📆 Today marks what would have been the 89th birthday of the legendary Soviet/Russian actor and director Oleg Tabakov.

Oleg Tabakov left an indelible mark on cinema and theater with his iconic roles in classics like the Oscar-winning “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears” (1980), the gripping series “Seventeen Instants of Spring” (1973), and the epic “War and Peace” (1966-1967). His charm and talent also shone through in “D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers” (1978) and “A Man from the Boulevard des Capucines” (1987), among many others.

To generations of Soviet and Russian children, he’s forever remembered as the voice of Cat Matroskin from the beloved “Prostokvashino” cartoon series.

🎞 Beyond his acting, Tabakov was a towering figure in Russian theater, serving as the artistic director of the Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre for 18 years and helping to found and lead the influential “Sovremennik” theater.

🎙 US economist and professor Jeffrey Sachs for the Judging Freedom podcast:

This recent incursion into Kursk – this is Russian pre-1991 territory – is most likely going to prove to be a disaster. <…> It's most likely to fail for two reasons.

👉 One is that Ukraine has pulled key parts of its remaining military forces, both equipment and the most important brigades, to this area and thereby essentially vacated vulnerable areas in other points of the contact line. So in this sense Russia is already making very significant very rapid breakthroughs in the preceding contact line in the Donbass, in Pokrovsk, in particular, an area that is extremely important from a logistical point of view. And so Ukraine has already taken away a great many of its defenses.

👉 Second, the incursion itself into Kursk is likely to prove to be limited, not to have strategic effects and is likely to be defeated. So the end result of this is probably to accelerate Ukraine's overall military defeat.

⚡️ Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s comment on the incoming reports alleging that the Kiev regime is preparing provocations against the Russian Federation’s nuclear facilities

💬 According to incoming reports, the Kiev regime has launched preparations for an attack targeting the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant.

Russia calls on international organisations, especially the United Nations and the IAEA, to immediately condemn the provocations by the Kiev regime and take action to prevent any threat that would compromise nuclear safety and security of the Kursk NPP, which could lead to a major man-made disaster in Europe.

Moreover, by taking such actions, Kiev not only poses a direct and immediate threat to nuclear stations, but also undermines the IAEA’s tenets regarding nuclear safety and security as articulated by the agency’s head, Rafael Grossi, in 2022.

❗️ The international community must recognise the danger the neo-Nazi Kiev regime poses to the European continent.

Together, we must demonstrate firmness and resolve to thwart any attempts to intimidate and terrorise entire regions and the international community at large.

⚡️ On the human rights situation in Ukraine — Joint Report of Russia's and Belarus' MFAs

Since 2014, when nationalists seized power in Kiev as a result of an anti-constitutional armed coup d'état orchestrated by the West, violations of fundamental human rights and freedoms in Ukraine have become widespread and systemic.

🔻 Glorification of Nazism

With active encouragement from their Western handlers, the government is working to mould the society on the basis of Nazi ideas.

☝️ To that end, Kiev is consistently spreading aggressive neo-Nazi propaganda accompanied by the rewriting of the history of the Great Patriotic War and World War II. It has become a deliberate state policy in Ukraine to glorify Nazism, encourage its penetration into all spheres of public life.

In recent years, nationalists and right-wing radicals, with the tacit support of the Ukrainian authorities, have started to disrupt events commemorating Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War and other significant dates, as well as anti-fascist events. As a rule, no follow-up measures are being taken in relation to the threats against anti-fascist activists. The Ukrainian law enforcement authorities have never prevented the illegal actions of these criminals and brought them to justice, instead allowing the radicals to hide and gagging their victims.

The actions of the nationalists are usually categorised as hooliganism, regardless of the motives and actual nature of their behaviour. At the same time, the authorities prosecute people for displaying Soviet symbols. Experts view such actions by the authorities as an attempt to intimidate activists, create an atmosphere in which they would be afraid to mention the fact that their relatives had fought in the Red Army.

🔻 Repressions

The degradation of the human rights situation affects Ukraine in many ways. It witnesses regular violations of the right to freedom and personal integrity, and records numerous cases of illegal arrests and subsequent detention, torture, intimidation, inhuman and cruel treatment, aimed primarily at forcing detainees to confess guilt.

