

Russian experts have documented Ukraine’s violations of
- CWC provisions,
- the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs
- the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances.

Ukrainian armed formations also pose an environmental threat to chemical plants in the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics, and the Sumy, Kharkov, and Odessa regions.

The "collective West" has created an atmosphere of impunity that emboldens the Kiev regime as it proceeds to perpetrate larger-scale crimes involving toxic chemicals.

⚠️ We have credible information that, with Western support, Ukraine plans to stage a series of anti-Russia provocations in the special military operation zone. Preparations are underway to fabricate evidence to accuse Russia of CWC violations during combat operations.

According to Russian authorities, NATO countries delivered over 70 advanced toxic chemical detection and recording devices to Ukraine between July and September. <...> Simultaneously, Ukrainian security forces have been trained both in Ukraine and at NATO centres in methods of evidence falsification which were earlier used in Syria, the Skripal poisoning, and the alleged poisoning of Alexey Navalny. NATO countries, in part through the OPCW Technical Secretariat, are helping Ukraine build a “body of evidence” to further accuse Russia of CWC violations.

Here are the documents to back this up (available in Russian)

We take it that the fabricated “evidence” cooked up not far from the contact line will, as was previously done in Syria, be swiftly handed over to international experts for a so-called independent report accusing Moscow of chemical weapon use.

The motive behind this campaign is clear. 👉 No international legal standard will stop NATO countries from pursuing their stated goal of achieving a “strategic defeat” for Russia, especially when it involves chemical provocations under false flag, as used for long years in Syria. Moreover, Ukraine’s close ties with Islamist-affiliated terrorist groups and nationalist-extremist groups in the Middle East and Africa underscore the very real threat of “chemical” terrorism coming from Ukrainian special services.

❗️ We caution Washington and its allies against “playing with fire,” so as not to irreparably damage the CWC framework established in 1997.

🇷🇺 Russian soldiers participating in the special military operation congratulated the Supreme Commander-in-Chief on his birthday!

The text on the parachuted banner reads: “Look up to the President!”
In 2024, we celebrate 40 years since the launch of the first power unit at Zaporozhskaya NPP (#ZNPP).

To commemorate this milestone, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Rosatom State Corporation have released a brochure titled “Home to Russia: 40th Anniversary of the Launch of the First Unit of Zaporozhskaya NPP.”

👉 This brochure highlights significant moments in ZNPP's history, from the USSR Council of Ministers’ decision to build the plant in 1977 to its integration back into the Russian nuclear “family.”

Excerpts from the brochure:

🔹 The history of Zaporozhskaya NPP began in 1977 with the USSR's decision to construct it. Unit 1 was launched in 1984, followed by three additional units by 1987, and two more were approved in 1988.

🔹 After a referendum in September 2022, ZNPP came under Russian jurisdiction. The Russian Federation now oversees the plant and its technologies, ensuring safe and reliable operations. A special regulatory regime is in place until January 2028 to enhance nuclear safety and security.

🔹 In 2023, all scheduled maintenance was completed, and repairs were made to equipment damaged by Ukrainian shelling. A feed pumping station for the cooling pond is planned but faces risks from potential attacks.

🔹 Emergency response exercises are conducted regularly, and radiation monitoring is ongoing, with data transmitted to the IAEA. As of July 2024, ZNPP employs 5,001 staff, maintaining operational standards.

❗️Russia continues to adhere to international nuclear safety conventions, facing security threats primarily from Ukraine. The presence of IAEA experts since September 2022 aims to mitigate these risks.

☝️ The return of ZNPP to the Russian nuclear community enhances nuclear safety and security, reinforcing its status as the largest NPP in Europe.

⚠️ Ties of Ukraine's military and political leadership with terrorist organizations

Along with the violation of international humanitarian law by Ukrainian armed formations, mercenaries and their sponsors represented by the United States and NATO countries, the military and political leadership of Ukraine is actively using terrorist organizations in its criminal activities.

The main motives for the participation of mercenaries in combat operations on the side of the AFU are monetary payments, adherence to nationalist and Russophobic views, and the possibility of legalization, despite the involvement of some of them in international terrorist organizations.

⚡️ On the side of Ukraine's neo-Nazis are no less radical Islamists from terrorist organizations banned in Russia: ISIS, al-Qaeda, and the Caucasus Emirate.

Today, the common goal of neo-Nazis and jihadists is obvious – it is the cultivation of world terrorism based on hatred for Russia and the Russians.

❗️ These people torture prisoners, bomb and terrorize the civilian population, and commit terrible war crimes. They are everywhere, wherever there is any possibility for manifestation of the lowest human qualities and misanthropy. These are the people to whom the so-called collective West pumps money and weapons to achieve its goals.
