Today, on the occasion of #DiplomatsDay, we bring another quote of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey #Lavrov on Russian diplomats: “In all times, true patriots have worked for our foreign policy who have fought for the common cause, including, if necessary, with weapons in their hands. The feat of our comrades, employees of the People's Commissariat for Foreign Affairs, who fought on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, serves as an enduring moral compass for all of us”

Ahead of the upcoming Russian Diplomat’s Day we would like to give you a new series dedicated to #TriviaFacts about Russian diplomacy.
🕯 On 5 February, diplomats mark the Day of Memory of Diplomatic Couriers who fell in the line of duty.
📅 #OTD in 1926, on the Moscow-Riga train, a terrorist attack occurred on Soviet diplomatic couriers Theodor Nette and Johann Machmastal, who were carrying mail to Berlin. Theodor Nette was mortally wounded in the head, and wounded Johann Makhmastal managed to fend off the attack and safeguard the package in his care. He delivered the post to Riga, handing it to a Soviet Embassy worker he knew personally, on the platform. Only after he had done that Johann Mahmastal allowed doctors to take him to a hospital.
🎖 Both heroes were awarded the Order of the Red Banner, and the steamship Tver was renamed in honor of Nette.
✍🏼Vladimir Mayakovsky, who personally knew Nette, dedicated one of his best known poems to him, “To Comrade Nette – the Steamship and the Man”.

#TriviaFacts about Russian diplomacy, ep.3 "The building of the Russian Foreign Ministry - one of the Moscow Seven Sisters"
✍️ The decree on the construction of the Stalin’s high-rises known as Seven Sisters was adopted just two years after the end of World War II.
On the day of Moscow’s 8️⃣0️⃣0️⃣th anniversary, the foundation stones of 7 skyscrapers were laid in different places at the same time (originally 9 were planned) including the Moscow State University, Hotel Ukraina, Kudrinskaya Square Building, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Leningradskaya Hotel, Red Gates Administrative Building and Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building.
🏗 Architects of the MFA building professor V.Gelfreikh and M.Minkus built the skyscraper (Smolenskaya-Sennaya Square, 32/34) between 1948-1953.
The central volume includes 27 floors and is 172 m tall. The building completes the panorama from the Borodinsky bridge, forming a square.
The interiors of the Ministry building are designed in the Stalinist or Socialist Classicism style - with the columns, stained glass windows and capitals with the walls are lined with light marble, the floors are carpeted with polished black granite.
It is interesting, but true! 👉 The building was originally designed without a spire. But when the construction was about to finish, Joseph Stalin ordered all Moscow skyscrapers to install spires with a star. The lightweight top of the building would not withstand the stone superstructure, so the 56-meter spire was decided to be mounted from steel plates. The construction coped with their weight, but the giant five-pointed star had to be abandoned.
So the Foreign Ministry building is the only one of the capital’s high-rises that is not crowned with this symbol.

#TriviaFacts about Russian 🇷🇺 diplomacy, ep.4, the first-ever legislative recognition of diplomatic immunity.
📆 In 1708, Russian diplomat Andrei Matveev in London was accosted and apprehended by some bailiffs, and moreover subjected to verbal and physical abuse. This case stirred up thrills in London-based diplomatic corps who considered it disrespect for the law of nations on the part of the British authorities.
☝️ English government hoped to settle the incident by offering Matveev a money gift, which he repudiated saying that affront had been inflicted on the Russian Tsar himself in the person of his diplomat.
✍️ The above mentioned case led the British Parliament to adopt the Act Preserving the Privileges of Ambassadors (April 21, 1709), the first-ever act to guarantee diplomatic immunity.

#InMemoriam
Ahead of the #DiplomatsDay (celebrated on February 10), we cherish the memory of Alexander Gorchakov, an outstanding Russian diplomat and statesman who served as the last Chancellor of the Russian Empire.
🗓 When he was appointed head of the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Empire in 1856, Gorchakov devoted his efforts to changing the conditions of the Treaty of Paris, which sealed the outcome of the Crimean War. His goal was to revoke the neutral status of the Black Sea and to regain control of Bessarabia.
✍️ On August 21, 1856, Gorchakov dispatched a directive outlining new foreign policy objectives to all Russian embassies. It contained a phrase that resonated throughout Europe: “Some say that Russia is angry. No, Russia is not angry, Russia is concentrating.” This phrase conveyed Russia’s decision to refrain from becoming actively involved in European affairs to restore order at home. Another element of the new policy was that Russia would no longer sacrifice its interests to please anyone.
Gorchakov’s diplomatic skills prevented Austria from joining the Franco-Prussian war, which ensured Prussia’s victory over France. This allowed Russia to stop implementing the Paris Treaty articles that limited its sovereignty in the Black Sea and to encourage other countries to recognise this new state of affairs at the international conference in London in 1871.
👉 Thanks to Gorchakov’s efforts, the international situation underwent a transformation, enabling Russia to launch reforms that resulted in a huge economic leap in the last 30 years of the XIX century.
Gorchakov’s principle of prioritising national interests in foreign policy remains relevant in Russian diplomacy. Alexander Gorchakov is respected as a bright example of competence, dedication and service to the Fatherland.
☝️ An outstanding statesman & a brilliant politician, Alexander Gorchakov believed that diplomacy must not divide nations but bring them closer together and promote their interaction based on common interests.

