Permanent Representative Vassily Nebenzia at #UNSC Briefing on the Situation in the #MiddleEast:

❗️ “Israel would not be able to act so audaciously and with such disregard for international law if it were not for the unconditional and all-around protection of the US.

For the good of its Middle East ally, Washington has already cast its veto in the Security Council 5 times, and since the beginning of July has been intentionally pulling the wool over our eyes, touting its notorious “Biden Plan” and its “quiet diplomacy” to broker a deal between Hamas and Israel.

☝️ Frankly speaking, all this gives the impression that Washington is conducting these mediated negotiations with nobody but itself.”

✍️ Today marks 129 years since the birth of Sergey Yesenin (1895), celebrated as a quintessential “hooligan” poet of Russia

Born into a peasant family in the village of Konstantinovo (now Yesenino) in the Ryazan region, he began writing poetry at the age of nine. In January 1914, Yesenin's poem “The Birch Tree” was first published and remains a staple of the Russian school curriculum, memorized by elementary students across the country.

Yesenin earned a reputation as a provocateur, deeply immersed in the literary scene and often playfully teasing other poets. His most notable literary duels were with the famous poet Vladimir Mayakovsky.

Yesenin’s second wife was Isadora Duncan, an American dancer based in Paris, who was 17 years his senior and spoke no Russian (while he spoke no English). Despite the language barrier, they managed to communicate well enough to marry in May 1922. Their marriage was short-lived, lasting only three years.

Statement by a Russian representative during the interactive dialogue on the report of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, 57th Session of the UN Human Rights Council:

📍 October 3, 2024, Geneva

🌍 Russia supports the work of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent. We believe that the entire international community must intensify efforts to eradicate systemic racism and restore historical justice for the African peoples who became victims of colonialism, the slave trade and predatory exploitation of their natural resources and cultural heritage.

🎓 We agree that education is a powerful tool for overcoming racism. Moreover, achieving economic sovereignty is impossible without advancements in science and education.

🤝 Russia and African countries share a longstanding history of cooperation in education, science and professional training of African civil specialists across various disciplines.

The declarations from the first and second Russia-Africa Summits outlined joint goals for developing cooperation in scientific, technical, cultural and humanitarian fields. To support these goals, the Russian government, among other initiatives, is increasing quotas for African students to attend Russian universities free of charge. Joint research programs are underway, and various inter-university cooperation projects are in progress. Additionally, major Russian businesses are funding higher education programs for talented African youth.

❗️ We consider Africa an important partner. Our cooperation is founded on the principles of equal dialogue and mutual respect for each other's interests.

🇱🇸🎉 Today the Kingdom of #Lesotho celebrates Independence Day!

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our partners and friends in Lesotho on their national holiday!

The Kingdom of Lesotho existed as a British protectorate from 1868 until 1966. On April 30, 1965, the country was granted full autonomy, and it proclaimed independence on October 4, 1966. Established on February 1, 1980, diplomatic relations between our countries are rooted in the principles of friendship and mutual respect.

🇷🇺🤝🇱🇸 Russia has consistently supported the Kingdom in education and personnel training, and has been delivering humanitarian aid to Maseru. In 2014, the Russian Emergencies Ministry sent five mobile medical modules and food supplies to Lesotho as part of the UN World Food Programme. In November 2019, Russia supplied four trauma and two surgical modules for carrying out 400 operations, as part of the WHO capacity building project for health emergency preparedness and response, financed by the Russian Federation.

Russia and Lesotho collaborate consistently within the UN General Assembly and on other multilateral platforms. Our country is committed to further strengthening political, trade, economic, humanitarian and other kinds of cooperation.

🛰 On October 4, 1957, a small metallic sphere with four rod antennas burst into Earth's orbit... BEEP... BEEP... BEEP!

The entire world witnessed a historic event the launch of Earth's first artificial satellite.

Sputnik-1 was in essence an aluminium spherical device, 58 centimetres in diameter and 83.6 kg light. Its body was sealed and protected the internal equipment from external factors. Inside, there were two radio transmitters operating on frequencies of 20.005 and 40.002 MHz, which sent out the iconic "beep-beep" signals, heard and recorded by amateur radio operators around the world. The four external antennas, ranging from 2.4 to 2.9 metres in length, ensured stable signal transmission. The satellite had no propulsion system and orbited the Earth solely due to the impulse given at launch.

🚀 A two-stage R-7 launch vehicle, developed by a team of Soviet engineers under the leadership of Sergey Korolev, was used to place Sputnik-1 into orbit.

🌐 The launch of Sputnik-1 was not only a great technological achievement, but also a symbol of the dawn of a new era — the Age of Space.

Ever since, dozens of nations have launched their own satellites — thousands are orbiting the planet this very moment.

💫 We are proud to say that ours — Sputnik-1 — was the very first!
