🎉 #OTD, 44 years ago, on July 19, the 1980 Summer Olympic Games kicked off in Moscow, bringing together athletes from 80 countries in a spirit of friendship and sportsmanship.

🥇 Despite the geopolitical realities of that time and the boycott of the Olympics by separate states, the competitions in Moscow became a symbol of sporting triumph and peaceful coexistence.

🇮🇳 During the Games, athletes from India won gold medals in the field hockey.

🧸 These Games are remembered not only for their achievements in sports, but also for the symbols that were an integral part of them. The most vivid of them is Misha, aka the Olympic Mishka (Bear), which became the mascot of the Olympics in Moscow.

On the Issue of Struggling Against Neocolonial Practices

✍🏻 Article by Russia's Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov in the Schiller Institute weekly magazine

READ IN FULL

💬 Russia stands for the formation of a fairer and more stable multipolar system of international relations, based on the UN Charter and, above all, on the principle of sovereign equality of states.

This approach is gaining increasing support within the international community that seeks to eradicate vestiges of the colonial system.

👉 Further key points:

Meanwhile, the "collective West" is still actively resisting such efforts, trying hard to retain the “reins of power” and the status of “master of destinies.” The current dynamic in Ukraine, and restless attempts by Western capitals to destabilize the situation in the post-Soviet space, are illustrative examples of the “global hegemon’s” desperate struggle to preserve its dominance and an opportunity to impose the unipolar model on the international community.

☝️ The world majority clearly understands that the Western colonial practices don’t lead to anything good.

Of special note is the unlawful practice of the West, aimed at unleashing sanctions pressure on the states that refuse to submit to the dictates and sacrifice their sovereignty and national identity.

Western capitals actively resort to the mechanisms of “debt neocolonialism.” Under the disguise of environmental protection and fight against climate change, they hypocritically promote the concepts of “green imperialism” which only benefit the so-called “golden billion.”

Another symptom of neocolonialism is the aggressive imposition of neoliberal attitudes to the detriment of traditional spiritual and moral values.

❗️ It is high time for the Western camp, representing the minority, to understand the futility of imposing neocolonial practices (including the so-called “rules-based order”), and any attempts to lay the blame on someone else.

2️⃣5️⃣0️⃣ years ago, on July 21, 1774, the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca was signed, marking one of Russia's most significant diplomatic successes in the 18th century.

The document put an end to the six-year Russo-Turkish War (1768–1774) and cemented significant territorial and political gains for Russia as well as ensuring the safety of its southern regions and pacification of the Crimean Khanate, who for centuries raided Russia and engaged in slavery trade. The Treaty laid ground for the future accession of Crimea to the Russian Empire in 1783.

📃 Peace negotiations began in 1772, but it took two years to reach final agreements. The terms of the treaty were extremely favorable for Russia and included the following key provisions:

Crimea was declared independent from the Ottoman Empire.

• Russia acquired a vast part of the Black Sea coast, including the fortresses of Kerch, Yenikale, Kinburn, and Azov.

• Russian merchant ships were granted free passage through the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits.

• Moldova and Wallachia received autonomy and came under Russian protection.

• Russia obtained the right to protect Christian subjects of the Ottoman Empire.

☝️ The Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca of 1774 was a turning point in the shared history of Russia and Crimea. It effectively stopped the devastation of Russia's southern regions and put an end to the abhorrent slave trade in the Black Sea, confirmed Russia's status as a great power and opened new opportunities for economic development.
