🏔 Summer is the best time to discover the mountains in Russia!

Russia boasts breathtaking mountain landscapes that will leave you in awe: approximately 30% of the country’s territory is covered by mountains. And summer is the perfect season to explore them!

Below, we highlight the largest mountain ranges:

🌋 Caucasus Mountains

The youngest mountains in Russia (and some of the youngest in the world) are in the Caucasus - they were formed 28 million years ago. In terms of mountains, they have a lot of room to grow. And by the way, they really do grow - by several millimeters per year.

The northern part of the Russian Caucasus contains the most of the glaciers, as well as the highest point in Europe - Mount Elbrus (5,642 meters).

Other highest mountains in Russia are also located there - Dykhtau (5,204 m), Koshtan-Tau (5,152 m), Pushkin Peak (5,100 m).

🌋 Ural Mountains

The Ural Mountains are not very high (the highest point is Mount Narodnaya, 1,895 m), but they are among the oldest on the planet - they are about 350 million years old!

In the Southern Urals, there is Mount Karandash, which is many times older than the mountain range. On its slopes there is a rock called ‘israndite’, a remnant of a supercontinent that existed in the Archean era two billion years ago. There is such an abundance of copper ore, minerals and gemstones in the Urals that these mountains are often referred to as the country's treasury.

🌋 Altai Mountains

The Altai Mountains are one of the most popular destinations for tourism in Russia. One of the most picturesque roads in the country, the Chuisky tract, passes there and the high-mountainous Katun River, which changes colour from azure to gray. It is also home to Mount Belukha, a sacred place for the Altai people and the highest point (4,506 meters) of this mountain range.

Three of their most picturesque sections are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List under the name ‘Golden Mountains of Altai’.

🌋 Sayan Mountains

The Altai Mountains in Southern Siberia are bordered by another huge mountain range, the Sayan Mountains, consisting of the Western and Eastern Sayan Mountains. They are almost at right angles to each other. Almost all glaciers are located in the Eastern Sayans. Their highest point is Mount Kyzyl Taina (3,121 m).

The protected part of the Eastern Sayan Mountains is located on the outskirts of the city of Krasnoyarsk - this is the Krasnoyarsk Pillars National Park, famous for its bizarre rocks.

🌋 Putorana Plateau

This is a giant mountain range above the Arctic Circle with fantastic landscapes. Its area is about 250,000 square kilometers, which is comparable to the size of Great Britain.

The Putorana Plateau is a mountain range without peaks, which are cut by waterfalls and deep canyons. There is a huge number of places where no man has ever set foot.

The geographical center of Russia - Lake Vivi - is on the plateau, which is covered with ice most of the year. It is the largest freshwater lake in this region (its total length is 90 km), the inhabitants even call it the “local Baikal”.

🎙 Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin’s interview with Rossiya Segodnya (July 12, 2024)

Key Points:

• We are aware of the Kiev regime and its Western patrons’ plans to make up for the failure of the “peace summit” held at Burgenstock Resort in Switzerland in mid-June by holding a similar event. They are even thinking of inviting Russia to it. They are using the same rhetoric over and over again in the hope of selling the idea of the misguided “Zelensky’s formula,” which has been worded as an ultimatum.

❗️ We do not accept such ultimatums, and we are not going to attend such “peace summits.”

• Americans make no secret of their mercenary aspirations, which the current and former secretaries of state confirmed the other day. Antony Blinken said openly that nearly all of the new military aid package for Ukraine would be invested in the US defence industry.

• There are numerous examples of Bern’s involvement in the aggressive policies pursued by the collective West, such as joining the EU anti-Russia sanctions and acting in solidarity with the Kiev regime.

• We have notified our Armenian partners of our views on this matter and openly stated them. Regarding security, I would like to emphasise that Armenia remains a CSTO member and is a party to numerous bilateral military and military-technical agreements.

• We always raise the issue of the EU mission in our contacts with Yerevan and other regional partners. We reaffirm our belief that sustainable peace in the South Caucasus can only be established through the comprehensive implementation of the package of trilateral agreements which the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia reached in 2020-2022.

