The #WHA77 rush has started.

This morning, I had my first meeting with Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen to discuss 🇧🇩's investment in local vaccine production, primary health care and prevention of noncommunicable diseases.

I was also pleased to meet with Health Ministers of:
- 🇰🇪, Nakhumicha Wafula, to discuss progress on universal health coverage, primary health care & health workforce training;
- 🇩🇿, Abdelhak Saihi, to discuss immunization needs, esp. to protect migrants & refugees;
- the Commonwealth, with whom our shared priority is to strengthen health systems, the health workforce and emergency preparedness in SIDS.

We also had activities related to humanitarian crises in the Eastern Mediterranean region:
- signing an agreement for a contribution of $19.4 million in support of  our operations in Yemen, Sudan & Syria;
- an event with all Health Ministers from the region. I reiterated the need for our strong joint advocacy for respecting dignity & fundamental rights to health, & above all, peace.
Massive thank you to the thousands of people who walked the talk for #HealthForAll this morning with us — the Ministers, #WHA77 delegates, Ambassadors, sport and health champions, Geneva citizens.

Thank you for your support and positive energy!
Proud and honoured to present my sister Prime Minister Mia Mottley with one of my annual awards for global health.

The Prime Minister has been a powerful voice for:
- Health equity;
- Debt sustainability;
- Development finance;
- Local production of medical products;
- Climate action, especially for Small Island Developing States;
- A holistic approach to non-communicable diseases and mental health, including through the Bridgetown Declaration.

Since 2020, she has been the Chair and a driving force of the Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance.

She demonstrates exemplary leadership in fighting for a healthier, safer, and fairer world for all.

We live in a difficult time of multiple overlapping challenges:
-conflict
-climate change
-displacement
-poverty
-inequality
-polarization
-disease outbreaks
-the increasing burden of noncommunicable diseases and mental health conditions.

The WHO Investment Round aims to mobilize 7 billion dollars over four years to support countries to respond to these challenges. #WHA77

The past year has been tumultuous.

But we refused to give up.

Faced with multiple crises, we still see a future of health and peace.

A future reached through a stronger, better funded WHO.

All for health, #HealthForAll.

Merci beaucoup, Mauritania President and African Union Chairperson Cheikh Ghazouani, for joining us at the #WHA77 opening, and for your commitment to health.

I applaud your determination to achieve universal health coverage through establishing the National Insurance Solidarity Health Fund to provide cover for vulnerable people throughout the country.

We welcome your commitment to co-host the first WHO Investment Round and we look forward to strengthening our partnership with the African Union during your tenure.
2023 was a year of many challenges, but also of many achievements.

Some of it makes the headlines; most of it doesn’t.

Some of it attracts the attention of donors; and some of it doesn’t.

But my colleagues and I remain committed to serving the world as best we can, as we work together for a healthier, safer, fairer world. #WHA77

As I have said many times, investments in health and in universal health coverage should not be seen as a cost, but as an investment in healthy, productive and resilient societies.

Fundamentally, #HealthForAll is a political choice. #WHA77

While AI is a tool with enormous potential, what matters is how we use it. This is why we had a roundtable discussion with the #WHA77 delegates.

WHO is committed to supporting all Member States to harness the power of AI, and manage its risks, as we work together to promote, provide and protect the health of the world’s people.
I was honoured to present WHO award for Global Health life time achievement to Professor Katalin Kariko and Professor Drew Weissman for their ground-breaking scientific work that led to the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 – research that led to them being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2023.

Professor Weissman was not able to join us, so Professor Karikó accepted the award on behalf of both of them.

The vaccines that Professor Weissman and Professor Karikó developed have saved millions of lives and prevented millions of cases of severe COVID-19.

Their leadership in this field has the potential to play a critical role in major health breakthroughs in the future.

Without their resilience and their relentless drive to advancing the science in this field, the impact of the pandemic would have been much worse.

Professor Karikó and Professor Weissman, you have our thanks, our admiration, and our gratitude. #WHA77
