🕯On June 22, Russia marks the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow

▪️The Great Patriotic War, which began 82 years ago, is a tragic page in our history that devastated the lives of tens of millions of people in our country.

▪️In the early hours of June 22, 1941, Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union without declaring war.

▪️The bloodiest war in human history went on for 1,418 days and ended on May 9, 1945, with the victory of the Soviet Union and its allies and a total defeat of the Axis countries.

▪️The Soviet Union’s losses amounted to 26.6 million, or 40 percent of overall human casualties in WWII. Out of them, over 8.7 million perished on the battlefront, 7.42 million were exterminated in the Nazi-occupied territories, over 4.1 million died of the inhuman conditions created by the occupation forces. As many as 5.27 million people were moved as forced labourers to Germany.

🕯Today, state flags are lowered around the country, and a minute of silence will be observed at 12:15 Moscow time. We remember.
🏆 The Friendship Games, the BRICS Games, and the Games of the Future tournament will be held in Russia

🗓 The heroic defence of the Brest Fortress began on June 22, 1941.

⚔️ Brest was among the first Soviet cities to bear the brunt of Germany’s surprise attack when the Great Patriotic War began. The Brest garrison numbered 7,000 to 8,000 soldiers representing more than 30 nationalities.

Under Operation Barbarossa, Nazi forces were planning to seize the fortress in a few hours. However, the enemy was bogged down in Brest for a week. Soviet soldiers resisted for another month, and gunfire from the fortress could be heard until early August 1941.

🕯 The Brest Fortress came to symbolise the courage, heroic fortitude and valour of Soviet soldiers. When Brest was liberated on July 28, 1944, Red Army soldiers found an inscription by one of its last defenders: “I am dying but not giving up! Farewell, Motherland!”

🎖 The defence of the Brest Fortress became one of the most important episodes in the history of the Great Patriotic War. It remains a monument to the indomitable willpower of those who became the first to stand up to the Nazi German invaders.