• Russia and Belarus are working on a joint project to manufacture light aircraft, which are in high demand in view of an extensive network of region-to-region air routes being created to meet current market needs.

• Our Belarusian friends are contemplating considerable investment in this high-potential project, which is going to give them access to the transhipment of containers, mineral fertilisers and oil products using the Northern Sea Route.

• We are working together with our Belarusian friends on a comprehensive decision to abolish roaming across the Union State territory. At the preparatory stage, we agreed to develop a financial and economic model based on the averaged data on the use of mobile plans that do not exceed 300 minutes of outgoing calls and 20-25 GB of data traffic per month.

☝️ Such parameters are in line with the best international practice.
🎙 President of Russia Vladimir Putin on the main goals of Russia's BRICS 2024 Chairmanship:

💬 The main goal of Russia’s BRICS Chairmanship this year is to create the most favourable conditions for consistent development of all its members.

I am convinced that, by acting together in unity, we will be able to fulfill our countries’ potential in the economy, investment, technology, and human capital; to strengthen the positive impact of BRICS on global developments and make the world safer and more harmonious.

☝️ This year, the number of BRICS members has reached ten. Every state is unique and carries its centuries-old culture, customs and traditions, building its own model of socio-economic and political development.

Russia is taking every effort for new members to smoothly fit in the multi-faceted mechanisms of BRICS.

🇷🇺 Meet Russia’s new Arctic Bogatyr: What we know about the Evpaty Kolovrat icebreaker

The Evpaty Kolovrat icebreaker has completed state testing and is expected to join the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet in the near future.

🛳 The 82-meter long, 19-meter wide, 9.2-meter tall icebreaker displaces 4,080 tons, and can penetrate ice up to a meter thick. It has a cruising range of 7,600 nautical miles, a thirty-day endurance, and a speed up to 14 knots in clear waters.

🛳 The ship is driven by a powerful diesel-electric propulsion system with twin azimuth thrusters. Along with icebreaking, the vessel can provide towing support, deliver cargoes to remote areas, serve as a rescue ship for vessels in distress, conduct hydrographic surveys, and perform general patrols.

🛳 The Evpaty Kolovrat is a Project 21180M icebreaker class – a modernization and downsizing of the Project 21180 Ilya Muromets – a vessel commissioned into the Northern Fleet in 2017 to become the first new icebreaker tailored specifically for naval use to be delivered in nearly 50 years.

⚔️ The updated vessel is named after Evpaty Kolovrat, a 12th century Russian bogatyr heralded for his bravery, who legend has it died fighting a numerically superior Mongol army.

📆 On July 15, 1240 - 784 years ago - the forces of the Russian city-state of Novgorod under the command of Prince Alexander Nevsky triumphed over Swedish invaders who had invaded Novgorod's territory.

This event is known as the Battle of the Neva.

⚔️ In the 13th century, Sweden sought to expand its dominions and establish control over the territories surrounding the Gulf of Finland. The invaders aimed to establish a fortress and convert the locals to Catholicism, but they encountered fierce resistance from the Novgorodians and the young Prince, Alexander Yaroslavich.

⚔️ The Swedes landed on the banks of the Neva, near the confluence of the Izhora River, close to modern-day Saint Petersburg. Alexander Nevsky swiftly assembled his forces and marched to meet the enemy. The battle was brief but intense, culminating in a decisive victory for the Russian warriors.

🌟 The victory at the Battle of the Neva thwarted further Swedish advancement eastward and strengthened the position of Novgorod. Alexander Nevsky became a national hero and a symbol of the defense of Russian lands against foreign invaders.

#DidYouKnow:

At the time of the Battle of the Neva, Alexander Yaroslavich was only 19 years old. He distinguished himself as a seasoned commander and a skilled warrior, fighting shoulder to shoulder with his troops. It was for this victory that the young prince earned the epithet of Nevsky.

☦️ Canonised in 1547, the Grand Prince is considered the patron saint of Russian diplomacy and the military.