⚡️ Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s video greetings on Diplomatic Worker’s Day (Moscow, February 10, 2024)
Read in full
Key points
🔵 In keeping with our long-standing good tradition, we celebrate our professional holiday in February, which unites all those who defend Russia’s foreign policy track.
🔵 No matter where you work – in the central building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Smolenskaya Square, the territorial missions in the regions of the Russian Federation, or the Russian foreign missions – you uphold the true values of Russian diplomacy: loyalty to your Fatherland, patriotism, selflessness and a clear vision of Russia’s national interests.
🔵 Faced with the hybrid aggression launched by the collective West, Russia’s foreign policy service is making its contribution to the diplomatic support of the special military operation and the effort to achieve its goals.
❗️ Today, Russia stands at the vanguard of fast-moving change. By and large, we play a central role in defining this development vector and its content. This means that all of us without exception must keep up to speed at all times and adopt a forward-looking mindset in order to anticipate anything our ill-wishers may do, while being proactive and creative in adapting our enduring foreign policy principles to the changing environment. These principles include our commitment to independence, being results-driven, inclusiveness and a multi-faceted approach.
🔵 Russia is set to hold a presidential election soon. In fact, it is just a month away. This is a challenging moment in the history of our country when we must all fulfil our civic duty. I am certain that all our foreign missions will make the necessary arrangements to enable Russians to vote abroad. We are taking all the necessary steps to make this happen.
🔵 I wish you every success and good luck. Happy Diplomatic Worker’s Day.

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks at a gala meeting devoted to Diplomatic Worker’s Day (Moscow, February 9, 2024)
Key talking points:
🔵 This is not the first time that our country is at the peak of geopolitical processes. This is why Russia’s place in the emerging multipolar world and the future of the world itself largely depends on us, on our dedication and a correct understanding of the priorities.
🔵 The US-led collective West is not letting up in its attempts to impose an unfair unipolar global arrangement on the world.
🔵 Acting together with the countries of the global majority, our associates in the international arena, we will continue working for the unconditional guarantees for our lawful interests in regional security based on the principle of an indivisible Russia.
🔵 The hybrid war unleashed by the West against those who object to its global striving to maintain its domination is creating not only obstacles but also impetuses for strengthening versatile ties.
🔵 We intend to continue consolidating our strategic partnerships with the PRC, India, Brazil, South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Syria, Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and a vast number of other countries that share our conceptual approaches to the world situation and the prospects for the development of our common planet.
🔵 We attach primary importance to reaching the goals of Russia’s current presidency in the #CIS and the expanded #BRICS.
🔵 We focus in particular on advancing BRICS’ relations with regional and sub-regional association from the Global South
🔵 We will continue to work within the #G20, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum, the East Asia Summit mechanisms, and other multilateral associations that include the participation of Western representatives.
🔵 We will do our best to help further strengthen the #SCO in the interests of effectively addressing pressing international issues and promoting our concept for strengthening Eurasian security across the board.

📄 President Vladimir Putin congratulated current staff and veterans of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Diplomatic Worker’s Day.
💬 Vladimir Putin: The Russian Foreign Ministry rightfully takes pride in its rich history and glorious traditions. Throughout history, its employees have honourably protected the interests of the Motherland in the international arena despite any difficulties and challenges.
In the current geopolitical landscape, amidst a hybrid war unleashed against us and attempts by the collective West to isolate Russia and undermine its security, the Foreign Ministry faces difficult and responsible tasks.
Russian diplomacy aims to make a significant contribution to creating favourable external conditions for our country’s dynamic development, fostering effective cooperation with foreign partners, and promoting a positive agenda in international relations. It also seeks to strengthen the unity of the global majority – of countries in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America – in order to build a just multipolar world order based on true equality, mutual respect, and universally recognised norms of international law.
❗️ Efforts to enhance cooperation with #CIS countries, expand the integration process within the #EAEU, and strengthen ties within the #CSTO and the Union State remain a top priority. Special attention should be given to the proper implementation of tasks and responsibilities during Russia’s chairmanship of the CIS and of the expanded #BRICS association.
Undoubtedly, there is significant need for efforts aimed at uniting the multinational and multi-religious Russian community through supporting our compatriots abroad, promoting the Russian language and showcasing national cultural and scientific achievements, as well as countering attempts to falsify history and revise the outcomes of World War II.
I am confident that staff members at the Ministry’s head office and foreign missions will continue to work with utmost dedication, creativity, and initiative.