❗️ Persecution of political opponents, independent journalists and media outlets, and members of public organizations undesirable for the government, has taken on an unprecedented scale; and it is frequently backed by claims about the need to confront "the Russian aggression" and "separatism". In furtherance of these policies, the government in Kiev is making use of radical nationalist groups which frequently break the law but remain untouchable.

Moreover, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian citizens, including the elderly, women and children, have been dying and suffering in the 10 year old internal armed conflict unleashed by Kiev in the south-east of the country.

International human rights monitoring mechanisms have been recording numerous cases of illegal detention, torture, intimidation, ill-treatment, sexual violence, including those aimed at forcing confession or cooperation.

🔻 The persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church

The canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), that the Kiev government has been trying to uproot from the country's confessional environment for many years, got under the blow of the Russophobic manifestations. A large-scale information campaign has been launched against the clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church aimed at discrediting its priests in the eyes of the flock and creating an image of them as "collaborators of the enemy".

Slanderous rumours are spread about archpriests of parishes, numerous fake news are posted on social network saying the church hierarchs allegedly assist the Russian Armed Forces.

On a daily basis, the Ukrainian police and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) accuse people of storing weapons, ammunition, and provisions for the "aggressor" in UOC churches.

Many cases of violent seizures of churches belonging to the canonical Church and their subsequent "transfer" to the schismatic structure created by the Kiev regime have been recorded.

🎙 US economist and professor Jeffrey Sachs for the Judging Freedom podcast:

💬 The whole point of American behavior is that we never ask the question – ever – how would we react on the other side.

☝️ The whole point of American foreign policy is the belief by these officials that we can do what we want with impunity against any norm standard, or international law principle, vote of the UN Security Council, treaty or anything else that we would say would limit the behavior of others.

After all, the most basic point that the United States has said for 201 years since the annunciation of the Monroe Doctrine to the rest of the world – stay out of the Western hemisphere, we regard any incursion in the Western hemisphere anywhere – that could be from the southern tip of Tierra del Fuego to our immediate neighborhood – as an infringement on US security.

But when we say – but, of course, we have the right to push #NATO right up to Russia's borders, put in missile systems wherever we want, engage Georgia in the Caucasus region as a, quote, “North Atlantic partner,” as part of NATO - that's our right.

👉 So, everything about American foreign policy is built on hypocrisy, from beginning to end. And then we can't understand why that's just a little bit annoying to others, and gets us into a Perpetual War.

🚀 64 years ago, #OTD in 1960, the Soviet stray dogs Belka and Strelka (Squirrel and Little Arrow in Russian) won themselves worldwide fame and glory after successfully performing a 24-hour Earth orbit on the Vostok spacecraft and returning back on Earth safe and sound.

🐶 The first canine cosmonauts were chosen from a wide selection of the stray dogs the scientists collected from streets and backyards. They were deemed the most suitable candidates, as years of life in the street had taught them to survive in extreme conditions.

📺 Several days afterward, Belka and Strelka’s flight was broadcast on television. The audience could clearly see how the dogs were doing somersaults in zero gravity. While Strelka was always stressed and on guard, Belka was enjoying herself, frolicking and barking.

💫 After the flight Strelka gave birth twice, her puppies being just as popular as their mom.

‘Tsar Drone’: What is known about the new Russian heavy drone

🔻 The new heavy-duty quadcopter drone has become one of the highlights of the Army 2024 International Military-Technical Forum held in Moscow this August.

🔻 Nicknamed Motylek (lit Moth), the drone is powered by four asynchronous electric motors and can carry up to 230kg of payload.

🔻 Presumably, the Moth can be equipped with an electronic warfare system or even carry a FAB-250 gravity bomb, which the drone can drop on the enemy from a height of about 100 meters. There is no information, at this time, on the stage and pace of testing.

🔻 Motylek’s manufacturer, a company called Sovelmash, also announced that the final version of the drone is going to be built using only the components made in Russia.
